Accidentally deleted the bottom start bar
Posted by: icedigger - 02-27-2019, 11:15 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (12)

So I accidentally deleted the bottom start bar.  Is there an easy way to get it back to looking like when I first installed LL 4.2?

  Linux Lite 4.4 RC1 Released
Posted by: valtam - 02-27-2019, 06:24 AM - Forum: Release Announcements - Replies (16)

Release Announcement

Linux Lite 4.4 RC1 is now available for testing.

Yes, that's right, RC1. We have moved off the Beta build model to RC releases as these more accurately reflect the build quality of our pre-Final images.
Linux Lite 4.4 Final will be released 1st April, 2019 New Zealand time.

Changes:

Moved from Betas to RC releases. The RC releases Build number is the date of the actual ISO build eg. Build 24022019 - 24th February 2019. The RC information and Build number will only appear on the default wallpaper for that release, Login screen and the Live Boot screen. The positioning of the text is such that it allows room for desktop widgets like Conky and Lite Widget to appear uncluttered on the right. Finals will not have any build information on the default wallpaper.

Updated the Papirus icon theme to the latest release.

Sound Juicer CD ripper has now been added to Lite Software. To get rip-to-mp3 support, Sound Juicer will also install the Restricted Extras package.

Volume level - the double level volume bug has been eliminated.

Removed all references to Google+ as that service is due to close down on April 2nd 2019.

We have moved from Sourceforge distributed servers to OSDN as OSDN will help to finance our project. Their systems and mirror choices are virtually similar.

Details:

Kernel: 4.15.0-45 (custom kernels also available via our Repository for versions 3.13 - 5.0)
Firefox: 65.0 Quantum
Thunderbird: 60.4.0
LibreOffice: 6.0.7.3
VLC: 3.0.4
Gimp: 2.10.8
Base: 18.04.2

Known Issues:

None as yet (watch this space as more people become involved in the testing process and report back to us).

There is no upgrade to or from RC releases. RC releases are for testing only and it is not recommended to run them as your main or secondary operating system.

Video card support Vs Kernel/Distro ?
Posted by: TheDead - 02-27-2019, 02:04 AM - Forum: Video Cards - Replies (3)

I implore thee and asketh for a parcel of your Wisdom O Great Forum Dwellers!

I know this can be a big question but it there a way to know what video card is officially supported by an Linux distro / Kernel ?
Not the driver list but the supported hardware list like :
Kernel 4.x.x supports these cards :
nVidia GeForce 8600 (or even by chipset, nvidia nv530, etc.)
nVidia GeForce 8800 ..
Intel GMA 4000...and so on.

I usually manage to get everything working by forcing drivers, etc. But sometimes some features like some OpenGL 3D commands are not supported.
Or maybe the other way around, Kernel 4.x.x needs OpenGL 2.0 support to work properly and blah blah.

Maybe there's a command line to "ask" a driver/program for which Kernel it was originally developped? Even better would be before installing it. Wink

Kirk out!

Connecting to Bluetooth, SmartTV, googledrive + POP_OS feature
Posted by: CaperAsh - 02-24-2019, 09:47 PM - Forum: Network - Replies (1)

I recently tried out Pop_OS, though had problems and decided against using for now. The main reason I was trying out is that have been unable to get Bluetooth working usually, cannot connect to a Smart TV in new house am renting, and something else which happened with Pop.

With Pop, suddenly yesterday when I opened up Youtube, a message floated up telling me that if I clicked on it, the Smart TV would stream the youtube and sure enough it did. Unfortunately, the whole system started freezing after that and when I rebooted I couldn't reboot again. Of course could have probably figured it out, but after a day or two of computer issues trying out distros, didn't have the patience. But it was neat when it lasted and at least I know it's possible.

Also, another neat feature in Pop: In File Manager, one of the areas listed was my gmail. I clicked on it and after a minute or two all the files I have saved on Google Drive were displayed on the screen. Neat.

So in POP it's possible to connect to a Smart TV (without even trying!), and to access all those documents in File Manager. I think that's pretty neat.

I have searched for these things, but as usual get hundreds of results but none of them on the topic.

So suggestions:
Consider adding in the Smart TV coding they have in POP (also Ubuntu based);
Consider adding in the google network access or explaining how to do that like in POP.
Have a clear tutorial on bluetooth issues including learning how to know when it's hopeless.

Although I would love help with these things, it's been a long time since I ever had an issue addressed here, so am not expecting any. I just learn to live with various limitations and get on with life. No worries. (And not complaining, either.)

All best,
Ash.

