When I click on 'Install Updates' in the Menu I get the following error message: 'couldn't fetch the package cache information lists'
Is there a way of fixing this?
When the above happens (which is always at the moment) I use the terminal instead and type:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgradeIs that sufficient, or do I need to have the command 'install' somewhere in that code?
Thanks for your help
Mike
I just finished installing my Canon image class MF 4570dw printer but am unable to get the two-sided printing feature to work. I go to Printer Properties -> Job Options -> Common Options -> Sides. From there I have the option of one-sided, two-sided long-edge, and two-sided short-edge. After I click either of the available two-sided options and choose "Apply", it immediately flips back to one-sided printing. Any idea on how to get the two-sided option to stick?
I'm brand new to Linux and am so glad to have come upon Linux Lite. This is REALLY nice!
I'm running Linux Lite 2.6 and for a while has not been able to fetch the file list, so, can update, any hints?
Hello gang,
Things have been very solid here for quite some time. But a problem that I had had before has cropped up again and I'd like to deal with it.
I use LibreOffice, and sometimes I will get larger files and reformat them. Typically I will do RegEx searches to find and replace blank lines and unwanted line endings.
Since Day One, Linux Lite 2.4 with its default LibreOffice would have problems doing this for files of any size - say, 1MB or more. CPU for LO will go to 50%, which doesn't seem too bad, but the display will partially freeze and the system will be largely or totally unusable.
Now I'm on LL 2.8 (x64, BTW) with LO 5.1.3 (x64 also), and the same thing is happening to a 1.7MB file. I split the file up into four files, and it did the same thing. So file size is only a minor factor.
This time I kept the files in .txt format, so I could work on them in gedit. To my surprise, the same system lockup is happening there as well, suggesting that this is a system problem. When I do this in gedit, the gedit process goes to 30% CPU, but another process called init goes to 35%, which is even worse than LO performed.
Any insight would be appreciated.
Hi dev folks,
I was wondering, what's being used to generate the various UI stuff needed by LL ?
There are a number of UI generators and graphical asset creators like Qt, Vadiin, and Sketch. Probably a lot of others that are good but that I don't know about. This is an area that I'm interested in learning more about.
Anyway, I wanted to see what's being used and which ones seem to be the most popular. It's one thing to go to a website and read their info but it's another thing to talk to developers directly about which ones are the most popular so that's why I wanted to ask here.
Are all of you working on UI's or is just Shaggy the main person who is doing this ?

P.S. liked the work that was done on the control panel, thought it was really nice !
Hi completely new to Linux Lite thus far loving its speed and simplicity although I run in to this problem

Any help
For several weeks I can not obtain updates. It stops at final phase when it should list available updates. Message is that it can not fetch the list of available updates.
I've got some data in spreadsheet format, from my own tinkering around, comparing LL to other ubuntu-based distros and MS windows OSes.
How do I insert the spreadsheet data into a forum posting?
Many thanks for any help.

Help!
I have a problem with GRUB loading…
on my ASUS 4211 Netbook. I've been using it without fault for a long time now, and ungraded to 2.8 a while back without problems.
On this accusation I had turned the unit on, and due to other things going on, I left it running for two days without any user interaction. All well ventilated etc. Then finally I decided to shut it down, via the menu and normal shut down selection. But before I did, I clicked on the task bar Software Updates Available, which I've set to daily checks. I normally go though the update process, entering password etc. but on this occasion, for the first time I decided to click on the Remind Me Later option.
When I turn on again, I now get the following on the screen,
alloc magic is broken at 0x43fff0: 10002312
Aborted. Press any key to exit.
Then after space bar press
Intel UNDI, PXE-2.1 (build 082)
For Realtek RTL8101E/8102E PCI-E Ethernet Controller v1.06 (080222)
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.
Boot Failure
Press any key to continue
Which after another space bar loops back to the alloc message again.
I see on the Web there are messages about GRUB bugs, but not sure how this may relate to Linux Lite. I also did a search on this site for alloc magic is broken, but not there.
Now I could do a fresh reinstall, with all the setting ups that are required, but then I'd loose some data files, which I'd prefer not to do.
Problem is I'm still a relative Linux novice, particularly at the low level stuff.
Is there a way I can get into the system, without destroying it?
Thanks in advance.
On my menu there are entries that I can't remove, because they doesn't appear on 'Main Menu editor'. So I want to check the stored file that the Main Menu editor uses.
TY.
