For whatever it means Firefox warned me that this forum's certificate had expired. I ignored it.

Base RAM Usage 32 bit/Suitability for New Users
Posted by: cuscotravelservices - 06-20-2014, 03:20 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (1)

Hi All,

I am investigating options for my Spanish speaking Landlord's old desktop with a Pentium 4 2.66 GHz CPU, 512MB RAM (400MHz) and a 40 GB Hard Drive (7200 RPM ATA 133 - IDE).

Without any optimisations nor modifications what is the Memory Usage when the system is ready for use?

How much Hard Drive space does a Default install require?

What would be the approximate Boot Time for the above Hardware specifications?

My Landlord is not knowledgeable about Computers but his daughters are regular users. How suitable is Linux Lite 2.0  for people such as my Landlord? Is there a Spanish language pack available?

Thanks, Michael

Install Flash in Chromium Web Browser
Posted by: Valtam - 06-19-2014, 07:27 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (3)

The only drawback of this is that it will also install Chrome. To install Flash in Chromium open a terminal and do:

Code:
sudo apt-get install pepperflashplugin-nonfree

  2.0 Install problem
Posted by: Coastie - 06-19-2014, 06:07 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (7)

Installed 2.0. Firefox and Thunderbird would not start because they were said to be running. Rebooted as instructed. Still the would not start. uninstalled  both completely and installed Chrome and tried to import .mozilla from backup file to see if I could get bookmarks. Chrome said Firefox was running even though uninstalled. Reinstalled Firefox and Thunderbird without using backup .mozilla and still said they were running. Tried to open Firefox from install dvd but still said were already open. I think they may have run on installation or dvd before I replaced .mozilla and .thunderbird.

Reinstalled previous OS and everything works.

Is this fixable so I can run LL 2.0?

  Simple Home Networking
Posted by: Colin23erk - 06-19-2014, 12:09 PM - Forum: Network - Replies (8)

I have 2 laptops that connect via a wireless router to the internet that I would like to connect together in a network to move files etc between the laptops

Looking on the net there appears to be no  way in Linux to do it  via a GUI (aka Win7 ).

If Linux Lite is to replace Microsoft it needs a simple  Home Networking capability for people who just want it work with the minimum of knowlege

How to get a ZTE MF180 USB Modem to work on an ASUS X451CA
Posted by: linuxlite99 - 06-19-2014, 08:16 AM - Forum: Network - Replies (1)

How to get a ZTE MF180 USB Modem to work on an ASUS X451CA  laptop with Linuxlite 2.

Option 1

Insert Modem

Boot System

“sudo lsusb” shows
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 19d2:0117 ZTE WCDMA Technologies MSM

In File Manager under drives “ZTE MMC Storage” shows

After some time the Modem will be available in “Network Connections”

Option 2

Boot System

Insert Modem

“sudo lsusb” shows
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 19d2:2000 ZTE WCDMA Technologies MSM MF627/MF628/MF628+/MF636+ HSDPA/HSUPA

“sudo rmmod usb-storage”
“sudo lsusb” still shows
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 19d2:2000 ZTE WCDMA Technologies MSM MF627/MF628/MF628+/MF636+ HSDPA/HSUPA

sudo modprobe usb-storage
- Under drives “ZTE USB SCSI CD-ROM: Telecom Modem” shows-up
- Under devices “Telecom Modem” shows-up
- On Desktop “Telecom Modem” shows-up

Eject “Telecom Modem” from desktop
“sudo lsusb” now shows
Bus 003 Device 004: ID 19d2:0117 ZTE WCDMA Technologies MSM

- Under drives “ZTE USB SCSI CD-ROM” and “ZTE MMC Storage” show-up
- In “Network Connections” the modem can now be used

After some time the Modem will be available in “Network Connections”

PS. On a HP DV6000 laptop just insert it after boot and it will show up in “Network Connection”.

Forum Interface - How to post pics, links, code ...
Posted by: gold_finger - 06-19-2014, 04:18 AM - Forum: Tutorials - Replies (3)

How to Post Pictures, Links, Code and Quotes when making a Forum Post?

General rule:  Position your cursor at the point where you want to make the insertion and click there to set the point.  Then click the forum interface button corresponding to the type of insertion you're making.  That will put coded blocks at the point you designated in the post.  Paste between those two blocks.

To post a screenshot or other picture use an image posting site to post your image to, copy the provided link to your image, then hit the "Insert Image" button and paste your link between the two image blocks that are inserted in your posting.  (Here is one such site to use:  https://imgur.com/.)
Eg.  [ img ]http://i.imgur.com/qh6QlvD.png[ /img ]

To post a link to a website, hit the "Insert Hyperlink" button and paste your link between the url blocks.
Eg.  [ url ]http://www.linuxliteos.com[ /url ]

To post terminal commands or output from terminal commands. Copy/Paste your terminal output into your forum reply post, then re-highlight the pasted output and hit the code button along the top of the reply interface to enclose it in code blocks.  After finalizing your post, the terminal output will now show up inside a separate box of a set size with scroll ability and which preserves the correct formatting of the output.  That makes reading it easier and it also gives you the ability to post long output in a small space.

  • Eg.  [ code ]sudo blkid[ /code ]
  • Produces a code box like this
Code:
sudo blkid

To post quotes, hit the "Insert Quote" button and paste the quoted text between the two quote blocks.  If you want to quote a prior post of someone here on the forum you can just hit the "Quote" button on their post and it will insert the quote where your cursor is on the reply interface.  That will quote everything from their post.  If you just want to quote a small portion of what someone wrote, hit the quote button on the reply interface and change the first quote block in the following way:
  • Instead of this:  [ quote ] ... [ /quote ]
  • Make this:  [ quote="gold_finger" ] ... [ /quote ]
  • And you'll see something like this:
  • Quote:Here is a quote.
(NOTE:  The examples have spaces between the code brackets and the words inside them.  That was necessary for showing the examples.  When doing it for real there are NO SPACES between the brackets and the words inside.)

Wifi USB Adapter stops working intermittently
Posted by: Colin23erk - 06-18-2014, 07:20 PM - Forum: Network - Replies (38)

My internal Wifi  failed to see my Router soon after I started with Linux  so I installed a USB dongle I had

The dongle works OK for a while and then I loose my Internet but not the wifi  connection . If I disconnect/connect wifi it works ok for a while . There does not appear to be a pattern to when it fails.

It is a Realtek RTL8188CUS 802.11n using  WLAN Adaptor driver : rtl8192cu which is also installed in WinXP

I am hoping someone can give me a solution that I can understand preferably using GUI as other than trying to sort the problems I have had I have no need to learn CLI . I just want to do everyday tasks on my computer.

I have searched the Internet and there could be an issue with the Linux Drivers rtl 8192cu for the Realtek Adapter . Unfortunately for me the solutions mostly involve using  Command Line . I have tried some but get confused when they are not recognized.
With the many flavors of Linux I am not sure if they all should work in  Lite 2 . Also having  only a very limited knowledge of CLI its difficult to know if the commands given require me to be in the correct command structure before they will work .
Also the outputs are in such an abbreviated  form that needs converted to normal language to know what they mean !!!!
