SOLVED?

I think I have found  an answer to my particular problem but still not sure what triggered the problem in the first place.
From posts elsewhere concerning blank screens on laptops after suspent etc - Light Locker was discussed .

My issue was slightly different , i.e desktop with CRT monitor.

I had previously explored the  Desktop display settings options to see whether they had any effect - no change.  i.e changing backround from blank to backround picture etc.

After the upgrade to 2.6 from 2.4,  I had adjusted the Power Manager  setting for monitor staged shut down, and I had recently added the pc suspend to the schedule.  This seemed to be working OK  without problems, but before the problem posted.
So I checked setting in Light Locker and found for some reason ( my action? Can't be sure) that “enable Light Locker slide button was set to on.  So disabled this and restarted -  Problem persisted.

So with the light locker still  unchanged to off  went to Application Autostart and unclicked liight locker  and then restarted.
Also went back into Application Autostart and Light Locker was no longer present as an added option - i.e it had been removed from the list of active start ups.

Success!!  Normal service resumed – Desktop display =  Black screen but with ICONS  - menu bar as before on bottom if screen.  The latter had always been present during the problem and functioned normally.

Not sure if this will be of help to others -  :)

Ok, sorry that didn't work. Must have a different root than my problem had. Perhaps switching resolution temporarily would jog something? Just stabbing at it, I'm new at this myself.

Tks Paul.
Tried your suggestion. Cut & pasted into terminal; return key and then terminal  went staright back to  " linuxlite@linuxlite-HP-Compaq-dc7700p-Ultra-slim-Desktop:~$
It did not ask me for password.
I then logged out and logged back on again.  Problem still the same
I then shut down , waited and then booted up again.  No change. :(

A nuisance more than a problem.  Have run updates etc regularly since  the original manifestation and no change :(

Loathe to back up now as problem would still be there on restoring.  So will have to live with it until version 2.8 perhaps or even the "Bite The Bullet" version 3.0

Hi,

I had a somewhat similar problem due to a corrupt browser install, and again when I renamed a thumb drive without unmounting it first (which is SOP in Windows...). I had a total black screen regarding wallpaper and icons, but all elements lit up when I opened, such as the Menu and all programs.

I found this solution for ubuntu which worked famously.

Open a terminal and simply run following command and then log out:

            rm -rf ~/.cache/sessions

Thanks.  For the first few days after the upgrade and subsequent updates, everything appeared as normal.  It is only in the last few days that the problem has occurred.    It is of nuisance value  more than critical..

Not sure where your upgrade to 2.6 went wrong. Just posting to provide info.

I upgraded this unit to 2.6 yesterday and upgraded kernel also to 4.2.
Noticed during the upgrade process that it starts out making backups first of files in /home and /etc/skel.

Just posting this to give other members who may have a idea on what you need to restore from those backups.
