Using a different user rather than admin
Posted by: JanetBiggar - 10-26-2017, 04:23 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (3)

Hello,
I have posted earlier as I’m using Linux lite 3.4 on older computers that I place with South Africa high school youth for study. I’m now in SA and placing two today with youth and my question is:

1) Is there an advantage to having them use their computers via a second user whereby they DO NOT have admin access? I had heard that on windows computers it was best not to use the computers on a daily basis as “admin” which I believe is something to do with security as well as preventing downloading...

2) IF I change the second user to having admin permission or providing them with the admin password when required for things - is this any different or safer than simply having them use the computer via admin user.

Hope these questions make sense!

Regards,
Janet

Hola [member=7131]RjveraL[/member]

Code:
sudo nano /usr/share/applications/defaults.list

Smile

Background image when starting "the feather"
Posted by: trinidad - 10-25-2017, 02:29 PM - Forum: Desktop Customization - Replies (15)

This post belongs in desktop customization. I have continued it here.

There are four splashes. Grub boot splash, plymouth splash, lightdm splash, and desktop background splash. Below are their locations.

/boot/grub_linux_lite.png
/usr/share/plymouth/themes/liteboot/background.png (the feather is logo.png)
Your desktop and lightdm backgrounds can be stored in /usr/share/backgrounds/xfce  You can put your files there for them and use the GUI to select different backgrounds for them there.
If you want to change plymouth let me know as it requires a more specific method.

Linux Lite 3.6 64bit ISO with Language Support Test
Posted by: valtam - 10-25-2017, 09:48 AM - Forum: Linux Lite Software Development - Replies (18)

Hi everyone,

Languages are getting a lot of love lately  :-*

As previously stated, I'm starting to do some early work on Series 4.x
As the title states, I've created a Linux Lite 3.6 64bit (only) ISO with Language Support. I'd like some volunteers to install this in their native language.

- Select your Language at the start of the install.
- If it isn't already selected on the map slide of the installer, please make sure you select your correct Timezone/City. This will ensure that on the next slide, your correct language is selected and installed.

Because this installs your correct language during install, the install will take anywhere from 5 to 20 mins longer than our standard installer, depending on your system specs. This is because it needs to download all the additional language packs for your language. After a reboot for example, Gimp should be in your native language.

Once you've booted for the first time after the install, you'll be faced with a dialogue window that will ask if you want to change your folder names too, please do this.
There will of course be some Menu items that are not translated, Linux Lite applications, the My Computer sub menu, etc. Most of your system should be in your native language.

This is for non-UEFI and Secure boot systems. You can if you like, install in a VM, but I would prefer real hardware.

Download - http://repo.linuxliteos.com/isotests/lin...-64bit.iso

Filename: linux-lite-3.6-languages-64bit.iso
Size: 1.1Gb
MD5SUM: 41df4c6d4ddc06f2127f7def63455b24

The Grub Live boot menu is very basic (text only). This is deliberate, as I'm avoiding pouring dozens of hours into something that might not work for everyone.

You will see the word 'Ubuntu' instead of 'Linux' or 'Linux Lite' on the installer, just ignore this. The installer slides have not been translated.
Should you need it, the live login user is: ubuntu, no password required.

Thank you, and please let me know how you get on. Smile

Background image when starting "the feather"
Posted by: clunga - 10-25-2017, 07:40 AM - Forum: Start up and Shutdown - Replies (1)

I understand it sound as a silly question, ;D ;D but I love to personalize my distros. In ubuntu or in Mint, I can set up a starting image when booting which is used as a background. Following the booting configuration /boot/grub/grub.cfg which states

nsmod png
background_image -m stretch /boot/grub_linux_lite.png
if [ "${recordfail}" = 1 ] ; then
  set timeout=30

and further on
[color=red]insmod png
if background_image /boot/grub_linux_lite.png;

I replaced the _linux_lite.png in the /boot folder, using the same dimensions and an extension .png, with an image of my choice.
Now, what I would like to do is to replace the "feather" image, that in Ubuntu approach, should be a background.png placed somewhere.
Thanks for your help

Web pages audio streaming no sound
Posted by: clunga - 10-25-2017, 07:09 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (3)

Hi to everybody and thanks for your attention.
I have this problem, whilst I can listen to YouTube sound, if I go to a web page streaming , I hear no sound, notwithstanding the proper settings. In radiotunes pages it even appears a notice stating: blocked.
My fault or there is a way around? Thanks for your assistance.

Can you help to keep a mirror alive?
Posted by: ralphy - 10-25-2017, 05:18 AM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (3)

Hi all,

I've created a GoFundMe campaign asking fellows to help me keep a Linux mirror alive. The servers are only 5 days away from being shutdown, so I wanted to post and make others aware. I'm asking for financial help and asking for money is hard. I don't feel comfortable doing so. Please, if you can contribute just do. And if you can't it is fine too. I'm quoting the GoFundMe post below:

I love open source software and for the last two years I've ran Linux mirrors to support Linux Mint and Linux Lite more recently.  After little over over two years of running these services, I find myself in a situation where I cannot afford to pay the bill for the seven (7) servers I rent to distribute packages for the masses, hence I've decided to open this campaign to keep the services alive (hopefully with your kind donation) while I get back on my feet. I live in South Florida and we were recently impacted by Irma. Personal finances, medical bills and life in general have me in a position where I cannot simply pay the bill as usual this month.

The Anycast mirror servers can be found at http://mirror.unlockforus.com; they were first launched on September 2, 2015. They will continue to run until the end of this month which is when payment will be due.

I do not want to let the mirror die. I have put time, efforts and money into making sure the mirror is there for the benefit of many for the last two years. If you are a Linux supporter, I kindly ask you to help out to keep it alive.

I'm a single individual and I do not represent any of these two open source Linux distributions.  100% of the donations received will be dedicated to pay for the servers. I just need a little help to make that happen because I'm in a tough financial position right now.

All the best!
