How to Sync your Apple iDevice with iTunes using Oracle VirtualBox
Posted by: Teddy - 02-07-2015, 01:54 AM - Forum: Tutorials - Replies (1)

Note: This tutorial assumes that you already have a Microsoft Windows installation (XP or Above) fully functioning in Oracle VirtualBox. If you need a tutorial on how to setup a Microsoft Windows virtual machine, view the video listed in the Software Requirements section.

In this tutorial, we are going to setup and install iTunes within Windows to sync your Apple iDevice with Linux. This is useful if you have trouble getting your iDevice working with GTKPod within Linux.

The example device I will use to do this tutorial is a 7th Generation (Green) iPod Nano [2012 Version].

Software Requirements

Microsoft Windows Virtual Machine - If you do not have Windows setup in Oracle VirtualBox, view this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DhwS4eZExU.

Oracle VirtualBox - Download and Install from http://www.virtualbox.org. Click on "Downloads" on the left side column, click on "Oracle VirtualBox for Linux Hosts" and choose the latest "Ubuntu" .DEB file option, in either 32-Bit (i386) or 64-Bit (AMD64).

Apple iTunes - This is the "official" software used to sync your Apple iDevice. You can download it directly from Apple here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.

(Optional) Oracle VirtualBox Extension Pack - Download and install from https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads. This extension adds USB 2.0 support for faster transfer speeds, and better 3D acceleration support for graphics.

1. Start your Microsoft Windows Virtual Machine.

2. Open a Web Browser to Download Apple iTunes.

3. Install Apple iTunes.

4. Connect Apple iDevice, if not already done.

5. Select your Apple iDevice from the USB menu in Oracle VirtualBox.

6. Sync with iTunes!

  Speaker Noises
Posted by: pamdo - 02-06-2015, 05:52 PM - Forum: Sound - Replies (4)

Hi I installed Linux lite 2.2 for my friend on her old Sony Vaio VGN-FS415E. Everything is great except for 2 things:
the most annoying is a horrible intermittent very loud crackling from the speakers. I have Linux lite installed in dual boot with Windows XP and there is no noise in XP. How can I get rid of the noise?

Secondly, she wants to manage her new iPod with Linux lite. I have installed gtkpod but what should I use to import CDs? If I copy them, the wav files are too big and Banshee doesn't seem to be supported in Linux lite. Clementine has no option to import CDs that I can see.

Many thanks

Greetings from Sofia City, Bulgaria, Eastern Europe!!
Posted by: avramoff - 02-06-2015, 01:57 PM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (7)

After giving about a month from my immense (literally) time, to get an idea what is all that Linux fashion spreading all around (we must admire Canonical for investing in Linux advertising), I have started with LinuxMint-Rebecca, then I`ve tried Ubuntu 14.04, then Peppermint (ohhh my...), ElementaryOS, and then back to Ubutntu, but this time 14.10.

My name is Miro Avramoff, I write for the first time in a linux community forum, and I have decided to do so, because I found LinuxLite - as a whole conception - to be a wonderful project, which is worth my attention and energy to explore fully, and as I could, to report for problems and generate IDEAS, which is my Bless from God. Thanks for admiration!

Beccause I live in Bulgaria, Eastern Europe - so very close to Russia, my first concerns about my already chosen primary OS - LinuxLite 2.2. - are about SECURITY. Staff like firewall, full encryption of the whole hard drive, which I couldn`t do through installation process, AND what options do we have with OpenVPN or other services like that, because at the time, we could only install ZenMate.com extension to our Mozilla or Chrome (ium), which encrypts and hides the traffic only of the browser, but not of the whole system though...

I think in today`s Cold War reality, when legions of Russian and Chines hackers groups are roughing around the NATO countries to "steal or destroy" - that`s their motto - we should pay more attention on our security.

Please excuse me for the long presentation. I hope I could be worthy for the ongoing development of LinuxLite, because I already have chose it.

