Computer will randomly disconnect from internet and cant be reconnected again
Posted by: mhpr262 - 05-26-2021, 05:34 AM - Forum: Network - No Replies

I recently installed LinuxLite 3.8 32bit on an old ASUS EeePC with an 1.60GHz Intel CPU and 1GB of RAM. I use that netbook for seeding a bunch of torrents, some of them very large. Unfortunately my computer disconnects itself apparently randomly from the internet (it shows that sign with the two unconnected plugs and the red X in the panel instead of the four stepped bars) and keeps me from uploading. This happens like every 48-72 hours. It didn't do that with the Windows10 OS I had installed before Linux.

Its very annoying, first because I havent found any way to reconnect the computer to the net without restarting it and second because because it then takes a really long time to get all the torrents going again.

When the computer is disconnected nothing I can do in the panel seems to have any effect, neither clicking the symbol nor disabling or re-eabling Wi-Fi does anything. I know the problem is the computer, not the router or ISP because my other laptop has no issues staying connected to the internet at all.

I have just restarted it once again, it showed good connection (three out of four bars) but when I tried to download updates I was told that the computer wasnt connected to the internet. And even if I restart the panel sometimes still shows the "disconnected" symbol and I have to restart a second time.

Does anybody know what the problem could be? Please ELI5, I am extremely new to Linux.

  Hacking/improving Firefox performance
Posted by: Moltke - 05-25-2021, 01:31 PM - Forum: Tutorials - No Replies

Hi everyone! Hope you're all having a nice life!  :54:

For a few months now, I've been using Firefox in a daily basis, in fact, I'm writing this from it. Thing is, I noticed it kind of started to become slower, and then I'm back to chromium, which is my primary browser and IMHO it's a bit faster, but I do like some FF features, so I started searching for some "hacks", tips, tricks or whatever to try and see if I could improve its performance, and found this https://mastransky.wordpress.com/ though it's focused on Fedora's FF package, it does provide some good advice on tweaking Mozilla's browser to get the best out of it. So I read  most of the recent posts, tried some recommendations and am currently running FF with these settings:

Code:
# "plain" OpenGL
gfx.canvas.azure.accelerated (boolean) true
gfx.xrender.enabled (boolean) false #true conflicts with webrender
layers.accelerate-all (boolean) true
layers.acceleration.force-enabled (boolean) true

# WebRender
gfx.webrender.all (boolean) true
gfx.webrender.compositor (boolean) true
gfx.webrender.enabled (boolean) true

# VA-API
media.ffmpeg.dmabuf-textures.enabled (boolean) true
media.ffmpeg.vaapi.enabled (boolean) true
media.ffvpx.enabled (boolean) false
media.ffmpeg.low-latency.enabled false
media.navigator.mediadatadecoder_vpx_enabled false
media.rdd-ffvpx.enabled false
media.rdd-vpx.enabled false
widget.dmabuf-textures.enabled (boolean) true

To apply those, go to about:config in FF, click on I accept the risk message/warning and start typing in the search box each of the above, set the value to either True or False as appropriate, restart Firefox and that's it. After applying those, I've seen a significant improvement in FF's performance, for instance, when I clicked the X button, it took a while to close, now it doesn't and closes almost instantaneously  :003:  This is also another good source of info https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_de...x_problems

Well, I hope this helps someone else if having issues with FF's performance like I was  :55:

TLP for Laptops in Tweaks still recommended?
Posted by: icedigger - 05-24-2021, 12:34 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (1)

I'm curious if TLP is still recommended to be installed on laptops?

Older or newer or one or neither anymore?

Lenovo 13 AMD Laptop works flawlessly!
Posted by: icedigger - 05-23-2021, 02:39 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (1)

Just a heads up.  I get a lot of laptops in my shop and its hard to find one that works 100% or almost 100% with linux right off the bat.

Just wanted to let you know that the Lenovo 13 AMD Ryzen 4750 Pro works flawlessly with LL.

Even some of the dell ones they say are fully compatible are not but this beast is.

  Lite Core - Suggestions welcomed
Posted by: valtam - 05-22-2021, 11:10 PM - Forum: Linux Lite Software Development - Replies (34)

I am seriously considering doing this. Stripped down version of Lite where the user gets to choose:

Web browser
Email client
Firewall
Office Suite
Partitioner
PDF viewer
Media player
Photo editor
Photo manager
Scan software
Back up software
etc

Base files and drivers will stay intact as per usual - to ensure wide hardware compatibility.
Start up and shutdown as you could imagine are ridiculously quick.

Should I do this? Main Linux Lite release will remain unchanged.

how to update software not in repo
Posted by: timbuck2 - 05-22-2021, 12:50 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (9)

So youtube changed their api or something and the youtube-dl version in LL 5.4 (2020.03.24-1) doesn't work anymore.  This version is over a year old and out of date.  There is a new 2021.05.16 which is the current version.

How would I install this new version on my system when it is not in the repo provided by LL?  Do I have to uninstall the repo version and build the current version manually?  Any help would be appreciated.

Install a software keyboard in Linux Lite?
Posted by: gotLL - 05-21-2021, 09:05 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (1)

Hello,
I would like to try and use Linux Lite for an older PC dedicated to feeding a Television.
It would be cool to have a pop-up software keyboard that I could control via mouse.

I don't think Linux Lite comes with any software keyboard by default
I installed the Maliit software Keyboard - but can't figure out how to get it running.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance
