Understandably, we're all a bit concerned about the announcement that systemback, that wonderfully user-friendly back-up tool, will no longer be supported in future - a great shame. Unfortunately, I don't have the skills and know-how to help in that area for it's continuation (not in a million years!)  :'(

So, like you, I'm wondering what to use in the future instead of systemback, though I'm sure Jerry will come up with something.  In light of this, I heard about a tool called rsync in the Manjaro forum, and I use it on setups3&4 (in signature). Rsync is a terminal-based tool (it seems to back up much faster than the GUI-based dejadup): the good news is that it's installed by default in LL3.6  Wink

There is a GUI-based version of rsync called grsync, also available to install from the Ubuntu repository (see Install Updates in LL menu).
Just a thought for the LL developers:  could grsync replace systemback in future LL upgrades, with explanatory notes on its use incorporated into the LL Help Manual ?

Without guidance notes on how to use grsync, I therefore found the terminal-based rsync easier to use, after I got some help on the Manjaro forum community, and would like to share this with you guys.

To use rsync, you need to do the following:

1. Create a back-up folder, e.g. let's call it Backup, and we'll put it at home/mike/
[substitute 'mike' for your user name; the the name of the back-up folder & where you put it is entirely your choice]

2. Now when  backing-up, certain exclusions will be made: you don't want to include everything, otherwise the back-up file will be cumbersome
[e.g. it's assumed that your directories (Documents, Downloads, Pictures, etc) will be backed-up elsewhere such as to an external drive]

To back-up, open terminal and copy & paste this:

Code:
sudo rsync -aAXv  --exclude={"/dev/*","/proc/*","/sys/*","/tmp/*","/run/*","/mnt/*","/media/*","/lost+found"} /home/mike/Backup/

My first rsync backup, took up around 9.2GB, compared to 7.6GB for deja-dup. Future backups just add anything new since the last backup, so are quicker to complete.

To restore from the folder Backup, created at /home/mike/ , copy & paste this:
Code:
sudo rsync -aAXv  --delete={"/dev/*","/proc/*","/sys/*","/tmp/*","/run/*","/mnt/*","/media/*","/lost+found"} /home/mike/Backup/

I'll be quite honest that a significant amount of the  command-line I use is often beyond my comprehension. My motto is: "if it works, use it", and along the way I find my understanding grows a little bit more over time.  I know the terminal doesn't suit everyone, but for those who are happy to use it, then I hope this is useful.

Mike

PS. Please let me know if I've made any typos in the command-line & I'll go back and correct these.

For those of you who studied chemistry at secondary school / high-school, the link below (entitled "Periodic Table of Linux Distros") will no doubt make you smile...

https://distrowatch.com/images/other/per...distro.png

It's actually very clever. Like with the Periodic Table of The Elements, which organizes elements into groups according to their electron configurations and chemical properties, the one for distros also attempts to organize into families with common characteristics.

So for your chemistry homework tonight, please locate Linux Lite and list its properties ...  ;D

I was recently blind sided by an advertisement from WalMart, while on MY personal wifi at HOME surfing Ebay. SO I was wondering about wiping its brain and Installing Linux Lite, or a Puppy linux.
Any suggestions other? lower than .45 or 40 ACP?

Here lxterminal is transparent and fullscreen running a few figlets and screenfetch. Conky is transparent as well using the 'above' hint with a few more options added.

Hi All:
I'm litewait and new to forum, but not LL, actually started that journey w/ 2.6. updates have always been a little buggy.  I have LL 3.4 on 5-10 machines, most very old HPs. I'm NOT comfortable using the terminal, guess that makes me goooey?
one of my desktops spit this back today it seems criptic but obviously not deadly. have encountered dpkg issues before... usually go away with a fresh install.  NEVER EVER discard your OS Disc DVD!!! AND keep your files on a thumb drive. This particular desktop is an ancient Dell===========================

In the past week, both of my computers running LL 3.6 64bit have gotten darker displays.  I checked with a friend running the same version, and he noticed the same thing.  We have Intel based integrated graphics cards.

Again, it's a recent thing I noticed since about the middle of last week.  It could be updates related.  I wondered if anyone else noticed the same thing.

Hi everyone,

New Linux Lite user here. I have to say I am very impressed by how easy it has become to switch to Linux from Windows. Last time I tried was 15 years ago and I abandoned that pretty quickly after driver issues drove me nuts. This time around it was a breeze.
Anyway, I have installed Linux Lite on an old Acer Aspire laptop that I want to use as a HTPC. I installed Kodi 17.4 on it, and ran into serious crashing issues when using some plugins that stream content from the web (Youtube and Nederland24 plugins). This was fairly frustrating, since it seemed to happen only on the second time I opened Kodi after install. I could delete the .kodi folder and reinstall and everything was fine again, but the next time crashes started occurring again. After some searching, I found this thread (ignore the frustrated user vs developer fight), which pointed to this bug in Ubuntu 16.04, which has been solved in a later version. Updating the python cryptography and openssl packages to the Zesty versions, as suggested in the linked Kodi forum thread, solved the problems for me.
I have no idea how your policy is on matters like this, but since this seems to be a recognized bug in Ubuntu 16.04, would it be an idea to include these package updates in the automatic Linux Lite updates?

I've kept lite on three of my home machines (two laptops and a desktop) for three years now.  The laptops are dual boot win7 (survived the win10 onslaught)/lite and the desktop as lite/test linux os.  I'm still the point and click mouse input fellow, so no screen touch scrolling for me.  As having tried many other linux os's offered in distrowatch, I have not found one that offers the best balance between software bloat/minimalism with out of the box elegance that lite provides.  Keep it up!
