Hi all, I am trying to figure out how to update my bios in my Dell XPS 1210. I am surprised there is no automatic program that I can find that does this. Is there one I'm missing. I am a neophyte?

The other day, while using LL3.6, I needed to convert a *.png image file to an *.jpg one, before I could upload it to a website. I found the solution and thought I would share it with you - it's dead easy, which is what I like ...  Wink

It works in the terminal, through the imagemagick application (which is pre-installed on LL3.6), as far as I'm aware.

1. Open terminal
2. Type:

Code:
convert image.png image.jpg
... where "image" is the name of your image file

However, you will need to indicate where image.png is located.  For example, if it is in 'Downloads' folder, then type:
Code:
convert /home/[username]/Downloads/image.png image.jpg
It will then leave an image.jpg version of the file in 'Downloads', alongside the image.png one.

Other information:
  • it will keep the original file you started with, i.e. it won't be deleted during conversion
  • other image file types can be converted (e.g. *.gif, *.bmp, *.tif), and in any direction, e.g. bmp to jpg or jpg to bmp, etc
  • for batch files (those which contain commands), replace convert with mogrify
  • the convert command can be used to rotate or resize images - for further details see https://www.lifewire.com/convert-linux-c...nd-4097060

Being recently retired, my pension is a bit short for paying the bills...  :'(

I thought maybe I could capitalise on the knowledge I've gained about Linux, over the last 3 years, and earn myself a bob/buck or two.
I'm no expert, but in general I now appear to be able to convert a range of different PCs from Windows to Linux (old and modern) relatively easily.

What I wanted to know was whether it's legal to use Linux's open-source materials (e.g. the Linux Lite logo) on business cards or adverts for my
own meagre profit?

Many thanks in advance for your replies
Mike

After making new partitions and mounting them I restarted and was brought to the emergency mode screen, but it wouldn't accept my password. I assume it need my super user password? Why wouldn't work?

I would like to recover my info and all my work, but if it's a lost cause I'd like to know how I can install the newest version of Linux Lite if I already has Lite 3.0 installed. I tried using a usb stick with 3.6 burned on it but I get the 3.0 screen and no option to install 3.6.

Linux is the only OS installed in my machine and I'm Currently using Puppy Linux to solve this problem. Thanks for any help.

I want to e-mail a friend with a Screenshot attachment showing what LL looks like when the Menu is open, i.e. showing the list of the applications.

However after opening the Menu, when I click on Screenshot the Menu closes... ???
How can I keep it open so that I can screenshot its contents, like you see in many places in the Help Manual?

Thanks in advance for any help with this..

HP Desktop dc7700p 4GB Ram LL3.4 64bit up to date wired LAN to router.  While deleting a large folder in an external usb drive, the desktop froze with much Desktop drive activity.  a box appeared  stating writing to external  hard drive please do not switch off.  The external usb drive (1 TB) was about half full.
After a couple of hours the Desktop was still frozen and its hard drive was still active.
So foolishly i decided to switch off via the on/off button.

RESULT, The EXternal Hard drive appears to be unaffected, the large folder having been removed.  HOWEVER The Hard Drive on the desktop has been left with a very basic presence of linuxlite ( No feather, no xcfe menu  etc. All folders  ( desktop, documents, downloads etc) are empty and  the contents appear to have been deleted.  NO thunderbird, etc.  The Desktop drive now shows  circa 130 GB free as to 30GB free beforehand.

It would appear therefore that all that has been deleted??  However the user name for the desktop still shows.

The question therefore, A) How did this happen? and B) Is the  original data still on that drive somehow but not "registered"  . I know this might be wishful thinking on my part, but loaqthe to reset the drive if there is any possibility of recovering.

AS it is a few months since I backed up, there is a lot od recent data that it looks as if I may have lost - very embarrassing to say the least!!

Hope the above account makes some sense.  Not in the best frame of mind at the moment as you may appreciate Sad

Thoughts appreciated.  Thanks
Written from another PC

Update. Gpart states no recoverable files found.

Heya!

I have some older machines using Linux Lite 2.x and would like to make the icon texts on the desktop centered instead of left-aligned. I tried a few things wihout success but the XFCE control panel has so many options I'm confused.

How can I make the LL 2.x desktop icons show up like they do in LL 3.x ?

Cheers!

Hi folks -- I'm still in LL 3.4, and have been having trouble getting through the Install Updates process. I've even tried these steps from another thread:

Code:
sudo apt-get clean sudo apt autoremove -y sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Here's my Install Updates error log:

Hi - I'm very new to Linux, so please excuse any obvious mistakes.

I have successfully paired a wireless keyboard to Linux Lite on a fairly old Dell desktop PC. I can see signals being transmitted between the PC and the keyboard via a moving band and a numerical counter, but cannot work out how to switch the OS to actually use this keyboard. The only keyboard recognised is the wired one I used for setup. I have tried the obvious things like rebooting, removing the wired keyboard used to set up the wireless connection, and using different USB ports, but can't solve it. I've also looked for similar issues in this forum. Any help much appreciated.
