Enabling USB ports in Oracle Virtualbox versions 4 & 5
Posted by: m654321 - 07-25-2015, 11:13 AM - Forum: Tutorials - Replies (2)

[size=1em]Whenever I've set-up Oracle Virtualbox to test guest operating systems, there seems to be a problem with enabling the computer's USB 2.0 (in VBox version 4) or  USB  3.0 ports (version 5), so that the attached devices communicate with the guest OS.  I found a neat remedy at http://askubuntu.com/questions/25596/how...virtualbox  that I'd like to share, which worked for me...

Essentially you need to be in a vboxusers group. Open the terminal and type in the following:
[/size]

Code:
sudo usermod -a -G vboxusers <username>
[size=1em]

(I think -a -G can alternatively be typed as -aG though I haven't tried this)[/size][size=1em]
You need to reboot or logout/login for group membership to take effect.

When you have shutdown your virtual OS, go to Settings, within Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager, then down to USB, select this, and then click on the blue icon of a USB plug with a green cross on it on the right hand side of this window. Attach various USB devices and click the green cross each time, so that the devices appear in a list under USB Device Filters (with a tick next to each one). Don't forget to click 'OK button' at the bottom-right so that the changes take effect.

startup.nsh & UEFI in Oracle Virtualbox v.5 - What do I do next...?
Posted by: m654321 - 07-25-2015, 07:38 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (9)

I have downloaded version 5 of Oracle Virtualbox as it has USB 3.0 support; useful as my new laptop doesn't have USB 2.0.
I installed win 8.1 in Virtualbox - guest additions installed successfully.

I then noticed that Virtualbox version 5 has UEFI support, so thought I'd create another win 8.1 virtual machine, though this time with EFI enabled, to see if there was any advantage conferred with UEFI.  At the beginning of the installation, using anwin8.1 installation CD, I was then presented with the screen below in Virtualbox, but don't know what to do next... any ideas?

Also, how is Secure Boot enabled in Virtualbox? Is it possible? Does it confer any advantages over the default 'standard boot' in Virtualbox?

Many thanks for any help with this.
Regards
Mike

  Active PDFs without Adobe Reader
Posted by: torreydale - 07-25-2015, 02:27 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (9)

Does anyone have a way to handle active pdfs?  I have a user who has a utility bill that they can view in Firefox.  But the bill comes as an active pdf.  The user can enter in payment amount, date, checking account and routing number, etc., and they can pay the bill that way.  But it isn't working under Linux.  Based on the following article, it doesn't look like it will, but I thought I'd ask.

  Media Center
Posted by: austin.payne - 07-24-2015, 04:40 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (9)

I am building a media center pc for a church I go to. I plan on using Linux lite because of price, usability, stability, and security. The idea I have is to install vlc, and google chrome on top of Linux Lite, and use HDMI to connect it to a tv. Then us a wireless mouse and keyboard so that it can be controlled from some distance away. I will be using vlc to play disks or any other files on the local computer, and google chrome to stream off of youtube, netflix, etc. Would this set up work? If not, what other software should I use?
