Installing Tor in Linux Lite 3.x Series
Posted by: valtam - 01-20-2017, 07:49 AM - Forum: Tutorials - Replies (2)

What is Tor?

Tor is free software and an open network that helps you defend against traffic analysis, a form of network surveillance that threatens personal freedom and privacy, confidential business activities and relationships, and state security. Tor protects you by bouncing your communications around a distributed network of relays run by volunteers all around the world: it prevents somebody watching your Internet connection from learning what sites you visit, and it prevents the sites you visit from learning your physical location.

This installs the Tor service, not to be confused with the Tor Web Browser. The Tor Web Browser is a quick and easy way to browse the Internet safely, the Tor service installs directly to your system, allowing you to run a variety of applications through the Tor network. See - https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor...icprograms for how to run programs through Tor.

Edit your sources list:

Code:
sudo leafpad /etc/apt/sources.list

Add the following to the bottom of the file, save and close:

Code:
deb http://deb.torproject.org/torproject.org xenial main
deb-src http://deb.torproject.org/torproject.org xenial main

Open a terminal, run the following 2 commands separately:

Code:
gpg --keyserver keys.gnupg.net --recv A3C4F0F979CAA22CDBA8F512EE8CBC9E886DDD89

Code:
gpg --export A3C4F0F979CAA22CDBA8F512EE8CBC9E886DDD89 | sudo apt-key add -

Update and install:

Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install tor deb.torproject.org-keyring

Check the service is running:

Code:
ps aux | grep /tor

Your output should be similar to:

Code:
jerry@z800:~$ ps aux | grep /tor
debian-+  3835  0.1  0.2  81756 36032 ?        Ss   20:20   0:01 /usr/bin/tor --defaults-torrc /usr/share/tor/tor-service-defaults-torrc -f /etc/tor/torrc --RunAsDaemon 0
jerry    11132  0.0  0.0  14224  1004 pts/2    S+   20:36   0:00 grep /tor
jerry@z800:~$

Open Firefox (other browsers instructions will be similar)

Open menu Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Network > Settings.
Select Manual proxy configuration.
Enter SOCKS Host: 127.0.0.1 and Port: 9050 and select SOCKS v5 and clear all text in No proxy for: text box.
Press OK.

In Firefox:

about:config

Search for:

remote_dns

double click 'network.proxy.socks_remote_dns' and change to 'true'.

Done.

  Tutorial - removing gpg keys
Posted by: bitsnpcs - 01-19-2017, 11:52 PM - Forum: Tutorials - No Replies

Hello,
I recently tested a software named Dukto, I uninstalled (total uninstall option) using Install/Remove Software (Synaptic).
When reading my updates log after removal I noticed updates to the keys of the uninstalled program, as the keys remained.
In this link Nitin Venkatesh answered a question about key removal, that I wished to share as it may save someone time searching it out.

To find the keys -

Code:
sudo apt-key list

Reading down the results I found the key for the project creator, 8 characters.

Code:
sudo apt-key del

After the word del 1 space then paste the 8 characters

Repeating
Code:
sudo apt-key list

Shows the key is removed.

Upgrade from Linux Lite 3.0 to 3.2
Posted by: hughparker1 - 01-19-2017, 09:26 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (3)

I have a multi-boot setup on an old DELL Vostro 1520 (BIOS setup) with Linux Lite 3.0 in charge of grub, which works well.

I would like to upgrade from 3.0 to 3.2 but have a couple of questions before I do this...

I read on the Release Announcement page that the Lite Upgrade won't do: New Grub config (potential to ruin peoples existing multi-boot setups)

Does this mean that if the upgraded Linux Lite is NOT in charge of grub menu it won't boot?  (so same behavior as 3.0)

Would I need to do a fresh install of 3.2 to get the NEW  multi boot with other distros functionality?

I'm guessing fresh install is the answer but I'm not entirely sure so any advice would be appreciated.

  Kodi sound settings
Posted by: bitsnpcs - 01-19-2017, 01:22 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (8)

Hello,
I installed Kodi from Lite Software.
I made one change so far, I added from the options, Sveriges Radio.
Top right of Kodi I have a red sound icon, the stations of Sveriges Radio I have tried are playing but without any sound.
I have looked at the Kodi setting panel under audio, there does not seem to be any muted.

Update - I have uninstalled Kodi for now.
I can wait until Kodi release a new version and then try.

  corrupted file in firefox
Posted by: tomt - 01-18-2017, 11:54 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (10)

Not being an IT specialist and having only been using Linux for 5 yrs. I`ve not been able to solve an anomaly with Firefox. I use Sophos-av and no matter what O/S I download including LL Firefox is shown with a corrupted file unless I do not install or sign in.This shows up in Arch, Antergos, Manjaro, Mint, LL, peppermint and any of the Ubuntu flavors with one exception, Ubuntu 16.04.1. I have uninstalled Firefox in LL and the file remains. I double checked with clam a-v on a couple of O/S s and it shows a Trojan in Firefox. Signed in to Ubuntu LTS with exact same sign for Firefox with the exact same apps and no corrupted file. I had been using opera and chrome along with Firefox and I can only assume the problem must be in my Firefox when I log in except it is not in Ubuntu. To reproduce the problem simply download free sophos, install and run scan. Others may have the file also and not even know it is there.

Sending pictures from Shotwell by email
Posted by: Richard B - 01-18-2017, 08:35 PM - Forum: Installing Software - No Replies

I have just started using Shotwell for image management and basic editing and like it. However, I found that trying to send pictures by email (single or selected, edited or original) directly from it failed. Google took me to ubuntuforums.org message 2058352 where Edward Comer says that
[/size]

Quote:
[/size]Shotwell depends on nautilus-sendto (in an executable path) to function, which is missing in a pure XFCE installation.
[/size]

[/size]Edward offers a script to re-direct the action but I had problems with file permissions and tried using a simlink instead, thus:
[/size]
Code:
cd /usr/local/bin

[/size]
Code:
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/Thunar/thunar-sendto-email nautilus-sendto

[/size]This works. The destination of the symlink was found from /usr/share/Thunar/sendto/thunar-sendto-email.desktop and will be different for 32bit Linux. I used a symlink (-s option) rather than a hard link to reduce the possibility of problems with software upgrades.
[/size]The symlink diverts anything intended for nautilus-sendto to thunar-sendto-email
[/size]
[/size]Apologies for the /size insertions which I don't seem able to disable.
[/size]

Error while installing updates on Linux Lite 3.2
Posted by: Mr A - 01-18-2017, 07:52 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (10)

Hi all,
I'm pretty new to Linux and just installed Linux Lite 3.2

Just tried to do a sudo apt-get update from terminal and i do get an error message:

Is that normal?

Someone suggested to ping 91.189.92.152 which seems to work...

Apologies if it's a stupid question, but I am pretty new to Linux so not sure how to solve it.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide
