I have my own OpenVPN Access Server.  In order to get Linux Lite to work with it fully, I was told this by the folks at OpenVPN:

Interestingly I see that 127.0.1.1 is being used as your DNS server. That is a local loopback IP, meaning your own computer is functioning as the DNS server. However it is doing that, it is probably running a local DNS server and when it doesn't have an answer for a query it will try to query some external DNS server. And that one appears not to be reachable.

Next try this;
sudo nano /etc/resolv.conf

Change the line that states
nameserver 127.0.1.1

To:
nameserver 8.8.8.8

And save and exit. Now ping www.google.com. Does it work now?

It did work.  I also had to add 8.8.8.8 as seen below.



My question is this, is what the folks at OpenVPN saying true?  If so, why does Linux Lite appear to be functioning as the DNS server using the 127.0.0.1 address? 

I keep getting this error as I boot up a Windows 7 VM.  So I deleted the VM and started a new one from scratch, and I get the same thing. 

I removed Virtualbox.  Rebooted.  Installed Updates and the reinstalled Virtualbox.  I removed and reinstalled using Lite Software, by the way.  My results were the same as mentioned in the above paragraph.  Any help would be appreciated.

I have a desktop icon/launcher that I've created.  It runs the way I need it to, but I have to right click and choose Open as Administrator.  I prefer a clean desktop, so I'd like to move this icon to the panel instead.

I have done that, but now I don't know how to choose "Open as Administrator" on an quick launch icon that is the panel. 

Is there a workaround for this?

All my machines now on 2.6, including the virtual and notebooks. Upgraded with no problems, just have to remember up update, upgrade, boot, update.

LL is really looking professional now, and if more organisations knew of it, I'm sure they'd seriously consider it. Maybe even including the UK NHS, Government and Police forces, many of which are still paying M$ for XP support.

Still believe the 'Raleigh' should be the default appearance, with it's Windows like scroll bars, but at least it's there for selection, once people realise it's got bars.

I've decided that my present Windows 7 is the last Windows I'll buy, so it's no go to Windows 10, and no worries about having to throw out propitiatory software because of driver incompatibilities, yet again. That's something I don't think M$ ever factors in properly.

Anyway, I have a new home brew machine in the pipeline, based on another Mini-ITX, but with 16 GB of memory,just the 2 TB drive to get. I intend on running LL as the main operating system, supporting XP (without net access) in Virtualbox configured with 2 X 500GB drives. Most of my virtual machine work so far has been with VMware on Windows 7, so hope the intended Virtualbox configuration works okay.

Why am I still going to use XP? ,
to support Winamp, with a large music library. It's the only Windows program I can't do without.

I have a few suggestions that might be useful to forum users.

1. Make the Linux Lite logo at the top of the forum a link to the main website. There is already a home button to get back to the forum main page.

2. Make the "Help" button be a link to the online help manual, which should encourage users to use the manual more.

3. There is a broken link to the Linux Lite Shop, which took me to a search page when I clicked it.

Just thought I would mention these as some newer features like the help manual just seem to be overlooked, and I hate to see such a valuable resource not being used.

Installed LL about a year ago now, tried a few flavors mostly Ubuntu based, really liking it.
I've looked through the forums many a times - but recently created an account and a few posts, thought it be time to formally say 'Hello'

Been using Windows since 3.1 and supporting since Win98. I like the day to day of LL is easy to use (familiar) and yet the behind the scenes is a little tricky (still noobish ). I don't think my 9 or 7 year olds really know the difference. Lots of good info and people on here.

And I'm not the only Peterborough resident to switch to Lite on our older machines. Two at our Linux PLUG have. My 'gift' laptop had Vista on it originally, and this Distro really brings it to life. And Lite always worked well in VMWare, for anyone who hasn't yet tried it.

Polished, easy to work with, solid, quick. Thanks to all those who work so hard day after day to keep it going. Looking forward to just using it and not spending hours tinkering.

After installing Linux lite I gained a machine on my network called LAPPY should I be concerned ? I love everything else about Linux Lite & want to stick with it but don't like the appearance on a new machine on my network that I haven't named myself!
