I've been trying Deja Dup for user file backups.  It's very good, but the restore facility is limited in LL.  You can restore a whole snapshot of your files, but you can't restore previous versions of individual files or folders (and their contents).  It appears to be designed to be used in association with Nautilus file manager, rather than LL's usual Thunar.  In Nautilus, you can right-click on a file to get an option to restore the version from any previous Deja Dup backup.

After some research, I've found that the solution is to set up a custom action in Thunar:
1. Select Edit and Configure custom actions ...
2. Click on the + button to create a new custom action.
3. Complete the text boxes:
    Name:  Restore previous version
    Description:  Restores earlier file versions via Deja Dup
    Command:  deja-dup --restore %F
4. Select an icon if you want one.
5. Click on Appearance Conditions tab and check all 6 boxes.
6. Click on OK.

You will need to log out and log in again for the change to take effect.

You will now be able to right-click on a file or folder in Thunar to restore earlier versions.  If you don't want to be able to restore whole folders (use with care!), don't check the directories box in the Appearance Conditions tab.

Not vital, but would be nice to have idea of size of program selected for installation either
a) in the initial selection screen add a column indicating size or
b) in the download progress bar a print of size and/or % done etc.

Hi there:
I'm a 67 yo retired Pharmacist, living now in N. Central Mexico (Zacatecas, ZA). I have been involved with computers since the 80s, and serve as resident IT guy for the neighborhood.
I've used Windows, and various Linux distros, but I won a small computer that had Win7 installed but it was a bootleg. I searched for some light weight distros and found Linux lite worked best on this particular machine.
Still have a few teething problems but at least it's working.

After a while powered up (anywhere from a few hours to a few days), things start to get corrupted.  First (usually), it's random text.  Soon, it's ALL text (in and out of a browser) and finally, it's EVERYTHING including the desktop (it will show corrupted images of "stuff", usually from my last browser session.  This time, everything was jacked up except the toolbar.  A quick reboot and everything is fine again.....until next time.  The last time I played around with Linux (Ubuntu, I think), the same thing happened (on my SSD....I'm using a HDD this time) and I reinstalled Windows as nobody could figure it out.  It's not allowed to attach a screenshot but I have one if someone can figure out how to get it.  If this keeps up, I'll go back to Windows again.  (2 different HDDs (1HDD, 1SSD), same computer, different distros)

I would like to set up several workspaces but then be able to save them so that they return after a reboot. I have not had LL very long but my experience with both Windows and other Ubuntu distros is that using hibernate works fine except that things get unstable very quickly so you have to reboot and start all over anyway. Because of this, I rarely use multiple workspaces. But if they could be saved, well that would make having them make a whole lot more sense.

I hope someone knows how to do this.

After reading Linux Lite kernel post, I began to wonder about the pros and cons of upgrading kernel. Some comments in that thread expressed pleasure in improved performance with 3.15 (the general one, not the LL one), and now I gather there is 3.18 available. Before experimenting I would like to learn the pros and cons of doing such a thing.

Any advice, or is there a basic policy for LL2 which is taking care of that sort of thing automatically with the updates routines?

Post installation Transmission completion of job sound alarm doesn't work. I think the issue is in these two lines in the settings file (attached as text) in .config:

"torrent-complete-notification-enabled": true,
"torrent-complete-sound-command": "canberra-gtk-play -i complete-download -d 'transmission torrent downloaded'",

Can anyone point me in direction of substituting a sound it can play and how to write it in?
I have some sound themes in the usr/share/sounds folder (though don't know how to change sound themes yet) which presumably could be used.

I was going to post a picture of the desktop after I finished installing but I don't know how to do it here and when I read through the forum FAQ etc. I didn't pick up. Do you have clear instructions somewhere? Does it have to be such a clunky method of insertion?

Suggestion: in File Manager right click on the extracted directory (or file) and there should be a pull-down to install it right from there.
