Hello,

I wanted to install Fedora-Workstation-26 in VB to follow the Linux Bible book as it uses Fedora, or Red Hat Enterprise, also Ubuntu Gnome to a lesser degree, plus it is changing.
It left Fedora as the free option.
Also I wanted to see and try the Gnome desktop.
I had difficulty to get this working, after some searches I read articles and tutorials that said things such as -
- it cannot be used in VirtualBox as a machine version has not been released yet.
- you need to d/l the live ISO and burn it to a dvd, then use this to install to VirtualBox to get it to work.
- you need to use it as a Live dvd
- tutorials for older version of Fedora I tried and all failed to install it.

I knew the idea of the live ISO not being possible to install to VirtualBox to be wrong, as with a lot of help from [member=5414]firenice03[/member] on this forum we both installed the Raspberry PI Live iso months early in VB on LL.

Here is how I done it, similar to Pi (Pixel) the changes begin at 3. below.

Install the virtual machine as per the LL manual.
I used settings of 8GB Ram 20GB space.

create the machine, then highlight and click settings.
click position #1 like on image
click position #2 like on image
click the down arrow like position #3 on image and select your downloaded iso location.
click okay

1. Click start to install machine.
2. when install is completed, look to the top of VirtualBox for the "Devices Tab", click and look for "disconnect drive". Dont click it yet.
3&4. Click FedoraWorkstation-26 desktop menu and select to reboot Fedora. Whilst it begins to reboot click Devices then click to untick and disconnect drive/mounted ISO.
5. on reboot it will ask for a few more choices. Complete these and then shut down Fedora virtual machine.
6. the storage area for the fedora machine should look like the image below.

Notes.
1. Not disconnecting the devices meant the Live iso on each starting of the Fedora machine began a LIVE iso session with the option to install... all over again. (similar to Pi)

2. Pressing to disconnect the devices (virtual drive for mounted Live ISO) before clicking to restart Fedora corrupted the Fedora install (the messages were the hard drive is corrupted) , and it crashed every time on boot up, after those install tries.

3. After some weeks of trying, I found this way by searching "how to disconnect live iso in VB" and similar phrases.

Summary
After using the above method I had zero issues to install Fedora-Workstation-26 in VirtualBox on the first try of this method, on Linux Lite.
I have deleted it and reinstalled using the same method a few times to check it worked each time, it did.

It might be useful for anyone installing it, or if they face a similar problem in VirtualBox with another distro.

Hi everyone! Hope you're all having a nice life! Smile
Everytime I download everything and click on "open folder" in Firefox something else happens, instead of the required action a media player is open. I just uploaded this video so you can see for yourselves what I'm talking about. How can I troubleshoot this? What can be causing this? By the way, it's happening now with FF 57 but it also did with the previous version which I guess was 56..???  I just didn't pay much attention to it because I was using Opera but now I'm trying Firefox's new version and so far kind of like it.
a video on youtube

Thanks in advance for your answers/opinions/guidance/help Smile

Please excuse these basic questions, however despite learning more from mistakes than my immediate successes I am interested in saving time & effort Wink

I will be getting about 6 of the donated youth computers back some of which are still running a windows OS (mainly Win XP) and some which are already using LL.

First question -
1) I’m thinking on the ones running a Windows OS when possible I should first try LL dual boot I think it’s called to ensure that the computer WILL run LL. If it runs fine from the USB then go ahead and install LL as the only OS. Is my thinking correct or as long as it’s a computer and not a chromebook is the ability to have LL OS a “given”?

As long as these Win OS computers work with LL, I would go ahead and wipe them with DBAN then install LL.

2) with the ones already running LL, does going back to an earlier restore point and simply deleting/trashing any “added files or documents” make sense?  Otherwise I realize it isn’t too much work to wipe with DBAN and reload if best..?

