  New WYSIWYG Editor
Posted by: valtam - 11-18-2014, 03:32 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (3)

Our WYSIWYG editor for quick reply decided it didn't want to work anymore so we are using a new one that is now fully integrated into the Forums. Only thing that does not seem to be working is the WYSIWYG Editor in pm's and custom signatures, no biggie, you can use this resource for a full list of BBCODES

  Install updates error
Posted by: maccool - 11-17-2014, 02:31 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (20)

Tried to run Install Updates from the menu. Has some sort of error message and that I was supposed to run some command line program. What I really got out of the message was that the window was going to close and it did before I could get down all the information on what it was suggesting I do.

Couldn't you make the window close on me hitting the enter key or something so I could take down the message.

So, what do I do now? Re-install the whole thing and pray?

Website is now using a CDN
Posted by: valtam - 11-17-2014, 09:32 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (6)

In an effort to make the entire LL website load faster, have better security and increase performance across the board we are now using Cloudfare as a CDN. Hopefully this will speed things up like the Forums which can be slow at times.

What is a CDN?

A content delivery network (CDN) is a system of distributed servers (network) that deliver webpages and other Web content to a user based on the geographic locations of the user, the origin of the webpage and a content delivery server.

In layman’s terms, a CDN is a server in a country that enables people in that country to access the website much faster than having to fetch it from where the website is actually hosted. With Cloudfare, there are servers all over the world thus giving people in all locations much better website performance. eg. if you live in France, there is a copy of this website in France now enabling much quicker loading times.

You'll also notice a new Search tool at the bottom of each page, this is mainly for the main LL site. I know this may seem superfluous on the forums as there is already a search function, but there is only a choice to enable it for the domain, not certain areas of a website.

Would like to hear if over the next week or so the Forums especially are working faster for you.

  Cloning drives
Posted by: ChrisL - 11-17-2014, 01:21 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (4)

I would like to clone my primary hard drive onto a larger drive (which I will then use as my primary).

I don't want to back-up so I can restore later.  Will Clonzilla clone in this manner a full working drive?

Looks like it, but ?? I am not totally convinced.  It also says "Boot loader, including grub (version 1 and version 2) and syslinux, could be reinstalled. " so maybe that would need to be done before the drive is fully functional? If so is that difficult to do?

If there is a better tool I am open to suggestions.  Thanks,
                                                                                                Chris

Tracking down the elusive lightdm-webkit-greeter bug
Posted by: valtam - 11-16-2014, 11:01 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (12)

Whilst making changes to the new login screen, I noticed in the /usr/share/lightdm-webkit/themes/linuxlite/index.theme file the following line was:

Code:
session=gnome

So I changed it to:

Code:
session=xfce4

and it seems to have done no harm. I've made this change on my main system as well as in VB.
I am hoping that this is the cause of the occasional time where you login and the webkit-greeter window appears and you have to close it.
If you'd like to jump on the 'test that theory bandwagon' please feel free and let me know how you get on Smile

Steam error, where to find cause?
Posted by: maccool - 11-16-2014, 06:28 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (2)

I am trying LL as a suitable travel game platform. I tried to install steam, when through the "install additional software", selected item 17 (steam), said yes to the steam installer prompt, then entered my password. The response I got was an error pop-up:

Error

Steam could not be installed.

There is no other information. So, where do I go to look for the info about why the install failed?

  Forum website issues
Posted by: maccool - 11-16-2014, 06:21 PM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - No Replies

Short list as a new user of both LLOS and the forum.

First the Welcome/login/register text at the top of the page is completely unreadable for me. That gray text on almost black and the funny blue on almost black just disappears. I had to do a browser "edit/select all" before I could actually see the link to a registry page.

2nd web forms should allow a person to table from field to field, every field. The country input selection of the new user registration was bypassed by a tab to it. Tsk, tsk. (I use the keyboard in preference to the mouse as I find it is faster and my fingers have less trouble getting confused if I stick to one device for input when I can).

Last, if you have particular requirements for an input field. they should be specified on the page. An example is the registration page password input, it really should specify password requirements.

Digital Camera Connection to Linux Lite
Posted by: elconguero - 11-16-2014, 12:52 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (3)

I am writing about something I came across which worried me.  Its to do with connecting a digital camera to Linux Lite.  Once the USB cable was connected from the digital camera to Linux Lite the pictures in the camera are viewable on the monitor to look at.  What I wasn’t aware of was that the pictures are automatically erased from the digital camera in the process.  So once I finished watching the pictures I then disconnected the camera from the PC as I wanted to leave the pictures in the cameras memory.  I was shocked to find that the pictures had been erased from the camera and as I had not saved the pictures that I looked on the monitor - these were lost as well.
I have since learned that when connecting a camera to Linux LIte you must immediately save these onto your PC - if not you have lost all those memories.  Is there a command that can be invoked to ensure that when a camera is connected that the pictures are not erased from the camera? Or that it asks if you want to transfer the pictures to the PC?
