When I finish installing on various donated computers I have always checked "Update Drivers", but other than one computer I have left the circle "Do not use the device" checked as it describes the device as and says the following:

Unknown:Unknown
this device is not working
O Using Processor microcode firmware for Intel CPIs from intel-microcode (proprietary)
O(this one has the blue dot) Do not use the device.

Should I be clicking on the upper option (using Processor...)?

I wasn't sure if I should be "accepting" and thus applying any and ALL suggested driver changes?

thanks,
Janet

Forum: Installing Linux Lite

this might be a dumb question, but here goes:

I have a youth who contacted me as his computer has a virus, he wondered if I had a Win 7 Pro disk and could reformat his computer. I’m meeting him Tuesday to show him LL 3.4 and if he likes it will load it as I do not want to get into doing the windows thing again - what a time and effort hog,

So I’m wondering:
1) if I can get into setup and change the boot order to USB first will LL start up if this computer does have a virus?

2) am I risking infecting my memory stick by doing so?

My rational is so that I can test drive LL to see if all works ok before using DBAN on the computer.

Thoughts or comments or advice?

Thanks,
Janet

http://www.slax.org/

Quote: Slax is a modern, portable, small and fast Linux operating system with modular approach and outstanding design. It runs directly from your USB flash drive without installing, so you can carry it everywhere you go in your pocket. Despite its small size, Slax provides nice graphical user interface and the only two programs everyone really needs: a Web browser and a Terminal.
Slax is now based on Debian, which gives you the ability to benefit from its entire ecosystem. Tens of thousands of prebuilt packages with applications, all within reach thanks to apt command.

Been using this from time to time  over the years, ever since they used to have Iso builder site. Where one could build their own iso before downloading. Now dis-continued.  I like it about as much as Puppy Linux.

Please don't get me wrong. I love LL as much others do. But isn't the feather logo with that yellowish background, little awkward. I thing there is a good scope to improve it. That section needs artwork refinement.

I know that yellow bg can be changed easily, but still it will be cool if LL by default provides a cool new boot screen. A new boot screen which will be simple and lite just as LL .

Hi,
I recently installed LL 3.4 on a donated Dell Inspiron 1545 and unlike all the other LL 3.4 installs I have done on other computers, the wifi does not automatically work.  My issue is exactly the same as the recent post "No wifi on Acer Aspire new install of LL 3.4"

One catch is that the setup is locked thus I cannot get into the network area to check or change things.  It is saying I require an administrative password which the owner cannot recall having.  In the replies on the Acer Aspire post someone made a comment about LL 3.6 "having additional broadcom support"...not sure if that applies to the wifi I might have or not.

I do know that the Wifi was functioning when I placed it with a youth 7 months ago, however because it picked up a virus (when it was running Win 10) when I got it back I simply wiped it with DBAN as I could not get into the computer to assess anything.

I ran the command that Jerry mentioned in the Acer post and this is what I got:

CPU-Dual core Pentium T$#)) (-MCP-) speed/mas~1600/2100 MHz Kernal~4.4.0-70-generic i686 Up~2 min Mem~251.4/2988.8MB HDD~500.1GB(1.4% used) Proc~170 Client~S*ell inxi~2.2.35
(NOTE* - my photo of the screen cut the letters off a bit hence I put a * in for the letter I could not see after Client).

I'm currently going to search around the house and see if I have an ethernet cord.

1) I have tried the F2 and the Fcn-F2 to see if the Wifi toggles on - no go. I also re-booted in case that was required, still no go.
2) I cannot get into Setup per what I wrote above.

My questions:
1) is it possible installing LL 3.6 might give me Wifi?
2) If I cannot get the wifi resolved will a USB wifi adaptor work?  I have googled some and found one that "says" it works with Linux although it seems it may not be as easy as just putting it in and it works..?

Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Janet

All,

I'm running 2.6 64 bit and have noticed lately when I go into htop I have 55 processes showing "/usr/sbin/apache2 -k -start".  I suspect this is some sort of startup error but am learning linux so don't know where to start the log search or problem resolution.  Anybody able to give me some places to start trying to resolve it (if not an issue please let me know).

Thanks,
Jeff