  Lost 70GB of SSD space
Posted by: timbuck2 - 02-24-2019, 03:25 AM - Forum: Hard Drives and SSDs - Replies (8)

I had to process about 70GB of PDF files which were compressed.  I printed them via cups-pdf to uncompressed format and moved them to mechanical hard drive.

This took several days of processing. After the PDF file would print, it took about 10 minutes before the actual file was created.  So I assume the data was spooled by cups.  The processing was done on my 256GB SSD which Linux Lite boots from.

The problem is I had around 135GB free before the processing and now I have 30GB free.  I tried rebooting to clear tmp files, but still don't have the space back.

What can I try to clean my drive up and get the space back?

dan@~$ who
dan      tty7        2019-02-16 21:14 (:0)
dan@~$ reboot
User nobody is logged in on ???.
Please retry operation after closing inhibitors and logging out other users.
Alternatively, ignore inhibitors and users with 'systemctl reboot -i'.
dan@~$ users
dan
dan@~$

I am assuming "Nobody" is a user created by the update proc.
I just did a "shutdown" command and restarted.

Minimum concern, just asking.

Dual boot with Win7 - problem with boot menus on Lenovo laptop
Posted by: br1anstorm - 02-22-2019, 03:22 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (11)

[warning and disclaimer:  this post is more about Win7 and Lenovo laptops than about Linux Lite. But as a member of both Linux Lite and Linux Mint forums, and user of both distros, I'm hoping that someone here might be able to shed light on a slightly odd problem I have encountered].
I have a spare - second-hand, refurbished - Lenovo T430 laptop which came with a clean (re)install of Win7.  I decided to set it up to dual boot with Linux.  But in the slightly untypical way that I already have dual-boots on my main (Samsung) laptop and my desktop computer, I wanted to use EasyBCD to modify the Windows bootloader to point to the Linux Grub option, rather than having GRUB replace and take over the Windows MBR bootloader.

It should work fine.  But in this instance it didn't. I think the problem lies in the way the Windows MBR was configured.  But I don't know how to diagnose and investigate.

If anyone can offer advice, I'd welcome it.  Here are the clues:

1) When Win7 alone was on the computer, I noticed that on initial boot up the Windows boot menu-screen flashed up very briefly with two options - 'Boot to Windows', or 'Restore the Original Windows Image'.  The latter choice came with a warning note at the bottom of the menu screen that this would erase all existing data.  In any case the delay default must be about 2 secs, because it then boots up by default into Win7.  Comment:  I have other computers with Win7 installed, and I have never seen this menu appear on booting any of them;

2) when I looked at the partitioning using GParted, I noticed that there were already three primary partitions on the hard drive:  100MB System Reserved, 13GB Recovery, and the main Win7 partition (which I shrank to make room for Linux);

3) while running the Linux installer (i was actually aiming to install Mint), I noticed that on the screen offering the usual options (install alongside, replace, or 'something else'), the installer reported that there were "multiple OSs already on the system". Comment: I thought that a bit odd, but assumed that maybe it was seeing the existing Recovery partition as containing a duplicate, or image, of the Win7 OS.  I went ahead anyway with 'Something Else', installed Mint into appropriate partitions, put its Grub on to [/], and completed the install without any issues;

4) the next step (as those who use EasyBCD will know) is to boot back into Win7, open EasyBCD, and add the Linux distro - telling EasyBCD where to find the Grub.  After a reboot, that should work - as it does perfectly well on my other computers.  Normally, the Windows boot menu comes up, offering Win7 or Linux.  Choosing the latter takes you on to the Grub screen, from which you boot into your Linux distro.  Simple....normally!

5) this however did not happen.  On reboot, the first screen fleetingly offered was as at (1):  the same Windows boot menu for 2 secs, offering only Boot Windows Normally, or Restore Original Windows Image.  No sign of Linux, and no way to boot into it.

I'd like to know why EasyBCD evidently didn't manage to modify the MBR to link to the Grub and enable me to boot into it.  (The EasyBCD forum is not very active - I get no response there).

I'm wondering if the Win7 Recovery arrangements are part of a Lenovo configuration which has already modified the MBR (or BCD) to offer a System Restore Image.  Has anyone else encountered this?

Can I go into a Live session and go looking at the Windows boot files?  If so, what should I look for?

I know I could abandon all this and go the traditional route of dual boot with Grub replacing the Windows bootloader in the MBR.  But I'm worried that the MBR may already have been modified, and I am puzzled that the installer appears to see multiple systems on the computer already.  So I hesitate to try to install Linux and have Grub take over the boot process completely.  Also I hate unsolved problems......I'd like to know why I get this current boot menu, before I try to set up something else.
