  New Recruit
Posted by: Georg - 02-04-2020, 12:10 AM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (6)

Hello,
I'm new here and didn't instal Linux Lite yet.
Working still with Win 7, although it's not supported anymore.
I wonder if anyone could tell me if the things i made with Fotoshop, MS word, paint etc. that i saved on Win 7, could be saved to Linux lite, and then work with them in linux applications?
Best regards,
Georg.

Burning ISO flash drive seems problematic?
Posted by: az2020 - 02-03-2020, 04:25 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (17)

Hi, I've been distro "speed dating" for a year. (ha). About a year ago I installed 15 distros to compare memory use. I just did it again, with about 25 distros.

My impression has consistently been that there's something odd about Linux Lite's iso. The reason I say that: I've had virtually no trouble "burning" the other distros to USB flash (and booting them. I might have trouble with drivers loading, reaching a desktop. But, the flash drives are recognized and at least *start* to boot.). I've burned them using unetbootin, MX USB Maker, the dd command. They don't seem to care.

But, every time I try Linux Lite... it seems very particular. Either the USB flash drive isn't recognized by the BIOS as even available to boot from. Or, it is recognized -- but when I choose to boot it, it does nothing and hands-off to the hard disk (i.e., the USB flash drive will be accessed for 5-10 seconds, and then the hard drive boots as if that's what I choose.).

This has been on two different computers (an older Toshiba Satellite C55-B, and a new Acer Aspire 5 A515-43-R19L).

Yesterday I was able to boot Linux Lite 4.8 in a Virtual Box for the first time. (I love what I see. I definitely would like to "hop" to it sometime.). This morning I thought I would pursue the bootable "burning" problem further.

I see on your web page that it's only supposed to be burned with Etcher or the DD command. I tried both, but the resulting USB flash drive won't begin to boot (in the way I described above). When I try to open that device in gparted, I get an error: "Invalid partition table - recursive partition on /dev/sdb"

I'm raising this topic not so much as "how can I get this to work," but "why is it this way?" As I said, I have not had this experience with 20 other distros (maybe I've had it with Antix 19). And, I had this experience last April when I "speed dated" some distros. I'm having it again this time.

Linux is known to be frustrating migrating to it (from Windows). It seems like something's wrong with the Linux Lite iso in a way that would make that even a higher-friction experience.  So, I'm raising this topic to try to help in some way. It's hard to believe it's just me (or, is it just me? I've tried two computers, different USB devices, burning it different ways -- including the Linux Lite-supported ways).

I'm willing to try things, and provide more info to track down what's happening.

  DVD drive not recognised
Posted by: dapeba - 02-03-2020, 09:14 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (29)

Have just installed LL on an older laptop via the DVD drive. No problem with the installation and the laptop is now at least as fast as my main machine, thanks for that.  Have checked the BIAS boot sequence and Sony DVD-RW DW-Q520A is shown, but it is not recognised by LL. I'm not conversant with LL and much internet searching has not provided any info on how to get the DVD drive mounted in LL. I would be grateful if you could point me in the right direction. Many thanks

Installed LL UEFI test version 4.2 and upgraded to Legacy 4.8
Posted by: LLUser - 02-02-2020, 08:28 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (2)

Up through the years I have tried many Linux distros, but always come back to LL. This time I struggled a bit installing LL, since I was not able to change the UEFI to Legacy mode on my PC. After reading the LL website and forums, I installed the LL UEFI test version 4.2 (ticked for encrypted installation) and upgraded thereafter to LL 4.8. It all went like a breeze, and I had only one remark: It took very long time to shut down and boot the system. Booting took up to 1m47s from entering the passphrase to fully launched.

After checking LL forums, I found below:
Run the following commands as suggested by firenice03 over on linuxliteos.com/forum ( https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/insta...(on-boot)/ ):
    sudo apt purge virtualbox*
    sudo systemctl stop vboxadd.service
    sudo systemctl stop vboxadd-service.service
    sudo systemctl disable vboxadd.service
    sudo systemctl disable vboxadd-service.service

After following above advise, my PC now shut down in 7s and boot in 34s from entering the passphrase to fully launched!

Finally I would really appreciate if someone could help me with my below 3Q:
1. Will there be an UEFI version for the upcoming 5.0 version (or a test version similar to the present 4.2)? My concern is that I will not be able to upgrade from version 4.8.
2. Does anyone know how to change the UEFI to Legacy mode on my PC (ASUS VivoBook Model L203MA)?
3. When installing the LL UEFI test version 4.2 and upgrading thereafter to LL 4.8; will it give the same result as installing the LL 4.8 directly in legacy mode?

Boot Freezing after installing AMD Drivers in Linux Lite 4.8
Posted by: Anarcho Pingu - 02-02-2020, 07:33 PM - Forum: Start up and Shutdown - Replies (2)

So I recently installed Linux Lite 4.8 and installed a driver for my GPU (MSI RX 580 4G) because I was having frame rate problems playing games.
Driver: https://github.com/GPUOpen-Drivers/AMDVLK
So I installed following the directions for Ubuntu and now every time I boot with

Code:
nomodeset
or
Code:
quiet splash
, it will freeze and not ever go to the login screen.

