I've got some data in spreadsheet format, from my own tinkering around, comparing LL to other ubuntu-based distros and MS windows OSes.

How do I insert the spreadsheet data into a forum posting?

Many thanks for any help.
Mike

Help!

I have a problem with GRUB loading…
on my ASUS 4211 Netbook. I've been using it without fault for a long time now, and ungraded to 2.8 a while back without problems.

On this accusation I had turned the unit on, and due to other things going on, I left it running for two days without any user interaction. All well ventilated etc. Then finally I decided to shut it down, via the menu and normal shut down selection. But before I did, I clicked on the task bar Software Updates Available, which I've set to daily checks. I normally go though the update process, entering password etc. but on this occasion, for the first time I decided to click on the Remind Me Later option.

When I turn on again, I now get the following on the screen,

alloc magic is broken at 0x43fff0: 10002312
Aborted. Press any key to exit.
Then after space bar press
Intel UNDI, PXE-2.1 (build 082)
For Realtek RTL8101E/8102E PCI-E Ethernet Controller v1.06 (080222)
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.

Boot Failure
Press any key to continue

Which after another space bar loops back to the alloc message again.
I see on the Web there are messages about GRUB bugs, but not sure how this may relate to Linux Lite. I also did a search on this site for alloc magic is broken, but not there.

Now I could do a fresh reinstall, with all the setting ups that are required, but then I'd loose some data files, which I'd prefer not to do.

Problem is I'm still a relative Linux novice, particularly at the low level stuff.

Is there a way I can get into the system, without destroying it?

Thanks in advance.

On my menu there are entries that I can't remove, because they doesn't appear on 'Main Menu editor'. So I want to check the stored file that the Main Menu editor uses.

TY.

[size=1em]Following my experience of the somewhat amusing/intriguing 'wobbly windows' effect in Zorin OS, when I last used that OS a couple of years ago, I thought I'd try and reproduce the effect in LL2.8.
I've installed CompizConfig Settings Manager from Synaptic Package Manager, and have successfully installed the relevant compiz plugins by running the following command:[/size]

Code:
sudo apt-get install compiz compizconfig-settings-manager compiz-plugins

The 'wobbly windows' option in the CompizConfig Settings Manager has been ticked, together with the 'Composite' and 'OpenGL' options.
However, following more than one reboot, the wobbly windows effect doesn't seem to be activated.

Could it be that this effect is only compatible with a Gnome desktop (as in Zorin) and so therefore wont work with Linux Lite's XFCE?
As usual any help is much appreciated...
Cheers
Mike

The steps I have taken to do this worked, but the resolution of the loading splash screen are low. This is what I did:

Code:
sudo leafpad /etc/default/grub Look for the line : #GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 Just underneath write the line : GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=auto Then : sudo update-grub

This brings the splash screen back, but it is of course 640x480 (or so it appears). I have tried uncommenting the GRUB_GFXMODE and changing it to 1920x1080 (I am using an HD TV running at this resolution) but it does not change anything. The splash screen was perfect prior to installing the Nvidia driver, and then it was the generic "Ubuntu 14.04" screen. I tried the Lite Tweak for bootup fix and that changed it to a generic Linux Lite 2.8 screen with the loading dots. After the chnage I made above I made headway and actually have the splash screen with the feather but at low resolution.

Any ideas? I know it is not a big deal but it bugs me Smile Any help is appreciated!

Forum: Installing Linux Lite

Hi guys,

my first time on this forum.

After seeing a review of it on Youtube I thought I'd give Linux Lite 2.8 a try but I'm having some problems.

So far I've download the .iso file of Linux Lite 2.8 x32 (because in my old rig I can only install x32 OS's in Virtualbox). Tried to run (or install) Linux Lite inside the virutalbox but it doesn't even start the installation process. When I load the .iso file from virtualbox everything goes fine (you know, New machine, Amount of memory, etc.) until it gets to the starting (booting) screen of Linux Lite. When Linux Lite starts booting inside virtualbox there's a countdown going from ten to 1 but when it reaches one it just stops. I've tried this also inside Linux Mint 17.2 (running from an external HDD with virtualbox 4. ..something) the same thing.

I'm running openSUSE LEAP 42.1 (x64) as host OS.

Here's a picture of the screen when it hangs.

Some more info. As long as the countdown is running I can select all the options from the list provided (by moving with arrows) and also going into advanced options with tab but after the countdown hits one nothing works anymore.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Smile

I bought the Intel NUC NUC6i5SYH.  I got the following config:

16GB DDR4/2133 RAM
256GB NVME SSD
2TB Samsung Spinpoint HDD
It comes with Intel Iris 540 integrated graphics.

I need Windows for one application so I installed that on the SSD. The first hurdle was that the BIOS didn't like the NVME drive so I had to do a BIOS update (from within the BIOS).
The next hurdle was installing Windows, which also didn't like the NVME drive so I had to get a driver for that also.
After that, Windows was fairly painless and the NVME drive is very fast.

Then on to installing Linux on the HDD.  I was expecting problems as I had read online that the Iris 540 Graphics lacked drivers and GRUB was likely to cause issues also.
I was really expecting to have to install the latest short-term support version of Linux (15.10 at the time of writing) but I decided to try my latest Linux Lite DVD anyway (2.6, 64-bit).
Well, it installed and with no graphics issues - or any other issues as far as I can see.  Everything (including GRUB) worked first time.
This was BEFORE I had connected to the internet to download any updates or drivers.

This is excellent and I'm most impressed.  I was expecting big problems but had none at all.

Add to that the fact that Linux Lite comes ready to run in VMs (no need to download VirtualBox Guest Additions) and, for my purposes at least, it's by far the best Linux distro available.

Top stuff.

Edit: Forgot to mention no sound through headphones.  Easy fix found at (https://www-ssl.intel.com/content/www/us...05499.html):

1/ Add the following groups to your account: audio, pulse, pulse-access, video, and voice
2/ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/alsa-daily
3/ sudo apt update
4/ sudo apt install oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms
5/ reboot
