Solution for wireless not working as apparently hard blocked
Posted by: Liteneasy - 12-25-2015, 12:09 PM - Forum: Network - Replies (1)

After hours stumbling through many answers to this problem, getting the blue tooth indicator light to come on, and reloading drivers, using rfkill etc etc I discovered that the Network  icon to turn wireless on was not showing in the panel!  Solution right click the panel, select "add new items" and select "I Indicator Plugin".  How easy.

How to Install Java on Linux Lite
Posted by: valtam - 12-25-2015, 04:20 AM - Forum: Tutorials - Replies (36)

Install Java on Linux Lite - this tutorial will show you how to install Oracle's Java on Linux Lite. You must uninstall the openjdk java on Linux Lite first to have your system recognize and use Oracle's Java. Go into Synaptic package manager and remove packages labeled as 'openjdk' there will be only 2. An example of why people may want to use Oracle's Java over OpenJdk's Java is that they find Minecraft will only run under Oracle's or runs better under Oracle's Java.

NB: Best practice is to use only one type of Java on your system at a time. Yes, you can use symlinks, but this OS is for new folk to linux so we're keeping this very simple.

1. Download Java: 32bit or 64bit depending on your system - https://www.java.com/en/download/linux_manual.jsp

2. Open a terminal where the download is and enter:

Code:
sudo su

Code:
mkdir /usr/lib/jvm/oracle_jdk8

Code:
tar -zxvf jre-* -C /usr/lib/jvm/oracle_jdk8 --strip-components=1

Code:
touch /etc/profile.d/oraclejdk.sh

Code:
leafpad /etc/profile.d/oraclejdk.sh

copy and paste the following into the file, then save and close it:

Code:
export J2SDKDIR=/usr/lib/jvm/oracle_jdk8
export J2REDIR=/usr/lib/jvm/oracle_jdk8/jre
export PATH=$PATH:/usr/lib/jvm/oracle_jdk8/bin:/usr/lib/jvm/oracle_jdk8/db/bin:/usr/lib/jvm/oracle_jdk8/jre/bin
export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/oracle_jdk8
export DERBY_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/oracle_jdk8/db

In the same terminal type, exit.

Now enter:

Code:
source /etc/profile.d/oraclejdk.sh

Do:

Code:
java -version

in a terminal to confirm you have Oracle's Java installed.

Code:
jerry@jerry-VirtualBox:~$ java -version
java version "1.8.0_66"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_66-b17)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 25.66-b17, mixed mode)
jerry@jerry-VirtualBox:~$

  Laptop behaving peculiarly
Posted by: studencik - 12-24-2015, 08:56 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (5)

Hi, I have msi U270 with 8GB ram, Radeon 6310, SSD crucisal 250GB,
I had some problem with my laptop on windows, so I decided definitely to move to linux and buy SSD disk.
On start laptop was working very well, but after about month some problem starts making me crazy.
First situation is when windows in linux stop being able to close, minimize and scroll, but everything else is working well.
I know it because I can close windows by alt+f4 open terminal or applications by keyboard, but mouse clicking changed nothing.
Second very flustrating situation is during surfing the internet. Casual pages are going good, but facebook or for example google document are going so slow, that is just impossible.
Last thing happened today. I started my laptop and suddenly clicking was every one second on screen and I couldn't stop it, so a restarted my laptop and situation i happened again and again.

After this I am thinking I have to have some malicious software, but I thought it's impossible to have it on linux.
It it is possible to have mallicious software on linux lite, please tell me how to deal with it, because it starts going me crazy.

WiFi not even showing despite correct installation
Posted by: alexperk - 12-24-2015, 12:22 AM - Forum: Network - Replies (1)

I cannot get wifi going. Installed Linux Lite parallel to Windows which catches the wifis. Tried kernel but only ethernet is showing there, too. Googled for answers but the only answer i've found and haven't tried is wired connection which i cannot do at this time. In despair, i tried to install ubuntu that i like less but same problem there. Hoping somebody can help me get this cool system LinuxLite connected to internet.

  Multi-Boot Live USB
Posted by: firenice03 - 12-22-2015, 03:22 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (9)

Been toying with the idea of a multi-boot Live USB.. Thought I'd see if any of the good folks on here have done this and which application they used/preferred... I have seen different variations mostly derived/using LinuxSys and grub...

Ultimately I'd like to have 32 and 64 bit versions of LL on a single USB.
