Why Is My Computer Slowing Down? - DLX - 03-11-2015
This in right place if no please move.
Hi all
Computer slowing down I looked I'm not running out of disk pace if there is swap files. I would know what to do if I was using a Windows box. I read there is no defrag in Linux or Lite. I also look at youtube but most videos are on about video loading or running slow.
I have very limited knowledge on Linux seems a big mountain to chip away at and yes as said before the terminal screars me Text then clicky interface.
yes a post about sysstat I loaded software and let it run as I used computer I don't know what these stars mean.
Would it be easy just to reload Lite?

Re: Computer slowing down. I read there no defrag - AustinTexas - 03-11-2015
What process do you believe is slowing down? Loading programs?
Re: Computer slowing down. I read there no defrag - DLX - 03-11-2015
Hay
No network slow.
Computer making alot noise sounds like it going to tack off. hard drive spinning
Web pages loading & downloading at times slow
Programs opening at times
load Google maps to Satlight moad
All round seems a bit sluggish
Re: Computer slowing down. I read there no defrag - avj - 03-11-2015
Excessive noise and drive light staying on can be an indication of an impending hard drive failure. If at all possible you should backup anything that you don't want to lose.
Re: Computer slowing down. I read there no defrag - avj - 03-11-2015
I would suggest installing gnome-disk-utility so you can check the "smart" status of the drive to see if it is failing. The program pulls in a few dependencies but nothing major. After it is installed you go to main>settings>disks when you open the program you should see a list of drives on the left. Hit Ctrl+S to open the smart status screen for the selected drive, and to see the general health of the disk. Hover the mouse over each line in the window to see what that information means. If it shows a "read error rate" value of anything other than "0", you need to take steps to save your data, and start planning to replace the drive.

Hi,
Follow avj's recommendation to see if your disk is "SMART"
A few additional things:
To check for bad disk blocks:
Code: sudo badblocks -v /dev/sdx
where x is your disk(s) , like:
Code: dave@asus-mini-1:~$ sudo badblocks -v /dev/sda
[sudo] password for dave:
Checking blocks 0 to 125034839
Checking for bad blocks (read-only test): done
Pass completed, 0 bad blocks found. (0/0/0 errors)
Can take some time depending size/type of disk
To check basic disk access/speed:
Code: sudo hdparm -t --direct /dev/sdx
where x is your disk(s) , like:
Code: dave@asus-mini-1:~$ sudo hdparm -t --direct /dev/sda
/dev/sda:
Timing O_DIRECT disk reads: 1530 MB in 3.00 seconds = 509.42 MB/sec
dave@asus-mini-1:~$ sudo hdparm -t --direct /dev/sdb
/dev/sdb:
Timing O_DIRECT disk reads: 332 MB in 3.02 seconds = 110.01 MB/sec
Regarding defrag, this is hotly debated, but Linux "does" fragment,
BUT, the impact on day to day typical users is very minimal.
In high end servers/transactional systems, yes it is very important.
If you want to defrag..??
Code: sudo e4defrag -v /<location>
where <location> is your disk partition(s) , like:
or
Code: sudo e4defrag -v /home
Finally,
Menu > System > Resource Usage
Is there anything showing that seems to be "hogging" CPU/Memory.?
Re: Computer slowing down. I read there no defrag - DLX - 03-12-2015
wow many thanks for all detailed help.
I got plenty to try.
-----------
Right I loaded install gnome-disk-utility

![[Image: JBBcXmhd]](https://db.tt/JBBcXmhd)
then did sudo badblocks -v /dev/sdx
Checking blocks 0 to 78150743
Checking for bad blocks (read-only test): done
Pass completed, 0 bad blocks found. (0/0/0 errors)
Did get any there then sudo hdparm -t --direct /dev/sdx as don't know unc of drive i.e C:/
Thanks alot

Htop and hard drive tests look OK to me. It says 30 bad sectors but disk is OK. Is it only online stuff that you are doing that seems slow? If so. Your ISP server or home connection may be
slowing things down which is outside of your control. Other than calling your internet service provider.
I have called and had my ISP provider. Windstream. Change the wire from my pole to the house because of problems.
My service became a little better after that.
Is any other computers in your house slowing down? Is your computer a dual booter and is Windows slow also?
Have you ran a memtest yet?
![[Image: pass1.png]](https://www.linuxliteos.com/manual/img/installer/pass1.png)
memtest should be ran for a few hours at the least for a good ram check.

Hi,
Nothing screams out issues,
Firefox is a bit of a CPU/Memory Hog if you look at the individual items,
and add them up.
From your first post your disks appear to be sda , sdb & sdc
Have you done a speed test recently..??
I use: http://www.speedtest.net/
It's reasonably consistent, and close the BT Wholesale Tester
Unless you are with one of the Fibre Provider like Virgin..

Here is more info on HDD expected lifetime.
http://www.extremetech.com/computing/170748-how-long-do-hard-drives-actually-live-for
In my opinion it appears that the HDD is failing. There are many read errors, over 232 million according to the screen shot. That along with the seek error rate 369 million and uncorrectable errors in 1416 sectors. More about seek errors here:

More info on Uncorrectable sector count:
