  Darktable Photo Editing
Posted by: aviceda - 03-09-2016, 10:09 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (1)

Just wanted to give a big 'heads-up' to 'Darktable' https://www.darktable.org/, probably my favourite photo-editor which is especially good for 'raw' file use. Unfortunately the version that is available through LL2.8 is rather out-dated (I had to add v2.0 from their PPA as my camera wasn't 'recognized' by v1.4)

Enjoy....

New Install on Intel Braswell CPU
Posted by: Wirezfree - 03-09-2016, 09:56 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (6)

Hi,

Trying to install on a Intel Braswell CPU(N3150)
Set BIOS to all "Legacy".
Booted Live, played a little all seemed O.K
Then installed without any issues, then re-booted.
Immediately after the BIOS splash the start up text is broken/torn, completely un-readable, wait no desktop appears.
Never get to read if any messages pop-up during boot.

So I re-booted Live, all O.K, and then did an inxi:

Code:

In Display settings in a "Live Boot" it's indicating 1920X1080 but it shows 0.0Hz like in inxi above, not sure if this is because it's a Live Boot.?

Doing some Googling it appears Braswell was added from kernel 3.19, so that could be part of the issue.??
(( Although it looks fine in Live Boot with 3.13 ))

Can I install more recent kernel from a live boot.??
If yes, how to do it, I have found some things via Google... But they look very hairy  :o

Any help much appreciated... Thanks

  Can't remove Chrome Web Browser
Posted by: djh - 03-09-2016, 08:14 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (2)

Post installing and updating I then headed to Lite Software and started with the Remove option - however, when trying to uninstall Chrome Web Browser I get the error "Unable to locate package google-chrome-stable"

Ideas?

Edit:  Looks like solution is to install Google Chrome stable and then uninstall Chrome Web Browser!

  Returning back to Linux Land
Posted by: djh - 03-09-2016, 07:54 PM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (3)

Hi all,

I first cut my teeth with Slackware Linux about 20 years ago working for a company pioneering video on demand over ADSL. Did that for about 3 years but since then have only worked with Windows and OS X.  In the last few weeks I have been trying out many different distros just for fun, nearly got fixed on Manjaro but then came across Linux Lite v2.8 and have been pretty impressed!

However, I did have some initial problems when running Installing Updates immediately after installing only to hit my first error dialog saying "couldn't fetch the package cache information lists" - not a good start but fixable with a visit to Dr Google which took me to https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/other...ate-issue/ - which looks like an old problem rearing its head again!

Anyway, liking it very much so far - the only thing I really miss from Manjaro is their boot loader which is smart enough to remember my last used OS (I dual boot with Windows 10).  Is that something that could be done for Linux Lite?

  No signal during boot
Posted by: ihinkican - 03-09-2016, 04:01 AM - Forum: Start up and Shutdown - Replies (10)

Hi
I have installed LL2.8 x64 from a live cd to a modest  dell dimension e521 (AMD sempron 3400+). I upgraded the video card to a gforce gt610  at 1360 x 768 and added 3 gig of ram.

My current issue is that when I boot the computer the monitor has no signal until the desktop(xfce) loads. the live cd had a splash screen to cover the usual code that scrolls during boot as did the previous 2.6 and 2.4.

I did not have the issue with 2.6 installed or any  of the live cd versions of 2.4,2.6.2.8

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

long story short,

In my case the best solution was to go do something else. The system has no signal during boot but once booted the system appears to function. no one has an explaination

second best effort was open /etc/default/grub as root and remove "quiet splash" then sudo update-grub, reboot

If that does not work for you try

hold shift down for the grub menu

hit F4 for a text boot

hit shift F2  to see the boot splash

hit shift F1 to see boot text

remove the # from GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 in /etc/default/grub ( also try add: GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text as the next line, ) then sudo update-grub, reboot

try an optional driver

try another distro
