I am a total newb on the Linux side, but have loaded Linux Lite multiple times with success.  I have read through some posts and the Ubuntu Wiki for testing audio issues.  But I am not quite sure if I am headed down the right path. Here is what I know.  It is not muted, the audio that should be laying moves the blue bar in the volume control.  What is strange is the outputs, both headphones and line out, are followed by (UNPLUGGED) in the drop down.

I have ran the system report and the section that shows, sound has this listed.

===========================================================
Sound Information

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC260 Analog [ALC260 Analog]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

But after that I tried checking for the proper drivers and started to get lost...  Any help would be great.  Trying to give this older laptop another chance for my grandmother.  Thanks!

This is all very minor, and I'm not going to do much, if anything, to rectify it, but I wanted to cite the situation, especially as one aspect of it also happened on 2.6-2.8.

About two weeks ago, instead of the standard LL 3.0 splash screen, I began getting my desktop wallpaper. Just the wallpaper; no icons, widgets or anything else. This is fine with me, the WP is easier on the eyes top of the morning than the yellow splash, but I can see how it could be a privacy problem for some.

Now, just today, while booting up, instead of the "Linux Lite 3.0" progress screen the system reverted to the purple "ubuntu 16.04" screen. This happened to me on the previous install as well. It seemed to occur when I switched to the proprietary nVidia video driver, but that could be a coincidence. I've been running that driver on 3.0 since the beginning, several weeks now, and this didn't happen until right now.

Finally, on boot down, a couple of weeks ago, for two days the machine would not boot down completely, and I had to force it down from a blinking cursor on a black screen. That rectified itself, but since then I get a fleeting error message on a black screen that says something like "could not initialize OM; ignoring...", and then the machine shuts down successfully.

Nothing major, but I thought the feedback might be useful.

I've installed the most recent LL updates but it didn't update VLC to the latest build (I'm still on 2.1.6 and I think 2.2.4 is out).  I have a few videos that have some issues playing and I need to update VLC to fix them.

How do I update VLC?

Can I get some advice on how to securely transfer files using a GUI please?

I've installed a Ubuntu 14.04 server.  I can SSH from my Linux Lite client to the server no problem.  I am using a non-standard TCP port and I'm using a password (SSH keys didn't work out well for me).

Reading online, advice was to try Nautilus and Filezilla.  I installed Nautilus via "Install/Remove Software" but it doesn't seem to be present in any of the menus.  I also tried Filezilla but I can't seem to get it to work as it looks like it expects SSH keys.

What software are you all using to transfer files securely from your Linux Lite clients to Linux servers (using a non-standard TCP port)?

NB: These are all running in Virtualbox VMs but I don't think that's an issue as I have all other services talking to each other.

I see some Ubuntu Inkscape installs but is there any specifically prepared for linux lite 2.6.  I'm not a full time linux user and not really sure which version of Ubuntu Linux Lite is built on, I assume if I choose the correct version for Ubuntu it should install into Linux LIte 2.6  NO?

Thanks in advance

Hi folks! I run a video webseries where I spend every week testing out a distro, & then give my impressions of it. For yesterday's episode, I decided to take a look Linux Lite 3.0: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJqiCrNrGVY

If you have any feedback on this video, please do type it into the comments section of this video.

Have a good day. Smile

Hi guys,

I have a cannon digital camera that hooks up via usb. When I run the lsusb command, the camera is seen as mounted:

Code:
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 04a9:314e Canon, Inc. PowerShot SD750 DIGITAL ELPH / DIGITAL IXUS 75 / IXY DIGITAL 90

However it doesn't show up in Thunar.

The camera works fine on a Windows machine. I didn't find anything in the Help manual on this, so here I am.

Thanks,
Paul

I am looking for a new laptop. Wont be buying it straight away but got a few questions.

What brands are the good or the bad as far as laptops are concerned? Which brand to stay far away from.
What about graphic cards? Are there brands that dont work with LL or that are a lot of work to get working correct?

I use my laptop for sending/receiving email, browsing websites, occasional watch a youtube video and use libre office (mostly Calc). I do a little work on photo's some time and i create my own customized rom for my nexus 6. I dont play games on it.

My budget will be  up to 450 euro

Hey everyone! I been Googling for an easy way to free up memory with a few terminal commands instead of using a program like Bleachbit. I searched the forum before posting here.

Found this but I keep getting permission denied!

Basically a quite convenient way to go about it.

Thank you.