3) Lastly, one computer that was running Win 10 was returned to me as the youth could no longer get into it as apparently it was asking for an admin password, yet was not responding to it. I suspect it had a virus and when I fired it up while I can’t recall exactly the message it indicted that I needed to put in a recovery CD. Unfortunately I forgot about trying to boot into safe mode simply thinking that I’d wipe it and load LL 3.6. After wiping it I went into change the boot order and from the boot order screen it does not have the option of USB so I went into BIOS and I require the original Microsoft (?) password in order to have permission to get into the boot order area. Unfortunately the original donor does not recall what that PW might be and to have them call Microsoft and sort it out I think is too much of a hassle.  So since I can have it boot from a CD I need to make an ISO of LL 3.6

“The Catch” is - I have made a non-Mac bootable Dvd by downloading the ISO to my Mac which can then burn the ISO image to a blank dvd, but I have only one blank dvd available. I want to verify that it is possible to download the PC 32 bit ISO version of LL 3.6 to my Mac from the Linux lite site and then be able to burn the ISO like I have done in the past? (I have been successful with ISOs of Win XP, DBAN, etc.)

although I have migrated to using USBs rather than DVD/CDs if I need to do so I will purchase the smallest package of dvd/CDs if I make a mistake.

Sorry for the length of this post and it’s basic nature,
Janet

To my amazement I have discovered that my Dell Inspiron desktop was designed NOT to be bootable UEFI.
(It is five years old and just sat for half that time, so has plenty of life left in it.)

I found this while trying over and over to migrate from Legacy to UEFI, so ended up at the Dell site, to
see an engineer had stated that the boot could not be changed as it was built to be that way.

(Well it explored a lot that this old man could not easily follow, and it does explain many misadventures I
have had trying other distros that would install but not reboot. (BEFORE Linux Lite!)

Will Linux Lite stay Legacy boot?  Is there any other distro left that will, and maybe not ubuntu-based?

  Thanks for any suggestions.

Currently have LL installed on a dual boot drive beside Windows 7.  After looking at the Libre Office Apps they seem to be compatible with MS Office.  So I'm curious of how many have completely eliminated their Windows partition and only use LL.  In my case I have other Windows machines if I am forced or need it for an unsupported application.  Happy to hear your thoughts.

No need to install spotify if you only use the free service with no need for off-line listening.
It works in the UK, but does it work worldwide?

I've been quite happy with the onboard Archive Manager, but I started looking for one that has the option of a single-click interface, to save my wrists a little work.

I didn't find one (suggestions are welcome), but in the search I did come across PeaZip, which has a nicer interface and a lot more options than the default AM.

The only thing lacking, from my perspective, beside single-click action, is shell integration. Some ways to do this are given - copying a desktop shortcut to the sbin folder, or copying scripts to the usr/local/share folder, but these have not worked for me. The prog is portable, yet it uses a .deb installer package, which I don't understand.

Here's an excerpt from its FreeDesktop folder:

Quote:With following instructions you can easily integrate PeaZip with Gnome and KDE:

1) Install a PeaZip installable package (DEB, RPM, TGZ), or extract PeaZip portable to the desired path and link peazip binary in one of the system's binary folder i.e. /bin, /sbin, /usr/bin, or /usr/local/bin (recommended)

2a) Gnome
- Nautilus scripts
Manually copy 'Archiving' folder, which is contained in 'nautilus-scripts', to your user's profile '.gnome2/nautilus-scripts' folder; that folder is hidden, so you can either find it flagging 'View>Show hidden files' in Nautilus, or clicking on 'Scripts>Open scripts folder' in Gnome's context menu.
This integration is NOT automatically performed by PeaZip installer, because nautilus-scripts path location is currently not widely standardized.
- .desktop files
Copy peazip.desktop files in /usr/share/applications
NOTE Gnome is often configured to use /usr/share/application and /usr/share/icons paths (i.e. on Ubuntu), but the paths may be different on some distribution or in some specific installations.
This integration is automatically performed by the installer.

Does anyone know a way to do this? Thanks.

Hi - A very newbie to Linux and LL.

I am booting LL from USB.  The Clock time in the tray is showing 6 hours ahead.  Obviously due to a time zone setting.  Is there a graphical way to change this in settings?  I don't see any indication of this and I am not a programmer and would refer not to write code.  TIA
