  Skype for Linux 8.5 Preview
Posted by: valtam - 08-31-2017, 08:37 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (3)

Dear Skype only users,

Should this new preview version replace version 5.4 in our repos or should we be patient and wait for the Final?

Questions about Lite, mainly Ubuntu privacy oriented
Posted by: newtolight - 08-30-2017, 10:12 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (17)

Hello.

I'm quite new to using Linux and have some experience with Ubuntu, Mint and Manjaro so far.

I'm not an IT person, just a normal user who knows how to install (via simple graphical installer) and daily use an operating system for basic tasks: Internet, playing multimedia files, editing documents, some games etc. So I would appreciate answers not relying on heavy technical jargon, thanks.

My questions are:

1. How different is LL (Linux Lite) from Ubuntu and how different is it from other Ubuntu-based distros? Is it just “Ubuntu with a different wallpaper”, like someone said in a review about many small Ubuntu-based distros?

Of course, I realize that the LL team have done a great job of easing the transition from Windows to many newcomers, especially with a good, informative guide and the nice “Lite Software” interface.  But is there more to LL? Does LL audit something in the general code or improve upon it somehow?

2. Somewhat related to the previous question:
Ubuntu was known for gathering some user data in the past (the Amazon search present in Unity). Now, I understand that the data gathering was “anonymous” (or so they say…) and limited to Unity desktop (Really – how do we know?!?)

One one hand, Ubuntu users cannot be certain that Ubuntu does not contain more data surveillance code hidden inside its general code, can they?…

On the other hand, Ubuntu did make the Linux desktop easier and more friendly to use and thus it set a model to follow for many other distros and that helped the free open source world in general…

So I am divided here (am I the only one thinking like this?): It seems Ubuntu has done both good and harm. What is your position on this? How does LL ensure that the Ubuntu code they receive from the Ubuntu source is forwarded to the LL users in a safer way?…

3. Does anyone know of a simple, non-root way of mounting an .iso file? I know of AcetoneIso and Furiusiso, but they seem to install quite many extras with them. I will probably use one of them as a last resort, but I was searching for something simpler (for example, in Manjaro one can mount an .iso by right click mouse)

Thank you.

  Note taking application
Posted by: ayanb - 08-30-2017, 09:53 AM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - Replies (7)

Hi, Lite Softwares provided with LL seems to very cool and useful. Can we have a default note taking app as a new 'Lite Software'. I think it's very essential for work and productivity.
Thanks.

  ssh on localhost
Posted by: wesley - 08-30-2017, 01:27 AM - Forum: Network - Replies (1)

hello linux lt on all machines
i have three home pc s on my net work and i am trying to learn in bash so i have been playing with ssh. all my machines have ssh and ssh  opensshd-sever. and i was able to ssh # 102 to #107 and vice versa. but now only #102 ssh 's  to 107 . connect timed out port 22.    however both machines have ufw  turn to OFF
i have know a lot of commands but i dont know all the terminology so i get lost in some of the explanations and tutorial that i have used. is there a direct way to allow or not allow ports to be seen or set in terminal or gui  ............. netstat and its other similar commands are not clear to me
i only am using this to learn in terminal and not for work or anything important . i log as w**@machinename like this w**@desktop:~$          w**@laptop:~$  w**@htpc:~$          and on localhost my router so do i need a user name@ or just ssh ip address. ?

nano is not working for me on 102 if i grep listen config page blank and a purge or reinstall i dont think fixes problem b/c it doesnt redo lists as it needs too .

i like linux and never go bac to wnds. sorry for the poor note and grammar from the deep wet south

How to get rid of "sessions"?
Posted by: JanetBiggar - 08-28-2017, 07:42 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (3)

At some point I hopefully will run out of questions!

On one of the five donated laptops/notebooks on which I have loaded LL 3.4 I inadvertently enabled "this" (see photo). Now each time I boot up the computer and go into my administrator user (I have also set up a second user) I get this message. I am trying to upload a photo, but in case it doesn't show up it is a white box in the middle of my screen that says:
                                                DEFAULT
                                                Last accessed: Sat Aug 12 11:28:24 2017

                                                Log Out                      New Session

I believe I double click on the session (Sat Aug...) which then is allowing me to continue and it goes away.

I tried going into the lite tweaks and going into manage sessions and disabling it for all users, however it is still popping up.  I'm not sure how to get rid of this happening and I forget what I did initially (it wasn't via the lite tweak) that I turned this on...

Any easy fixes?

Can I Name (or now ideally RE-name) a restore point in LL?
Posted by: JanetBiggar - 08-28-2017, 12:59 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (4)

I have been used to being able to title a restore point rather than just having a date in Win XP and Win 7 such that I have a better idea of what I backed up e.g. "Before adding ____".

Is naming or re-naming a restore point something I can do in LL 3.4?  I've tried changing the title by double clicking in the date field and it will allow me to type stuff in, however once I exit then go back to the restore window it is back to the date only...

If yes, might someone be able to provide me with detailed instructions? I can't seem to find anything about this specific subject when I search.

Thanks in advance.

Linux Computers: are these made differently compared to Windows OS machines?
Posted by: m654321 - 08-28-2017, 12:07 PM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (1)

Some manufacturers (e.g. Dell & some others) make  computers for the Linux market.  These manufacturers appear to be few and far between and their products tend to cost significantly more than the majority of  machines which are mostly made for the Windows OS market.

Are modern computers, which are sold as "Linux computers",  merely  Windows OS machines with Linux installed on them, with the token penguin sticker applied to the Windows key?

Or are they built differently, being configured specifically for Linux operating systems?
Are any of them  BIOS-only machines, or have they fully embraced Microsoft's obsession with putting UEFI on all new machines?

Interested to hear your replies...

Cheers
Mike
