Integrity of Virtual Machines & Upgrading from LL2.8 to 3.0
Posted by: m654321 - 04-01-2016, 06:03 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (1)

I've another question about VMs, looking ahead to June when LL3.0 is released.
When upgrading from LL2.8 to LL3.0 I will need to do a clean install  as I've understood
that Lite Upgrade won't work when upgrading from one LL series to another. However, I want
my existing VMs to continue working in LL3.0.  How do I ensure this?

Before you answer you will need to know that:
- I have two physical SSD drives in my PC, SSD1 and SSD2
- SSD1 is the primary drive, where LL is installed as has separate root & home partitions
- SSD2 is purely for data storage (including the VMs), its directories being symlinked to /home on SDA1

Many thanks again for your advice.
Mike

  Software compromised
Posted by: aviceda - 04-01-2016, 04:24 AM - Forum: Security & Bug Fixes - Replies (6)

Hi All, wonder if someone would know what to do in this scenario? I recently sung the praises of the photo-editing program Darktable but had to install a later version (previous ones wouldn't accept my new camera RAW software format) I installed v2.02 using the PPA and last week it was 'upgraded' through the Software Updater' to v2.03, however it appears to have been compromised and the front-end is suggesting that 'Darktable' is now a simple tetris-type game.  Wink

How do I inform the Darktable developers that this has occurred?

Excuse my ignorance on the subject, I'm only an amateur hobbyist Wink

Missing Printer Driver Error Message Canon Image Class MF4570dw Printer
Posted by: Jan - 04-01-2016, 04:07 AM - Forum: Printing and Scanning - Replies (1)

For some reason it seems that Canon Image Class printers are particularly difficult to install on Linux.

After completing the installation of Linux Lite 2.8 I went to the Help Manual and followed exactly the procedure outlined for installing Canon printers.  Everything seemed to go well.  As per the instructions, I then opened Menu → System → Install/Remove Software and searched for my printer name and – yup, there it was – Canon NF 4500w series CNUSB #1.  Unfortunately, there is still no driver and I get the error message, “Missing Printer Driver”.  For some reason, although the recommended printer driver has been downloaded, it's still not being detected, despite following the steps outlined above.

Fortunately, the remedy for this dilemma I found on the Ubuntu Forums.  (See topic titled: “Re: Canon Imageclass MF4570dn printer with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS” at  http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2227343)

The most recent Linux_UFRII _PrinterDriver as of February 2016 is now version 3.10.  I followed the instructions from the Ubuntu forums website above, except that when I got to the terminal command

tar -zxvf Linux_UFRII_PrinterDriver_V280_uk_EN.tar.gz

I substituted 310 for 280.

Since I have a 32 bit system, I changed the next line as well to reflect that, so the following line became

cd Linux_UFRII_PrinterDriver_V310_uk_EN/32-bit_Driver/Debian

After typing the command

ls

the two files that appeared were

cndrvcups.common_3.40-1_i386.deb and cndrvcups-ufr2-uk_3.10_1i386.deb

therefore, the next two command lines I entered were

sudo dpkg -i cndrvcups-common_3.40-1_i386.deb

sudo dpkg -i cndrvcups-ufr2-uk_3.10-1_i386.deb

I continued to follow the procedure as listed on the ubuntu forums site and restarted the CUPS.

When I got to the part that reads:

“we are looking for a reply like
lpd://172.23.2.72/CANON-MF4570dw”

Instead, my reply was

direct usb://Canon.MF4500w%20series?serial=01220B1185d&interface=1
direct usb://Canon.MF4500w%20series?serial=01220B1185d&interface=2

Following this I entered the command

sudo /usr/sbin/lpadmin -p Canon-MF4500w -m CNCUPSIR 4500ZK.ppd -v lpd://direct usb/Canon-MF4500w -E

In response to the above I got an error message:

Unknown argument l padmin: usb/Canon-4500w.

Totally frustrated with my continued lack of progress, I went back to the Add printer screen and noticed the option to print a test page which had not been there before.

Honestly, I just about fell off my chair when the printer printed it!

