  Wifi installation LLite 4.2
Posted by: tasManiac - 12-14-2018, 07:03 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (5)

I have just had to reinstall LLite 4 as it started to go unstable, and eventually locked up.

I originally installed this version 2 months ago.  I tried everything I could think of to recover it before I did the re-install but without success,

I run separate "/" and "/home" partitions so was able to reinstall from the original live disk into the original partitions. Doing this meant that it re-started where it left off but I found it had lost the WIFI connection.  The wired connection was fine.  This has never been a problem before, the computer is over a decade old and has had many varied installations over the years, and has never missed a beat - touch wood!

Prior to doing the re-installation the WIFI worked from the live disk perfectly normally, as did the wired connection.

I have since tried everything I could think of including trying to install the proper drivers from a Github backport source but to no avail.  I also configured the WIFI manually to the usual SSID but that had no effect either.

The Network controller is a Realtech RTL8192CE PCie (Rev 01). This had been working perfectly since I built the machine over a decade ago, and still seems fine.

I have just loaded up LL 3.19, and the WIFI has worked perfectly from the start with no input from me, as has been the case up to now after every new O/S.

Any suggestions?  I have been at it for nearly 3 days now and I would like to be able to update eventually, although 3.19 is performing normally as I write this.

New to Linux Lite and I have 2 major problems so far w/ Plex and my Printer
Posted by: mwe - 12-14-2018, 01:25 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (5)

I am brand new to Linux Lite after being on MacOS and Windows for years.  Im going to save you all the crying, lol but I love it so far except I have 2 MAJOR problems that are about to push me over the edge.

Ever since last night...yes 24 hours...I have been trying to get Plex to see my media on my dual 8TB hard drives.  Something about permissions etc etc.  Im lost.  I can see my media just fine in the file manager but Plex can not

Also, I have two label printers that I use on a daily basis to print package labels on.  One is a Dymo 450 and the other is a Brother QL-700.  I can not get either of them to work.  Something about CUPS and drivers etc etc ..I only need one to work and I'll sell the other one.

And please please don't send me links to articles.  I have been online reading all the articles since yesterday..  I need real help not to read some more links that I don't really understand.

Thanks in advance.

Please, - DVB-T stick, Not only TV, realtek..., howto install on LL3.8 32bits
Posted by: Lite1964 - 12-13-2018, 06:47 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (9)

I am trying to benfit from LL after windowsing for years and still using old, weak laptops ( aprox 1,5 ghz, 2 gb ram, 32 bits). But it is not easy, must admit. Lots to browse the net to find some magicall sudos apt-gets makes that do not necessarilly result in needed solution.
Can someone, please, write clear instruction how to acctivate my TV dvbt stick?
I am not a pc man to much, alas. MeTV doesnt see the stick at the moment.
I'd appreciate any help.

Some comments after installing LL 4.2
Posted by: Sprintrdriver - 12-12-2018, 07:12 PM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - No Replies

I will write this now while I still remember about the installation process of the new version of LL. Most of those is probably very similar of other Ubuntu based distros.

[feature request] Keyboard settings in Live-cd mode is forgotten after installation
Since most of the computer I touches is equipped with Norwegian layout, I change the layout any time when I start any live-cd.
After install is finished, the keyboard layout is reverted back to default. It's not a problem, but I may have to create a second user to be able to name a new (if single) user to a fresh install - practically impossible* to specify Øyvind, Åge, etc as name of a single user.
Therefore it would be a very nice touch if the installation would be able to remember the keyboard layout from live-cd during install.

[feature request] Lite User Manager - cannot add users with encrypted home directory
I have just learned how to encrypt an users home directory. Maybe it's a bad idea to make it very easy (because some users may not backup their data), but my opinion is that it would be a good idea to be able to create a new user with Lite User Manager, and at the same time specify that user should have it's home directory encrypted.

