Is it ok to "remove --purge" Firefox from a terminal?

Is it ok to totally purge Firefox from Linux Lite? Would it delete any packages that are needed elsewhere?

New "Install Additional Software" look needs improvement
Posted by: AndyOpie150 - 06-23-2014, 02:45 PM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - Replies (8)

Nothing major, but pretty significant.

Some downloads are pretty big. Most people with a Windows OS on a low resource machine are going to be older. They probably have slow connection speeds (they don't like change very much). Most still have there internet service from a cable run from the telephone poles (no high speed fiber optics).

This is what I see on a regular basis as I try to upgrade my spiritual brothers and sisters older machines to a faster more secure Linux operating system.

Keeping in mind they don't like change (I usually have to go thru a lot of explaining to even get them to try Linux), when they just see a box with a blue bar going back and forth like a Cylon Warriors optical array and it's been over 5 minutes and they see no indication of progress, they are apt to cancel the download then have me remove the Linux operating system in favor of their security swiss chessed Windows XP.

That being said: If instead of the current indicator a download indicator like Synaptic or even the terminal would be a better choice. Something with a connection speed indicator as well as time to complete download indicator. An automatic view of the details wouldn't hurt either.
Something to let them know everything is working properly (not knowing leads to fear and doubt).

Because of this I am forced to have only one Linux OS in my arsenal to help get Windows XP off their low resource machines (single core processor with 256MB to 512MB of RAM).
I would really like to use Linux Lite as well. It has a lot going for it, but all they will see is that one imperfection.

Also: Could Midori be added to the "Install Additional Software" list? Chrome/Chomium and Firefox are just to resource hungry to work very well on low resource machines. I have found the Midori does the job way better.

Other than that a good music player like Audacious, and a good E-pub reader like Calibre will also be something to put in "Install Additional Software" (putting "Install Additional Software" into the task bar wouldn't hurt either).

Keep up the great work.

  changing default programs
Posted by: davesurrey999 - 06-23-2014, 12:54 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (6)

I need to set up LL 2.0 to make it super easy for XP refugees.
How can I set the default programs specifically for replaying CDs and DVDs?
In Linux Lite I would go to Preferred Apps but in LL this doesn't contain a Removable Media section nor Music or Video categories.
As it stands clicking on DVD or CD icon on the desktop doesn't not auto play and getting a DVD to play in VLC is far too complex for our over 60s users.
Thanks

I am looking for a simple light weight Image Viewing Program that will let me browse through my photos, and also create Slideshows.
Any suggestions?

Linux Lite Hardware Database hits 600+ user submitted entries
Posted by: Valtam - 06-23-2014, 05:27 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (1)

Thank you to everyone who took the time to upload their configuration, you are amazing!

If you'd like to add your current configuration to the database, head over to here - https://www.linuxliteos.com/hardware.html we've made selecting your hardware as simple as choosing from a drop down box for each component. If your hardware is not listed in the drop down boxes please let me know and I'll add it.

"Linux Lite 2.0 Updates" vs. "Software Updater"
Posted by: Coastie - 06-23-2014, 04:00 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (11)

I am familiar with the "Linux Lite Updates" or "Install Updates" that runs in the terminal from previous editions of Linux Lite.  This edition (2.0) has a "Software Updater" which either I did not notice before or was not in the previous editions. It appears to just use PPA's from Ubuntu but will let you add other PPA's.

Could the PPA(s) from Linux Lite be added to it for an automatic updater?

Installing LinuxLite 2.0 on a fresh harddrive
Posted by: T1125P - 06-22-2014, 07:25 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (2)

Hi, all new to this forum, but I had LinuxLite 1.0.6 for a while now and I love it. Now I want to install 2.0 on my Netbook. So what I did was take out my harddrive from my netbook its a 360GB SSD, and plugged it into my PC and formatted it using Windows 7 disk management to fully erase it. Now it's NTFS. So the problem now is, when I put my harddrive back in my netbook, used the liveusb to install 2.0 it gives me the error unknown filesystem. The drive is completely erased, is there a way maybe I have to format it to ext4 in Windows using a program that will let me?  :-\ All I want is LinuxLite on my netbook as the sole OS nothing else.

Thanks all  Smile

  Problem reading NAS files
Posted by: Thicksilver - 06-22-2014, 06:28 PM - Forum: Network - Replies (3)

Hi All

A pleasure to meet you.

Never been on a forum before and my linux/unix experience stretches all the way back to yesterday so sorry if I am having trouble with the blindingly obvious. I'm also an old guy and the the jargon and TLAS'a are a bit of a stretch at times so I crave your collective indulgence. I've been back throgh the archive for the last year with no similar problems which gives me some confidence I am just missing something simple (who said a brain?) which smarter people just fix.

To horse so to speak. I loaded Linux Lite yesterday onto an old Samsung N140 notebooke after speaking to the village evangelist (for LL) and it was a breeze. Much faster than W7 for start-up, the internet and all the things you already know better than me.

I keep all my data on a D-Link 323 NSA (Raid 1)so I hooked up following the instructions on the site. No problem so far. In use the device is recognised and I can access the NSA and navigate the file structure.

If I try to load a JPG by clicking on it or opening using using image viewer I get no error message but also no picture. If I do the same using GIMP I can see the thumbnail but get an error message which tells me that the folder and file don't exist and the thumbnail is out of date. If I navigate to the same picture from within image viewer I can view it. No joy with GIMP though. With documents I can't get anywhere. Libreoffice loads and then vanishes whichever way I come at it. Most of the documents, some .odt some .doc were created using open office. I copied a document to the laptop and Libreoffice opened it fine. I have had some limited joy with PDF's. Sorry about the bad language but my Windows computers access all of the files with no trouble so it is not a data corruption problem.

I would really appreciate a nudge in the right direction.

Sorry to a be a bit long winded but we wrinklies never know when to stop....

Hey all

Been using LL for a few days, it's great.

No bloat, nice and smooth and not buggy.

Which is what i wanted after 14.04LTS and the not so good software centre.

I'll be staying with this distro. 8)