The Printer Test Page indicates the driver is: CNM4500ZK.PPD

I don't know why this has worked.  Because I'm very new to both Linux and Linux Lite, I don't understand what the above commands mean but thought I would document what I've done here with the hope it might be useful to others.

Hi Guys.
I have a dual boot with Ubuntu 14 and Windows 10, i would like to delete completely ubuntu and install Linux Lite.
Is it possible to do that without modifying partitions?
Actually i just need to keep windows 10 partition intact.

unable to open gparted: hal-lock issue
Posted by: m654321 - 03-30-2016, 04:38 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (6)

I am unable to open gparted, using either the 'gui' or 'terminal' methods.
This is the output from the terminal when I use that method...

Code:
mike@LL-G750JS:~$ sudo su
[sudo] password for mike:
root@LL-G750JS:/home/mike# gparted
hal-lock: symbol lookup error: hal-lock: undefined symbol: libhal_acquire_global_interface_lock

This may seems familiar to you Shaggytwodope & Wirezfree, as I posted this a short while ago but since have had no
joy resolving this issue so am recycling it again...

Any help much appreciated.

Supertuxkart - steering wheel not detected in LL2.8
Posted by: m654321 - 03-30-2016, 09:33 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (12)

My 12 year old son has been using our old Asus laptop to play SuperTuxKart on Zorin 9 OS using a USB attached GXT 27 Steering Wheel.
It works superbly and it's great!  So, now I would like to play it myself on my newer Asus laptop using the installed LL2.8 OS...
but there's a glitch.

The steering wheel is apparently not recognised as a device (not listed), under SuperTuxKart/Options/Controls.
Only 'Keyboard 0' is listed as a device.

Within SuperTuxKart Controls I clicked on 'Add a Device' and the advice given was:
"To add a new gamepad/joystick device, simply start SuperTuxKart with it connected and it will appear in the list"

Well I tried that advice but it still doesn't work, even after several reboots.

Any help with this much appreciated.
Many thanks
Mike

LL 2.8 or 3.0 -which is better suited for HP 23-h009?
Posted by: nublix - 03-28-2016, 10:34 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (2)

Is LL 2.8 or  (3.0 to come) is better suited to ? Of the 38 results from the LL Hdware dbase, this system was not listed there. (yet?)

HP Pavilion, 23-h009 AIO computer.

Processor: AMD A6 5200 APU 2.00 GHz (quad core)

One of the main thing here, is how well my teenager's ipod/itunes music library will interact with whatever music app can be used on LL. Clementine/gtkpod.

The teenager, ipod touch and LL
Posted by: nublix - 03-28-2016, 09:52 PM - Forum: Installing Software - No Replies

I told my teenager that by the end of this year, Linux Lite will be replacing another of our Windows computers. This one being the computer she uses the most. (an HP AIO).

Because of the large tower and the odd location of the usb ports, so far, she's given only necessary attention to the computer LL is currently on.

Other than the fact that she'll use LO and FF (research) for school projects etc., the most important selling point for her to use LL as a permanent OS is how well Clementine and or gtk pod  will work with her 5th Gen ipod Touch and her itunes library.

We've downloaded both today -so once she gets to it, we'll hear the verdict.

I found this info http://askubuntu.com/questions/98628/can...th-an-ipod.

Does anyone here have any pointers or suggestions how to best get her ipod to work with LL?

Perhaps to my parental shame Smile,  I should tell her regardless of her verdict, LL is going on that computer.

  Second Life & Firestorm
Posted by: Conf33 - 03-28-2016, 03:26 PM - Forum: Games Support - No Replies

I downloaded the second life file  and the firestorm second life file, unzipped both now im stuck . When i click both files and go to the read me text under installation it says this,The Second Life Linux client can entirely run from the directory you have
unpacked it into - no installation step is required.  If you wish to
perform a separate installation step anyway, you may run './install.sh'

Run ./secondlife from the installation directory to start Second Life.

So i dont know how to get it to run i got confused when it said no installation is required because i see no start or launch in folder :-\

Ok Problem resolved!! This OS rocks so much the more i learn stuff