[annoying behavior] Terminal - copy text from terminal also copy some non-printable characters.
example:
gjest  ~  lsblk

Except from that - LL seems very mature - have had friends over that have asked me how I made "windows" look that nice  ;D

user forum - removes newlines on posting
Posted by: Sprintrdriver - 12-11-2018, 08:12 PM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - Replies (9)

Hi.
I have posted a couple of threads here recently due to some questions after installed LL 4.2, so I noticed one behavior.
Each time I post in this forum - it appears to me that each single line shift is simply removed. In other word: If I want a line shift, then I have to add (press Enter) twice in input field. Otherwise, the resulting post get messed up by something looking like one very long sentence.
I use Firefox. Could this be due some keyboard rules (windows use CrLf while Linux use only Lf ?) in one way or another.

Thanks

[solved] Add new users - no option to encrypt home directory
Posted by: Sprintrdriver - 12-11-2018, 08:01 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (1)

Hi.
Have just installed LL 4.2 - and I'm starting to add new users. I wish those users to have an encrypted home dir (both users is actually myself and I run backup from time to time).

The issue I face is that the Lite User Manager doesn't have an option for "encrypt home directory" for adding new users. Also, I cannot find anywhere in the man pages for useradd and adduser command, how to set encryption for the users home folder.
I had Linux Lite 3.6 installed on this computer before, and I recall that it had the ability to make the users home dirs encrypted when adding new users.

Found this aged article for Ubuntu from 2012 - hope that still works

Ok - that didn't work. After creating the user "geir", the command did not succeded:

not Ok, is important for me that I have the ability to make user profiles with encrypted home folder. Is this a distro dependent feature after all ?

Home partition not formatted when upgrade - how to retreive old settings?
Posted by: Sprintrdriver - 12-11-2018, 04:21 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - No Replies

Hi forum.
At last - I have done a install of Linux Lite 4.2 (had 3.6 before). Before I flood the text post with details about what I want and all that, I'll just say that I made a usb stick with like eight distros that I ran each for a while in live-cd mode to see how this old computer reacted and so (I was determined to update to something newer anyway). Yet - I choosed Linux Lite, this is what I want to run on my old Latitude. And the bonus thing is - this is one of the very few distros that actually supports the wifi-card in this computer, and save me for some work (to drag the cat5 cable all around the flor and open doors while installing is a hurdle - I'm a little lazy yes).

Ok here is what I want some help and guidelines forMy /home was a separate partition that was not formatted due to the install of LL 4.2. All the other partitions was formatted ( /boot / /var /tmp ) but otherwise the same partition scheme as before.
On the previous installation (when LL 3.6 was installed), I had two users that I want to transfer all settings for (all content in their home folder):user1 and user2Both user had their home folder encrypted when first created.
I had tried this - no successOpened the Linux Lite User Manager, and simply tried to Add new user with the name user1.
But no - I get this error:

Code:
It was not possible to add  user 'user1'. System message:
useradd: user 'user1' already exists
Incorrect password or command failed. Try again? (y/N)
Is it possible to re-create the old users in a fairly easy way ?

NB : Thi is not a distress situation in any way as I do have backup of all the important stuff that existed in those profiles to an external hdd, so I can always just create new users, log in and copy back old data. But I want to learn if there is other (and smarter) ways to achieve this.

Thanks

[edit]
Currently trying this solution:
https://www.howtogeek.com/116297/how-to-...on-ubuntu/
with the exeption - running installed OS.Result : Not successfully - this is the terminal result+output:[table] [tr] [td] gjest  /  home  sudo ecryptfs-recover-private[sudo] password for gjest:
INFO: Searching for encrypted private directories (this might take a while)...
find: ‘/run/user/1000/gvfs’: Permission denied
gjest  /  home  [/td] [/tr] [/table]New minor issue : copy text from terminal also includes non-ascii characters? How to prevent that?
Also reading on that web page (from 2012) saying I should have a pass-phrase from when I created those user profiles. Of course I haven't any pass phrase avaiable, so I assume this is a lost case (ie I have to resort to the backup copy on the external drive).
