  Labels etc
Posted by: robert - 06-17-2014, 03:25 PM - Forum: On Topic - No Replies

Am wondering how many members on here are in UK and who would like to order labels together in one order to cut down on the shipping costs.

  Java problem in Chrome
Posted by: mandoran - 06-17-2014, 07:44 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (2)

I have an odd problem recently, Java works in Firefox, but not in Chrome. I can't understand how to tackle this, since it working in Firefox seems to indicate that the plugin is installed properly.

It has always been a bit troublesome in Chrome, but now it claims not to be installed in Chrome on many sites, and this is clearly not the case.

Is this a known problem? Haven't found anything searching in old and new forums.

  CD/DVD Burner warning message
Posted by: davesurrey - 06-17-2014, 01:31 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (14)

Starting CD/DVD Burner I get
Failed to initialise gstreamer transcoder: An error occurred setting gstreamer up for transcoding. (falling back to basic implementation.)
Do I assume this means I need to install a gstreamer add-on and in which case what would that be?
Thanks

  Grub Quirk
Posted by: jefboyardee - 06-16-2014, 03:09 AM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - Replies (10)

Just passing this along cuz I have a soft spot for LL:

1. I install Linux Lite.
2. I boot to Linux Mint, my keeper distro.
3. I edit Grub Customizer to my tastes. Its description for Lite: menuentry script:os-prober.
4. I try to boot into Lite; get some 'expected filename' error message.
5. I reinstall Lite and also install Grub Customizer there. Its description: menuentry script:linux / default name: description: Linux Lite 2.0 GNU/Linux. By the way, I didn't edit those lines, just the first-line names.

It works fine that way, probably because of the differences up there. It very well could've been my error, but I've done steps 1-3 on dozens of distros and Lite is the first to trip me up. I've also tried all this more than once to confirm that it's repeatable. I can email pix if you like.

8) Big thumbs up for the LL website improvements. The 'recent posts' and 'news' sections are great.

Help tried everything to get wifi working!
Posted by: tommykry - 06-15-2014, 05:26 PM - Forum: Network - Replies (6)

Hi all this is my last chance to try and get the wifi working on my sisters laptop before she heads home, as I've spent most of the weekend on it and still can't get the wifi working.
The laptop is an HP 2000-299wm i'm using the latest 64bit ver of linux lite, the wifi adapter in the laptop is:Realtek RTL8188CE
i've tried everything i could from several searches online and still can't get it to work, this is my last chance before i just have to put windows back on it for her, everything else seems to work except for the wifi?e wifi
If i click on the network icon it lets me enable wifi but doesn't show any networks in the list.
This same laptop w windows works perfect with the wifi, i so wanted my sister to give linux lite a chance but she needs the wifi to work.
Thanks Sad
Tommy

  LL wont run live
Posted by: aussieboy - 06-15-2014, 03:01 AM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (5)

Tried to run LL 2.0 live but no go. Checked boot order... no problem. The ISO disc starts and gets to the music and then dies.
No other distro is affected in live mode. Would appreciate some help as I don't understand this one.

Is there a way to update V1.0.8 to V2.0 without loosing partitions and data
Posted by: bike_dad - 06-14-2014, 08:49 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (3)

Hello community,
I started to use Linux with Linux Lite V1.0.8 some months ago - great distro for me as a user who wants to use a browser, a document editor and an email client and who is fed up with Microsoft's license policy and changing os system names....
Linux Lite is really easy to use and I installed the latest V2.0 on my netbook - what shall I say? It works perfectly and I would like to update this notebook with Linux Lite V1.08 to V2.0.
Attached you will find my notebook's system report - don't know if this is helpful.
On this machine is installed Linux Lite as well as Windows XP.
Is there a way to upgrade V1.0.8 to V2.0 without loosing all my partitions, data and installed programs?
I really appreciate your help.
Thanks in advance.

Robert

  Linux Lite Kernel
Posted by: Valtam - 06-14-2014, 06:54 PM - Forum: Linux Lite Software Development - Replies (325)

So that we can better support new hardware, we've starting producing a custom Linux Lite kernel. I've yet to decide if this is something that will be offered post-release of each Linux Lite, or with the release.
When compiling this kernel, there is special emphasis on hardware support. I painstakingly go through the entire kernel and add as much hardware support as possible.

For this to be a success, I need your help.
We need people with the following graphics cards: ATI, Intel and nVidia.

These kernels will be beta quality until I am satisfied we have stable, reliable kernels available in both 32bit and 64bit versions. If you'd like to participate, do the following:

Open a terminal and do:

Code:
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-linuxlite-3.15.0 linux-image-linuxlite-3.15.0 -y

Ignore any errors in the terminal.

NB: This should NOT be tested on your everyday machine unless you know how to remove the kernel from a tty. If you have a spare pc or laptop lying around with the above graphics cards we really need your feedback and your results. Also if you are using VirtualBox, these LL Kernels will not work with it. You'll have to use the stock kernel that ships with LL if you want to use VirtualBox.

We will only release the latest stable mainline kernels, if you're not sure what these are see here - https://www.kernel.org/ it will be the kernel version in the yellow box on the right.

Thank you Smile

Valtam
