ISO size growing over the years?
Posted by: lennel101 - 06-04-2020, 08:00 PM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - Replies (10)

I love Linux Lite, have used it for years and continue to use it for our family storage and Minecraft server. I came from DSL and Tiny Core Linux before finding Linux Lite 1.0.8 and was hooked.

My question is, for a light version of Linux, the ISO has doubled in size since the 1.0.8 release (700mb) I fell in love with.

What is the reason for the increase in ISO size? More drivers? More software? Bigger software packages?

I see that 5.0 is down to 1.3GB which is a welcome sight from the 4.6 release that was 1.5GB but is there any way you can get the ISO back under a GB? I thought the original premise of a Lite version was that it fit on a CD (700mb) and used light system applications and desktop environment?

Linux Lite 5.0 .vs MX Linux
Posted by: thisisjay - 06-04-2020, 05:23 PM - Forum: Suggestions and Feedback - Replies (17)

My bedroom TV computer is a Chromebox that was hacked to run any UEFI compatible OS. I ran Windows 8.1 for a few years, but 8.1 is getting a little long in the tooth and Windows 10 is a joke.

The main requirement I had was being able to run Retropie which narrows my options down to Debian distros. I went distro hopping for something that was fast on my limited hardware and easy to use with my limited understanding of Linux. Ubuntu is fairly easy to use, but really slow. It seems to get a little slower with every new release. Even some modern computers run like carp in Ubuntu. The watermark for ease of use is how easy is it to install Chrome and Kodi. If it takes me more than 5 minutes to figure out how to install those two very common apps and get the latest versions, the distro sucks.

MX Linux treated me reasonably well and I might have rode of into the sunset running it if not for a news article about the Linux Lite 5 release. I tried the Live version from my SD card, as I always do, and even in "test drive" mode it seemed really fast, so I decided to try installing it.

Long story short, this is the perfect OS for any PC with a few caveats. There are 2 small problems and 1 huge unsolvable problem that would give me pause in recommending it to everyone.

Small problems:

1. Most of the preinstalled is the best available in the open source world with two exceptions. The default "notepad" is shite. Featherpad, the default in MX Linux, is much better. Also Qpdfview is the best pdf viewer because it also allows editing of PDF documents without having to deal with Adobe. Fortunately both apps are easily installable and able to be set as the default.

2. Most apps open in the upper left hand corner of the screen every time regardless of where I had the window when I closed it. A few apps, like Featherpad get this right, but other apps like the file manager do not.

Huge unsolvable(any time soon) problem:

No support for commercial software. Not really the fault of Linux Lite or any other distro, but it is the reason why most people are not running Linux. This is not a deal breaker for me because I use all open source software(Kodi, Retropie, Qbittorrent, etc.), but anyone that needed to run Quickbooks, MS Office, Photoshop, etc. would be sunk. The open source alternatives to these programs either don't exist or they suck. Commercial software will never be available in Linux as long as there are 5 million distros. If we could all just agree that Linux Lite is the only distro worth running and focus all farther development there companies might actually start porting their software to Linux. Until then I just don't see it happening.

  Install Updates Error
Posted by: thedoor - 06-04-2020, 04:32 PM - Forum: Security & Bug Fixes - Replies (1)

Change: I was also having some other problems today, so I decided to just bite the bullet and do a new install. So far all is well. So I'm through with this issue for now.

I redid my recent LinuxLite 4.8 installation last night by replacing it with the new LinuxLite 5.0. I added quite a bit of new software. The PC was running through the night. When prompted for new updates this morning, I got the following message and followed the instructions to post it here.

https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/14912/cr...ash-drive/
Can someone advise whether the above routine will work for LL5.0.  Have 64gb USB stick and don't want to risk it if unsure.  Thanks.Etcher unfortunately does not give Persistent option.
Also once made, can I install SOPHOS antivirus scanner on the persistent usb drive so that I can scan any PC I plug into afterwards - service tool.
Thanks

  Google chrome keyring password
Posted by: TMG1961 - 06-04-2020, 08:06 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (4)

Google chrome keeps asking for the password for the default keyring. I did edit the launcher and changed the command to /usr/bin/google-chrome-stable %U --password-store=basic
But it doesnt work. Did work without a problem on LL 4.8 and earlier.

Anyone got an idea what might be causing this and how to solve it?

Customization asks for password. Password not accepted
Posted by: userzero - 06-03-2020, 11:24 PM - Forum: Desktop Customization - Replies (2)

Hi All,

Just installed 5.0. Nice upgrade.  Question:

I have two users on my system, myself (created at install) and a second account created later.  The second account works as it should but I've found a minor issue.  When I go to the "About Me" section and try to change my login image/photo, it asks me for a password to proceed.  I use the 2nd account's password but the system says its incorrect.  I've tried several times and even logged out and back in with the same password used for "About Me."  I then tried the password for the original account created at install.  No go.  I'm not sure what else to do.  Caps Lock is off and I've typed the 2 passwords into text editor so I can see that they're correct and then copy and pasted them in.  Still no go.  Any ideas?  BTW- Same thing happened on the first original account when changing "About Me" icon.  I entered my password and it worked without a problem.

Thanks,

Chris

Is this normal behavior with the newer AMD processors? Just curious as my FX4350 does not show up like this.
