Finally working
I used a 16G USB stick and Unetbootin to create the usb drive ( this was accomplished in a LL 2.2 system) and loaded
Linux Lite 2.6
I used the same file that created the 1G USB stick so apparently the usb stick size is important in the boot process

I still don't have my dlink usb wireless adaptor working yet.
Everything else is fine.  I liked LL2.2 and expect LL2.6 to be another fine system
Thanks to everyone who helped.

You didn't mention that your ISO download md5 sum checked out.

You don't need to partition the usb drive.

I tried again tonight error as follows

used LL in safe mode menu selection so I can see loads
stops with the following

mounting /dev/loop0 on //filesystem.squashfs failed Invalid argument
cannot mount loop0  (/cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs) on //filesystem.squashfs

and stops

I will have to get another larger usb stick and try again but I am interested in the reason for the error

I am working on two separate problems and posted in the wrong one by accident
I apologize for this error

I did download the LL 2.6 32 bit iso again and recreated a usb boot ;
I creted a ext 4 partition and formatted with FAT32 and then created using Unetbootin

the USB stick I used is only 1G but after completion I still had 159M of free space
this time it boots to menu but regardless of the selection chosen I get an error
loading loop0

I am retrying tonight so we will see

Are you still talking about making a live usb?  It feels like the topic changed.

The second is called make_inst_err  which is the output of make install

make error 1 and 2 I am unsure of even looking in the GNU make manual

I have in etc 1. the directory wireless   which is empty
                     2. the directory Wireless which has RT3070STA

From personal experience, in Linux Lite I use uNetBootin to create bootable usb media.  From Windows I used rufus (https://rufus.akeo.ie).  You can see how to use rufus here:

.

I would recommend that you make sure your *.iso file matches the MD5Sum numbers seen here: https://www.linuxliteos.com/download.html#current and that you use a 2GB or higher capacity USB drive.

I always had problems with unebootin; not sure why.  The  LL manual gives guidance  file:///usr/share/doc/litemanual/install.html#llusbwin

Also https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/installing-linux-lite/live-usb-stick-installs/msg12930/#msg12930  might be of help.

Not sure, but your usb flash drive seems small.  I think it's recommended to have at least a 2GB flash drive.

tried to create a usb live setup for testing
used UNetbootin to load the 2.6linux lite 32 bit iso on a 1G stick

when I boot it gives me an error
no default:

What did I do wrong

I used UNetbootin to create a Linux mint usb live cd and it worked fine ... boots and runs