  Firefox
Posted by: LarryB1607 - 02-02-2020, 01:52 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (12)

I am trying to migrate from Windows 7.  I tried transferring my Firefox profile I was using with W7.  I renamed the default profile and inserted my profile. That did not work, I also tried deleting the installed profile and inserted mine and an error came up that it could not access the profile.

I also cannot import my old bookmarks.  I exported them to an HTML file and put them on a USB stick.  I used Firefox's import tool and nothing was found.  I put the HTML file on my desktop and I could open it and open the links inside, but would really like to have them transferred.  I am sure I used the prescribed way of doing this so I am at a loss as to why it does not work here.

I am in the process of setting up Firefox Sync to see if that will work.

  Running HTML5 online games
Posted by: Calin Musceleanu - 02-02-2020, 07:45 AM - Forum: Games Support - Replies (3)

Hi there!
I'm facing some issues with a game that I'm playing in browser. The game is Forge of Empires, which was previously based on Flash. As Flash will no longer be supported starting with December 2020, the developers switched to HTML5 platform.
However, the game runs very slow, many times the screen is freezing for several minutes, which is quite annoying.
I'm using Chrome web browser.
Is there any tweak that I could do to make this game run faster?
Thanks in advance!

  Foxit Issues
Posted by: ejc - 02-01-2020, 12:29 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (4)

I have an issue I do not recall having on other systems
when i want to annotate a file, i am usually allowed to select the "note" tool and then just click in the margin wherever I want to stick a note. With Foxit on LL I am obliged to first select this option (add a note) from the menu or to type Ctrl + N before I can stick a note somewhere, each time i stick a note.

It would be extremely nice if someone could adapt PDF-XChange Viewer to LL; from my experience it is just as light as Foxit on low tech machines running Win7. It has a plus on Foxit which is that one can export his comments/pop-up notes. To be also allowed to export the list of bookmarks with the relevant page where they are assigned would be fantastic, since bookmarks can be used as a place to store the keywords related to the topic on the page.

  Desktop customization issues
Posted by: ejc - 02-01-2020, 11:02 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (2)

Hello,
I notice that when moving an file on the desktop, if i try to let ca 1 cm or a bit less close to a folder, it get absorbed into it. Anyway to change that?
Also, how can I dissociate the icons and the desktop grid? Let's say I arrange the icons on my desktop and i want them to remain where they are? or just the bin let's say? is it related to the updates or there is a way to dissociate them?

LL 3.8 in persistent mode won't boot
Posted by: Moltke - 01-31-2020, 10:25 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (3)

Hi everyone! Hope you're all having a nice life and a wondeful 2020! Smile

Today I created a LL 3.8 Live USB with persistence enabled using rufus, I've done this with other distros and they work just fine. But when presented with the boot screen and hit Start Linux Lite nothing happens and the countdown restarts. Pressing tab to configure boot parameters I removed quiet so I could see  any error which I did see

Code:
/casper/vmlinuz ... invalid parameter: No such file or directory.
So this is what is preventing the OS to start. I tried a few combinations but none worked. Thing is the file is there but not sure what the problem is.  Also, I noticed there's a separate dir in the USB called casper-rw and can't access its contents, might that be the problem?
This is the contents fo the isolinux.cfg

Code:
# MENU HIDDEN
# MENU HIDDENROW 8
MENU WIDTH 78
MENU MARGIN 15
MENU ROWS 8
MENU VSHIFT 7
MENU TABMSGROW 13
MENU CMDLINEROW 13
MENU HELPMSGROW 16
MENU HELPMSGENDROW 29

label live
  menu label Start Linux Lite
  menu default
  kernel /casper/vmlinuz
  append  file=/cdrom/preseed/custom.seed boot=casper persistent initrd=/casper/initrd.gz quiet splash --

label xforcevesa
menu label Start Linux Lite in safe mode
  kernel /casper/vmlinuz
append  file=/cdrom/preseed/custom.seed boot=casper xforcevesa nomodeset persistent initrd=/casper/initrd.gz ramdisk_size=1048576 root=/dev/ram rw noapic noapci nosplash irqpoll --

label check
  menu label Check Install Media
  kernel /casper/vmlinuz
  append  boot=casper integrity-check persistent initrd=/casper/initrd.gz quiet splash --

label memtest
menu label Run memtest (memory tester)
  kernel /isolinux/memtest
  append -

label hd
menu label Boot the first hard disk
  localboot 0x80

label restart
        MENU LABEL Restart
        COM32 reboot.c32

I think editing this file might do the trick but not sure how or what to change though. Any help/advice is great appreciated. Thanks in advance for your answers Smile
