Lite no longer starts since last update
Posted by: JohnD - 03-22-2018, 04:01 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (8)

Since last update, I can no longer use Lite. The boot process ends in an error message which says that it was not possible to open / load the display. A problem with X. I do not no where and how to fix it.

Clicking "Sound Settings..." in the task bar takes me to the System Settings ???
Posted by: Tenderfoot - 03-21-2018, 10:04 PM - Forum: Sound - Replies (5)

I have been running Linux Lite 2.8 since it came out and it has worked great.

Recently, I left clicked on the speaker sound icon in the taskbar and it opened and I can adjust sound using my mouse wheel as normal, however, when I clicked on "Sound Settings...", instead of taking me to the Volume Control Panel where all the tabs for input and output settings are, it now takes me to the "System Settings" panel where there are NO Sound or Mixer settings.  I can open the Volume Control window from the Main Menu without any problems.

Not sure how this changed, but I would love to be able to put it back like it was originally.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan

Updating -- maybe upgrading - Grandpas Linux Lite breaks UI desktop on reboot
Posted by: gdlinux - 03-21-2018, 09:30 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (5)

I went from work over to grandpas house since he can't get the desktop up anymore after a Sunday night update and/or upgrade.

We installed 3.6 a month or 2 ago.  It was working great for him.  He's got an old AMD64 HP tower.  We can get to a terminal prompt if we Cntrl + Alt + F1 and login and do ls and see files etc.

We are still unclear if the 3.6 update was in fact a 3.8 Upgrade instead, or not.

Monday we didn't get anywhere, eventually fired another update...went home called back... he got a different UI (with fat mouse in wallpaper) ... but network (hard wired wouldn't connect).

Tuesday I went to his house thinking, oh well, new desktop widgets, I'll just get network working.  It wouldn't work.  Couldn't go direct to router in browser and ipconfig only had loopback in there.  Got to a frustrated point so started all over from scratch with the 3.6 disk he still had.  Installed it... did updates which took forever to download on his slow connection so maybe it was again an upgrade to 3.8 or something.  Finished it finally... go to do the final reboot and lo-and-behold...back to the broken state he was in on Sunday night.  Can only get to terminal if Cntrl + Alt + F1.    If I try to type firefox after logging in inside the terminal it complains about no DISPLAY.  I try to export various DISPLAY values like localhost:0.0 and other variants... no luck.

I'm guessing we need to be more careful so we STAY on 3.6 instead of ugrade to 3.8 (if in fact that is what has been happening).  Not sure when I can get over there again to help him but hoping someone either 1) knows what is likey the problem and/or 2) can give me some options regarding work arounds to get any UI to work.  Thanks.

Do external drives with 'Thunderbolt Plus' connectivity work with LL?
Posted by: m654321 - 03-21-2018, 11:37 AM - Forum: Hard Drives and SSDs - No Replies

I have a Thunderbolt port on my laptop in setup[1] in signature below, which obviously made me consider an external storage drive equipped with Thunderbolt-connectivity. The article at http://www.itpro.co.uk/storage/22740/usb...-is-better claims that such technology can move data at 4x the transfer rates of USB3.0, which is around 2.4GB/s

Unsurprisingly, you pay a lot more for this faster storage technology  :-\

However, before flirting any further with Thunderbolt, I really need to know if it's compatible with LL, or at least can be configured relatively easily to work effectively with it, or whether it's just  a Microsoft-only hardware?

  Too much Wine
Posted by: UncleTom - 03-21-2018, 03:28 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (2)

Crazy problem !
I noticed that IrfanView (my only successful Wine implementation) took a long time to start up.
In fact, the more I used it, the longer it took.

While browsing through the MainMenu editor,,,
look what I found in the Other category......

.... and the list goes on and on.  Too much wine, will cause one to repeat oneself !

  problems with Install Updates
Posted by: CaperAsh - 03-21-2018, 01:09 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (4)

Several times this week when I do my daily Install Updates I get an error message. Today I copied the log and will paste below as suggested by a pop-up message.

I should note that shortly after all this happened, and when I couldn't get anywhere with sudo apt-get update etc., a window popped up saying there was stuff to download, 125 MG worth, and that routine has run without error and with a successful completion message at the end as per usual.

  Default keyring to unlock message
Posted by: Vulgarus - 03-21-2018, 01:03 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (2)

Hello!

Im kinda new with LL but Im having sort of an issue (not sure if it is actually an issue) but here it is: Every time I start my pc it will show a default keyring to unlock and the wifi wont stay connected when the pc goes off and on, so, I enter the wifi password but instantly when I hit enter the "default keyring to unlock" message appears.

I have searched for help but I found something related to everytime chrome is opened, and that is not my issue.

thanks in advance ppl.

  In with the (really) old!
Posted by: TheDead - 03-20-2018, 08:25 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (7)

OK, I had to post this. albeit useless Wink

It was long but I successfully installed Linux Lite on a Pentium 3, 10GB HDD annnd, wait for it... 2-5-6 MBs of ultrafast RAM! Wink
It rebooted fine, was able to crawl and do updates and reboot too.
"Using"  the computer is another story though, almost anything is so slow that it "looks" crashed, but it's not.

I usually don't install under 1GB RAM on real crappy config but I didnt have any SDRAM RAM (ouch).
The project was too tempting. Wink, even though the laptop was giving to a guy just wanting to have a serial port to control an external device. /_ () /_

Cheers!
