Missing update button.Can someone give me exact command for launcher?: )

I am trying to read up and prepare before making the change from XP to Linux Lite.  I plan to install Linux Lite on my (spare) old laptop, to see how it all works.

Can I set up this old laptop, once I have installed Linux Lite,  to connect wirelessly to my Canon MP 560 printer/scanner?  I understand I can download from the Canon website a driver for the MP 560 which works with Linux Debian OSs.  Will this be suitable for Linux Lite?  If so, what else do I need to do?

My printer is connected by wire to my Netgear router which is linked (wired or wireless) to my main daily computer still running WinXP.  The printer has wireless connectivity.  My wife can find it and access it directly wirelessly from her (ahem....) Windows 7 netbook.  I'd like to do the same from a Linux Lite laptop.  How do I make it happen?

I'm new to Linux, and to these forums (just put up my first post in the Introductions).

I haven't even installed Linux Lite yet, and already I have a question.

I have (successfully) burned an .iso disk - a LiveCD - so decided as a trial to boot into Linux Lite and run it from the CD, without installing it, on an old laptop.  It's a Compaq Evo N610c, with 40GB hard drive, a Pentium4 CPU, and 1GB of RAM.

It boots up into Linux Lite from the CD (although curiously with a penguin-shaped black hole where I assume the image of a penguin should be....).

A brief exploration of the desktop seems to suggest that all works well and is easy to understand.  So far so good.

BUT..... when the time comes to shut down, it gets a bit weird.  Linux Lite seems to shut down most of the way.  The screen goes through various steps towards going blank.  The CD pops out of the tray..... but then the screen displays a lurid set of brightly coloured concentric rings or circles (red and green on black background) with a tiny slim "progress bar" just below-centre.  There is initially some pixel-flickering movement along that bar.  Then it hangs.  For hours.  No hibernation, no screensaver, nothing else happens.  The only way to shut down is to power off.

It doesn't seem to be just because I'm running Linux Lite from the CD.  I did find an old post on the forum archive which described something similar, but some time ago, and on a different computer.  Is this a long standing problem which hasn't been fixed?  Is it particular to some brands of computer? 

I'm already wondering.... should I go ahead and install or not?  If this is going to be the normal behaviour, I may abandon the Linux Lite idea straight away.  But I really don't want to do that - or at least not yet.  Nor do I want to start messing around with cmd prompts and terminals.

Can anybody offer comfort, reassurance, and an explanation or solution?

This is my first post, just to get acquainted with the forum and its members.

I suspect I am one of a rapidly growing number who are preparing to make the leap of faith from Windows XP into the Linux universe.

Already I am daunted - by the astonishing range of possible versions and variations of the Linux OSs.  When Windows comes in just one current OS, with maybe two or three editions, the proliferation of Linux options is confusing.

I am encouraged - by the multitude of forums, blogs and websites which offer wisdom and advice.  I have already tried to browse through some of them.  But it's almost a lifetime task!

I am also intimidated - by the extent to which Linux users seem to slide swiftly sideways into the gobbledegook of "cmd" language as a way of explaining or resolving issues.  As someone who has never responded to a command prompt in his life, I am already not looking forward to what happens when you "open a terminal" in Linux.

I am as new to Linux as it's possible to be.  But the fact that I have registered here proves that I have dipped my toe in the water, and decided (at least for now) that opting for Linux Lite may be the best way into this new world.

I confess that I have not even installed Linux Lite yet!  I have just tried it out by running it from a LiveCD.  Already some questions have arisen.  But I'll raise them in separate posts in the appropriate forums.

Meanwhile, I hope this journey will be interesting, fun, and not too stressful!

Hi from Western Kentucky. 
I installed Linux Lite 1.0.8 on 3 AMD based machines. It works great on the one with a Sempron processor and appears to work well on the other two with Athlon XP 2400 processors with the exception of Youtube.  The website comes up, but when a video is clicked, it never loads and htop indicates 100% CPU usage with Firefox being the worst offender. Flash is installed on all three.  Am I missing something obvious or is it likely to not work ?

Thanks in advance.  I look forward to reviving other old machines with this OS.

How can I identify what version of Linux Lite I have installed?

I have tried many of the commands on other Linux forums, but the results are always about Ubuntu.
Is there a way to tell if I am using Linux Lite 1.0.6 or 1.0.8?

after several tries I settled to run Linux Lite (LL) out of a boot CD.  originally tried to install along side Windows 7 but failed.  On the second boot I settled for running out of the boot disk and saw a few things I'd like to know if and/or how they are fixable.

Issues I'd like to learn to fix:
1. The LL tabletop is smaller than my monitor screen (monitor is 24", Tabletop 21")
2. Twice, when I shutdown it hangs.... and I am forced to do a forced shutdown
3. I am a Trader and use 4 monitors out of 2 graphic cards - LL repeats the same screen in 2 monitors.
4. Ultimately, I'd like too be able to install LL along side Windows (until I am confident of my ability)
5. I would like LL to operate out of (my current) C: drive and store all Data in E: drive

My System Hardware-wise is:
Z87 Deluxe Motherboard, 1707 Firmware (USB 3.0 able)
Intel i7-4770K CPU @ 3.5 GHz
16.0 GB RAM
2 NVIDIA GeForce GT 630 Graphics
4 Monitors (2 LG 21", 2 Dell 24")
One Intel SSD 520 Series 240 GB where the OS and Programs reside
One Seagate 1TB 3.5" SATA 7200 RPM HDD for Data (it contains all Documents, Pictures, Music, an Videos)

I'm looking at installing a package that has a dependency on Perl 5.8. Linux Lite has Perl 5.14.2-6ubuntu2.4. Are there likely to be any issues in upgrading to 5.8 (perl-base, perl-modules and perl-doc)?

Hello everyone!

I've been using linux lite for about around 9 months now, and so far haven't really had any problems so far. I've just installed lmms, and have noticed that even with my headphones plugged in the sound continues to play through the speakers. Does anyone know how I can fix this?
