  Installer Not Recognizing eMMC Storage
Posted by: a_necronaut - 11-09-2020, 12:59 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (4)

Hello,

I've got an Acer Cloodbook 14 (A01-431-C8G8) that I've used to run several Linux distros over the years - Peppermint, Solus, Xubuntu, Lubuntu - and haven't run into this issue before, but I've never made this mistake before either.

Before burning the latest LL 5.2 distro to my flash drive using Startup Disk Creator, I was going to put Peppermint on it again via Unetbootin. The issue, however, is that I made the mistake of writing the ISO to mmcblk0p1 - the boot sector. Perhaps that's what's affecting the bigger problem. After the fact, there were some other steps, but ultimately I ended up with LL 5.2 on my flash drive, written using Startup Disk Creator, as mentioned before.

Trying to install LL 5.2 has had its own issues. I have tried several paths and will try to detail them as well as possible below.

1 - UEFI Enabled, SecureBoot Disabled

a) Normal install process triggers an ACPI BIOS Error and dumps to initramfs. This also happens when trying LL. The installation software never boots under this option.

Note: When dumped to BusyBox/initramfs, running the command "cat /proc/partitions" show the eMMC drive as mmcblk0, ~0p1, ~0p2, so the drive is operational. It also shows in the BIOS.

b) Edited GRUB install command with e to add various combinations of: noapic, nolapic, acpi=off. Using any one of these is enough to bypass the ACPI issue in a). The install software runs a MD5SUM check and then proceeds. Upon arriving at the step to install the boot sector, the only option given is /dev/sda, which is the flash drive. Any option other than exit crashes the installation, though crash or exit both eventually allow the "try" version of LL to boot, which can't occur normally.

Note: While in Try LL, none of Disks, GParted, or various Terminal commands show any signs of the existence of mmblkX. With the exception of nolapic, which disables the touchpad, everything seems to work.

c) Compatibility mode gets further than a) but hangs on an audio codec issue. Compatibility mode with arguments hangs at an ISO issue.

I've also tried UEFI Enabled+SecureBoot Enabled, Legacy Mode instead of UEFI, various Legacy Mode options, with and without arguments, all of which fall completely. Only b) above results in the installation software actually running.

Any idea why the system recognizes the eMMC storage drive, but LL does not? Is there a way to force a resume in a)?

A couple of things of note - I cannot boot into Lubuntu anymore due to the Peppermint snafu, I do not have another computer to test and play with, and I don't (at the moment) have another flash drive to write a known-working OS to (can you write a live USB from a live USB state?).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I have returned after four and a half years. I just installed Lite 5.2. It has become even better Smile

  New CPU, System Shutting Down
Posted by: Sauri Extras - 11-06-2020, 03:27 AM - Forum: Games Support - Replies (3)

Hi. Sauri here.

Just recently, a friend of mine was about to dispose some old Socket G2 cpu he got from his pops working on a tech store 5 years ago, an i5-2520m Q17N ES to be exact. He readily gave it to me as he was basically throwing out old stuff from their house since it was piling up like a trash hill.

So I got the cpu for free and was compatible to use on my Acer TM4750, replacing the Pentium B960 on it. Installed it so easily while cleaning the fan of the cpu and applying some Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut as paste. Paired with my new PNY SSD, I installed LL 4.8 (since I can't install 5.0 or newer due to UEFI or something) and it worked like a charm.

Here was the thing bothering me instead:
I play Minecraft just to enjoy my free time exploring or building. Now when I launch the game it's just fine. Title screen seems smoother to use, I have no problems navigating the options but when I load a world, it loads then the laptop suddenly just shuts down out of nowhere.

My old trusty laptop has no battery now since it's dead and here I'm thinking that my 65watt brick might be the problem since I remember this happens when power supply can't supply enough power to the system, so I grabbed my 90watt brick and tadaah... still shutting down when a world is loaded.

Probably it was just a minecraft thing so I opened steam and launch Amnesia: TDD. 3 seconds in and not even reaching the title screen, laptop suddenly shuts down... again.

So I tried something that I never thought I would do... install windows 8.1 again on the laptop. And surprise, surprise... minecraft plays normally (though sub 20 fps 'cause no Optifine). So I'm wondering what's up with that? I really don't want to go back to windows due to not being a day or so, just installing the drivers basically and system goes slow and high resource consumption. Any ideas as to what I might be doing wrong? Something something LL only problem or something? I would highly appreciate any answers to inquiry people since I really love this OS.

yours truly,
Sauri

  "Remove" GRUB from startup?
Posted by: eikelein - 11-05-2020, 05:41 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (1)

Installed LL 5.2
All fine and good BUT on EVERY startup I get a black full screen with some for me irrelevant text about editing ending in a terminal input prompt: grub>
I type EXIT and the system resumes booting normally AFTER a re-boot.
I have not found anything anywhere about this behavior.
ALL my customers are retirement age or older and all consider themselves computer illiterate; I can not ask them to "just type exit", they want it to just work and I think that's understandable.
Since I often recommend and "resurrect" older PC's with Linux Lite I kind'a need a solution to avoid that grub> prompt completely.
Can anyone please help with a link or direct advice?TIAeikelein

The laptop can receive files but cannot send i get the message "failed connection" also nitroShare only sends files when the Operating system is present so although it sees my android phone it does not know the operating system.

Is there an easy work around for this ?

  Linux lite freezes randomly
Posted by: BerryBenson - 11-04-2020, 05:47 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (8)

Linux lite freezes randomly. I tried doing ctrl+alt+backspace and that dosen't work. I then tried ctrl+alt+f1 and that didn't work. Intresting, if the computer is not frozen, if I do ctrl+alt+f1 then it freezes