Thanks,
Miro Avramoff

  Trouble loading Xwindows during boot
Posted by: sameck - 02-06-2015, 12:48 AM - Forum: Start up and Shutdown - Replies (5)

I'm having trouble loading Xwindows during boot.  This became a problem a couple of days ago after I ran the "Install Updates".  It downloaded about 180 MB worth of files as part of the updates.  I reloaded Firefox after the updates installations completed and Firefox duly mentioned that updates would be installed upon restarting.  This worked without issue.  I did not attempt a reboot until the next day and, unfortunately, it has been problematic ever since.  This problem has also occurred after the system has been idle where the screen locker has locked the user account and the monitor has gone to sleep.  The only recourse is to power off the PC.

Generally, it fails to finish loading the Xwindows interface login screen after the OS appears to be loading drivers (using <ESC> at the boot [feather] splash screen).  The mouse cursor appears but the screen stays black behind it.  I attempt the login as if the login screen had appeared but this does nothing.  It doesn't happen every time though.  I am writing this from the booted installed OS but it took 4 attempts to boot before it succeeded.  Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot the problem?  Am I better off simply re-installing the OS?  Is there anything you would wish to learn here.  I am willing to be of service if you would like to investigate this but I don't know whether it would be useful to you or not.

The lunatic looking to the future during the full moon
Posted by: ukbrian - 02-05-2015, 09:02 PM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (13)

Ikey Docherty the original developer of Mint LMDE made a comment on the LMDE forums when LMDE first appeared

Quote:We might have to write a new shell, it can't be that difficult
That got my attention but he disappeared from the forum shortly afterwards as he never intended to use update packs but Clem insisted.

He made a post on the forum about 12 months later announcing the launch of a beta for his new  Debian stable based distro SolusOS which had updated kernels and updated apps but on the stable base.

That ran for 12 months and then he brought out an some alphas for Debian Wheezy but then decided to start again but using the PiSi package manager developed by a Turkish university, he's not afraid to start again instead of ploughing on.

He brought out a few dev editions but then suddenly he closed down SolusOS which was a huge disappointment, what was worst for me personally was that shortly afterwards my plan B  Anthony Nordquist a network manager closed down SalineOS and moved to Manjaro. [Image: nxcKGx0.gif] I'm up the creek without a paddle.

I tried a few rolling releases but that's not the way to go so I started looking at Ubyntu LTS editions and that's why I'm here.

Anyway 12 months or so later Ikey launches an alpha of EvolveOS using a new Linux base and a fork of the PiSi package manager and a new desktop environment he calls Budgie. I lurk his google+ page and the quality of the devs and designers there are well quality, I even saw Mark shuttleworth make a post there about compiling the base kernel or something.

Two weeks ago he launched a beta, it's still not ready for the likes of me but this link just got posted http://www.techrepublic.com/article/why-...om-ubuntu/

So if I might be right maybe we should be looking to produce an Xfce version or some derivitive.

EvolveOS at https://evolve-os.com/about/

Another one who post and collaborates with Ikey is Michael Spencer @ http://papyros.io/

I'm jiggered after all this effort, I need to chill, If I get a knock on the door I'll be very

[SOLVED] Lunatic is having problems booting after installing
Posted by: ukbrian - 02-05-2015, 07:33 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (14)

This is happening to me on two machines both AMD, ATI boxes.

With 32 bit
Standard install nothing strange and I've tried with putting the grub in the root and into the MBR but when I boot all I get in the grub menu is

Code:
Description: (on /dev/sdc6)
/boot/initrd.img-3.13.0-24-generic (on /dev/sdc6)
Description: (on /dev/sdc6)
/boot/initrd.img-3.13.0-24-generic (on /dev/sdc6)
Description: (on /dev/sdc6)
/boot/initrd.img-3.13.0-24-generic (on /dev/sdc6)
The duplicate lines are a grub2 bug but it don't boot off either option.

The 64 bit version boots OK  but I prefer using 32 bit.

There's no rush but there's a reward on offer

I've tried multiple DVD's, checked the md5 and tried on different HDD's

Hi Folks,

I'm Bruno and I live in the UK. I've been using LL2 for about 3 weeks now and I think it is the business!  Wink

I've been distro-hopping for a few months after using this lappie with Win8 and, being unable to upgrade to Win8.1 (I tried, believe me I tried  :-\ ) I moved over to linux.

I've settled on LL2 because, well, I like it. Wink

Bruno
