A few decades ago, I did work on a Unix box, the PR1ME. But that was long ago, and far away.
I did love that box, it was my first exposure to a real multi-user/multi-tasking operating systems, my first exposure to the real world. And I was good.
But the first real job offer came in from an S/36 shop, because I knew COBOL. For those unfamiliar with IBM mid-ranges, RPG is the language of choice, for no good reason I can think of. This made me an expert in COBOL on IBM midrange machines (the only expert for about a decade), and I have been IBM midrange ever since.
I have more or less kept up my DOS and Windows skills, but I cannot be a Windows programmer. Being a programmer is hard enough without having to worry about if a program fault: - is a bug in your program
- a misplaced DLL
- a contradictory program running somewhere
- a need for a reboot
Due to customer demand, my company is moving towards Windows , and every instinct I had, said. "RUN!", so I did.
I do understand the concepts of OOP, but in the Windows environment, it seems a programmers nightmare.
That is my story
Pete

| [SOLVED] WPS writer extra symbol fonts: how to install |

As you'll see from my intro post I'm a total beginner. I downloaded wps office and it is working fine except the writer won't allow me to insert bullets. I googled and found I needed an extra symbol font set. I found that set from a google too (links on wps site are dead). So, I've unzipped the fonts which are .ttf files and they are sitting in my downloads folder.
What to do now? My googling suggests 2 ways:
1. Install font manager which I did but I've no idea what to do from here. Fiddling around produced nothing and I don't want to bust anything.
2. Install to usr/share/fonts but this too is beyond me.
Anyone fancy walking me through it? If I get this working I can finally abandon MS both at work and home and do absolutely everything on LL.
TIA

Absolute Linux beginner. Using LL on a Dell D610 Pentium 1.73 with 1GB RAM. Just installed it fresh this week. Installed easily. Recognised wifi immediately. Net is zippy. Plays 1080p youtube w/o problem. This and WP is all I use it for. I'm moving over from XP and can't wait to finally get MS off my back.
I've no idea what I'm doing iro the terminal. I installed Kingsoft's wps office w/o problem (cut and paste instructions from the web into terminal!) though. Installed fine bar a problem with the extra font symbols for wps writer but that seems to be a wps issue. Found the fonts on the net and dloaded them but not a clue how to install them. I'll post separately about that.
I haven't tried to set up my printer yet.

I am using Linux Lite 2.2 on my desktop and decided to load it on my laptop. During the installation I have to select the keyboard type but the keyboard is not recognized so I cannot continue. The laptop was purchased with Windows XP installed and the keyboard worked fine. I then installed windows 7 and again it was fine. The laptop is an LG LW25 (LGW2) Pro Express Dual. Any ideas as to why the keyboard is not being recognized and what can I do to solve the problem?

Hi I installed Linux lite 2.2 for my friend on her old Sony Vaio VGN-FS415E. Everything is great except for 2 things:
the most annoying is a horrible intermittent very loud crackling from the speakers. I have Linux lite installed in dual boot with Windows XP and there is no noise in XP. How can I get rid of the noise?
Secondly, she wants to manage her new iPod with Linux lite. I have installed gtkpod but what should I use to import CDs? If I copy them, the wav files are too big and Banshee doesn't seem to be supported in Linux lite. Clementine has no option to import CDs that I can see.
Many thanks
