  not booting with grub2
Posted by: davesurrey999 - 06-08-2014, 02:36 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (23)

Previously I have been able to boot into Linux Lite 1.0.8 using grub 2 on my test box that runs grub2 from a Linux Mint install.

The install of Lite 2.0 seemed to work ok but when I come to boot it I get "error file name expected...press any key to continue" although grub does appear to be finding it with its os--prober as it appears in its list of available distros. It just won't boot.

Is anyione multibooting 2.0 with grub2 that can help?
Does anyone know what parameters I need to do a manual entry into grub for lite 2.0

Before anyone asks, yes I have checked the MD5 and yes I've tried it using another type of CD

Also other distros work just fine.

I need to do an evaluation of Lite as I am considering using it in the charity where I volunteer helping senior citizens learn pcs and also converting their XP PCs to Linux.
Thanks

  Help Please urgent.

Have been running live CD LL2.0 on desktop without difficulty. 160gb two partition - main Vista + second smaller HP backup/recovery.  Main partition had circa 30 GB free into which the LL2.0 was to go..

Tried to install dual boot but installation did not give me the option.  So not wishing to replace vista I  ceased installation via the "quit" option.

On shutting don LL2.0 live removing CD and then rebooting desktop, the computer is hanging and not going into Vista mode.  Retried  start up of vista after having switched desktop off from the mains.

Any guidance as to how to get desktop functioning on Vista again much appreciated.  Hope i have not lost all the data on the disk.

Thank you.

  reference manager
Posted by: taputechnic - 06-08-2014, 12:05 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (1)

Hello, I am a first-time poster, new to the forum, but not new to Linux Lite, or Linux.

I am looking for a reference manager that is compatible with LibreOffice 4.  Does anyone know of one?  I have been using Bibus exclusively recently, but I had used Referencer somewhat in the past.  They all have their quirks, but Bibus is what worked best and most easily, that is, until LibreOffice 4 came out.  Until then, I can't upgrade to Linux Lite 2, or any modern distro that will invariably include LibreOffice 4.

The LTS support is why I migrated to Linux Lite (albeit a short migration from Xubuntu).  The 6-month upgrade cycles were for me one step forward & one step backward.  I am slowly replacing all of my computers with Linux Lite (although I'll keep one Xubuntu box, which recognizes my Android phone effortlessly, which is a topic for another day).

Thanks!

Unable to remove multiple entries from Whisker menu
Posted by: justme2 - 06-08-2014, 11:36 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (1)

Lite 2 successfully installed on eee PC901 (on 32GB class 10 SDHC), everything runs/tested ok but one problem apparent. I have installed Wine and some applications have multiple entries under various menu choices (eg Wine, Other and Program Files).  The extra entries can not be deleted as they do not appear in the menu editor, where there is just one entry showing and only one of the main menu entries actually works. The others are just 'dead' entries. I guess there  will be a file for the menu which could be edited manually but where does it live?

If an incorrect path is entered in the menu editor, the new entry is not accepted by the editor, but it does show in the main menu. It seems that is the reason for the 'dead' multiple entries.

Thanks for a brilliant new release  Smile

[SOLVED] Cannot remove Mumble & (Ristretto-) Image Viewer Whiskermenu entries
Posted by: lurchis - 06-07-2014, 03:40 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (6)

Hey!
I removed Mumble & Ristretto via Synaptic Package Manager. But the menu-entries remained in the Whiskermenu.
I then removed the corresponding  *.desktop - files in the following folders (and rebooted):

-/usr/share/applications &
-/.local/share/applications

I uninstalled Whiskermenu and used the classic xfce-menu - the entries were still there. Now I'm back to Whiskermenu still searching for a solution to get rid of the entries.

What else could I try? Thanks in advance from a Linux beginner.

I have been using Linux Lite on a 2nd machine since the first version was released. That 2nd machine is mainly used by my wife and son for all their computing needs.

I was a member on the old linux distro forums but thought it about time I joined the new swanky forum.
