Samsung 850 EVO SSD: observations & LL-booting problems in dual-boot setup...
Posted by: m654321 - 08-25-2016, 05:31 AM - Forum: Hard Drives and SSDs - Replies (4)

On setups (1) & (3) in my signature below,  I replaced the HDD drives for Samsung 850 EVO SSDs some time ago.
On setup (2) I have a Crucial BX100 SSD, and have used this for comparison.

Observation - Samsung SSDs seem to overheat:
The first thing I noticed, following HDD replacement with the Samsung SSDs (250GB & 1TB), is that these SSDs run very hot, to the extent that it feels uncomfortable working with a laptop on my lap.  In contrast, the Crucial SSD gives out hardly any heat at all, the laptop chassis feeling very cool, and there are no LL booting issues [though setup (2) is an LL-only laptop].  This 'overheating' effect, in both setups (1) and (3), with the Samsung SSDs, struck me as being very odd.

LL hanging at bootup with Win8.1/LL2.8 (either with or without UEFI installed)
Second, I had a regular issue with LL hanging indefinitely at boot up in setup (1) using a Samsung SSD, though rectified this each time the problem arose, using the unsatisfactory workaround described in Section F of https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/tutor...y-enabled/

Originally, I had a Win8.1/LL2 with UEFI on setup (1), and at first I thought the 'hanging issue' might be due to some sort of UEFI bug.  To check this, I reinstalled the dual-boot setup, but this time without UEFI, i.e. installed on an MBR rather than a GPT formatted SSD.  However, the LL- hanging problem still persisted. Indeed, the problem only appeared to go away when I went back to using an HDD disk.  Setup (3) has never displayed any booting issues and works reliably.

Obviously, I want to return to using the Samsung SSDs in setup (1), given  their significant edge over HDDs in speed of operation together with their high cost I've invested in them...

Any advice or comments on either of the above warmly welcomed.
Many thanks in advance for any help.

Regards
Mike

  Lubuntu Software Center
Posted by: Bob2355 - 08-25-2016, 04:10 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (4)

I seem to be having trouble this evening with "Lubuntu Software Center".  I noticed  that after searching for and locating an application then clicking on the "Information" tab the "LSC" seems to hang up. Giving up on the "Information" request I attempt to exit the application and receive the following message, "The window might be busy....." "Do you want to terminate the application?"

I failed to locate any thread that deals with this issue.  Any ideas and or fixes would be appreciated.  Heading to bed now and will deal with it tomorrow.

Posted by: tommykry - 08-24-2016, 03:48 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (13)

Hi All,
Loving the new Linux Lite 3.0 have been using it as my main OS since its release and think its awesome!
My sister has an older Laptop (Acer Aspire 9300-5349)that came w Vista 32bit and 4 gig of ram, 160gig Hard drive
this one
http://static.highspeedbackbone.net/pdf/...aSheet.pdf
Anyway i picked it up from her on vaca and have 2 weeks to try and get linux lite running on it. i would love to get 3.0 on it but cant seem to get it installed, im using Linux Lite 3.0 32bit on dvd
I can get it to boot and work in live mode fine, but when i go to install it, it freezes at end of installation and i have to power off the computer as it locks up completely, ive tried it a few times and does the same thing.
Like i said it works fine in live mode.
I had a dvd laying around of LL 2.6 and it installed it and it works fine but would really love to use the new version 3.0
So if anyone has any suggestions i would appreciate it.
Thanks
Tommy Smile

Posted by: premier69 - 08-22-2016, 05:31 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (3)

hello

I like the window managment of windows and am hoping there's a way to go about the same with Linux Lite.
Namely;

I MS Windows when i drag a window around i can 'slam' it against the top to maximize it and I can use the window + arrow keys to move a window around and is there a way to do this in linux?

Will this work well with Linux Lite? (New Computer Build)
Posted by: TuxInAGalaxy - 08-21-2016, 11:58 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (8)

I see in the hardware category everything is broken down in separate parts.  I just want your opinion about a computer I'm thinking about building.  This might not be in the hardware archive since I'm putting it together myself.  Will this work well with Linux Lite?

  Info needed about changing icon
Posted by: Braca - 08-20-2016, 11:23 PM - Forum: Other - No Replies

installed Minecraft and got it running just fine. Was able to place the .jar file on the desktop, make it executable, and it opens the game just fine on double-click. I would like to know is there any way that I can change the icon for minecraft.jar and put some other pic instead eg. a small jpeg or png downloaded from the net? LinuxLite 3.0. Thanks in advance
