Hardware Database issue

The above mentioned is on the fritz. The page itself is fine, just some backend stuff that has even one of my paid devs stumped. People's hardware configurations are still being uploaded, they're just not getting injected into the database. So when it is fully operational again I'll let you know. In the meantime, your hardware configs will sit in the queue waiting for some dev magic to happen.

Any modern Motherboards without UEFI & Secure boot technology built into them?

I think at least some of us, here on the LL forums, would agree that UEFI (and Secure Boot) is a needless and complicated technology that has been forced on consumers buying modern computers.
At home we have 4 laptops: three older BIOS-only laptops and one more modern gaming laptop that has UEFI & Secure Boot technology - an Asus G750JS. See all setups 1 to 4 in signature).
All the BIOS-only laptops work excellently: they appear very stable & trouble-free. This is the case with either a Linux single-boot set-up or with a Linux/Windows dual- or triple-boot one. My favourite laptop is a 10 year old Dell Lattitude D630 (see setup4 in sig), which I bought 2 years ago for £70 on Amazon - excellent value for money.
In contrast, our most troublesome machine is an Asus G750JS UEFI laptop, which came preinstalled with Win8.1 - it cost a small fortune at £1200 ...
What did I get for the money? Well, a machine that's limited to only running smoothly with a Windows OS single-boot system (either 8.1 or 10; Win7 wont work at all in UEFI and crashes in Legacy) - that's basically it.
When Windows is dual-booted with Linux on our Asus G750JS (i.e. with those distros having a UEFI support package), the system will periodically crash, which is extremely frustrating, not to mention the work that's lost. Even with a Linux single-boot UEFI setup, I can get stability issues. Following such a crash, I'll go to the laptop's boot settings: often I find that the Boot Device List has been mysteriously wiped, i.e. there is nothing listed to boot from ! I also have stability issues when I run in Legacy/CSM on this machine.
From the above experiences, you can understand why I find the use of UEFI / Secure Boot technology in modern Motherboards to be both burdensome and unnecessary. Are there Motherboard brands (good enough for gaming) that are supplied without this technology? If there are, I'm quite tempted one day to build my own PC Tower and call it a UEFI-and-Secure-Boot-free-zone - oh what bliss ...!
Looking forward to reading any of your views, experiences on this, etc ...
Mike

I also believe that hootsuite got an Gpl but not very clear on that... but it works what I need till I found something with FSF stamp on it. It really surprise me how many businesses don't have an twitter or Facebook or even an Mastdon account.

I have an old Dell optiplex 320 which I have intsalled LL on for friend. I had Deb 9 on it for a while and was able to deal with its quirks. It apparently only alows a pre-boot resolution of 640X480 which is fine for the grub menu though in Linux Lite it curiously displays a Deb 8 splash. I'll hide grub anyway before I give it to my friend. I have not worked with plymouth much in LL other than to change the boot splash on a few systems. On this ati card the boot splash does not display correctly even from live cd in LL or Ubuntu LTS. I could change this in Deb 9 by enabling the old black screen text with three boxes basic splash. Can I script for Lite boot to display at 640X480. I realize it's coded for best resolution seeking but this old card will not allow the splash to display at anything but a fixed 640X480 resolution. The lightdm splash displays fine at 1280X1024 as does the booted LL system so the card and the plymouth script serve their intended purpose. As this computer is intended for an inexperienced user I need to correct the splash problem in pre-boot. The plain black three box splash worked for Deb 9 but I know it's not the same as the one in LL. Also I have yet to figure out changing plymouth themes in LL. Will my Deb 9 scripts work?
Addition: As I suspected normal Debian commands and scripts don't work. The new question is: If I remove plymouth-themes altogether will the system still boot and display the lightdm splash and login after loading? I can't send a computer out of my shop with the globbed up mess this machine is making of the plymouth boot splash. I wouldn't be resorting to scripting if I hadn't tried every other alternative. I did resolve the mysterious Deb 8 grub menu splash to a nice gray now.
TC
sorry for the long question

Lite User Manager

The Lite User Manager works well and is generally safe for the LL system. The caveats are of course there to protect your Linux Lite system, and allow multiple users to have separate home directories, and while I don't recommend changing user names some LL users may find themselves wanting to. Choosing a user name at installation time can be a heady even deeply emotional thing for new users, and they may find themselves regretting their choice afterwards. The link below offers a decent explanation of the process for changing a user name in Linux.
https://linuxacademy.com/howtoguides/pos...t-username
I would add to run top from the terminal for PID numbers, and to remember that the longer the system has been installed and the more applications that have been added, the more scripts there are likely to have to be edited after a user name change. Many scripts you won't find until you have a user permission problem with them. Be prepared to be annoyed if you have been using your system for some time. User name changes can be made, but because it goes deep into the core of your Linux system you will run into difficulties afterwards. Best advice: use your first name for a user name during install. You're less likely to regret it afterwards unless of course you hate yourself. In the case of a new system where perhaps you have misspelled your user name, it may be faster for you to reinstall and certainly less technical if you are unfamiliar with Linux. In LL as with all systemd systems you will need to create the temporary user to attempt the user name change.
good luck

Hi all,
just a quick hello from me, new here. I hope everyone is feeling well and not too stressed.
I've been drawn to the idea of Linux os a while now, and have had limited success with a couple of distros. Here's hoping for better with Lite. (see my post in installation problems).
I really don't like Windows, the ethos (a single person taking tens of billions of dollars from others!!), the spyware etc. Also we are expected to consign perfectly good computers to landfill (aka "re-cycling") when Linux can give them a new life.
I was interested in Jerry's post where he referred to having encountered arrogant and eletist programmers, and that rang some bells too, such people are not confined to the world of computers.
Whether I succeed in becoming a Lite person or not, I wish you all well with this good project.

Absent wifi on live usb

Hi all,
this is my first post, from a me in search of a good Linux os, after a couple of nice but unreliable Linux OSs.
I have successfully downloaded Lite to a usb and re-booted to live usb. I had matched the checksum ok. (my intention is for a dual boot with windows 7, without mounting windows partition).
I did not proceed with install because my internet connection (phone hotspot over wifi) is not there. No networks are visible. Yet when I re-boot to Windows 7 it is automatically back online in 10 seconds, as usual. I went back to live usb and re-set my phone to connect by Bluetooth, the latter utility appears to be working on Lite, the icon is there on the panel. Several attempts at pairing or even detecting device failed.
I went to Dell site and downloaded wifi driver for my Latitude E5420, i5, 4gb, and opened/extracted it within Lite-usb, but honestly I've no idea how to install it. I didn't see any .exe file, which is not to say it's not there somewhere!
I am a reasonably competent person, I hope, but I'm not a programmer, not interested in tinkering, I get more than enough complexity elsewhere in my life and am just about happy enough to copy and paste a suggested command line. I am probably Lite's target audience, but I wish the install was easier, or even possible at this stage.
A few days ago I did successfully install Zorin Ultimate from live usb, and that usb live boot-up got online automatically right away each time. (Zorin worked very nicely for a couple of days but has crashed and locked me out in the rain! Hence I still search for a reliable linux).
I bought this laptop from a major supplier as a refurbish with Win 7 installed, but I had a long and tedious manual download and installing of lots of drivers to get it working fully. I'm not willing to go through that again. I did look up the Lite hardware database and did find one other person with Lite 3x installed on same model pc as mine.
Anyway, I'd appreciate any advice.
