Thanks.  After I manually deleted much data from the hard drive the installation process did extend.  At one point the installation got hung up on creating user.  So after rebooting and not selecting to encrypt and including to do entire wipe I was successfully able to complete the installation.  Thank - you all for your assistance.  Now, I'm learning and hope I'll get acclimated with Linux Lite.  I don't know how to mark this thread closed, but can someone provide me with an easy link that will teach me easily how to Linux Lite can communicate with my Windows 10 computer.  I'd like for both computers to share files on my home network.  Again, thanks.

However, since Windows XP is outdated. I'd like to use Linux Lite.

It's old enough gear to be without UEFI or GPT stuff in it I would assume. But I have been mistaken before because of what a OP will leave out of a thread.

Here is a picture of my old Vista partition layout for kefir81 to check out. Mine is kinda special though as I have souped up the hardware on this old Single core vista Acer Aspire AST 180 Desktop machine. Windows is long gone by the way. It is just a Linux Lite box.

This was a wiped drive and a virgin install. After setting up your partitions <hint: pick the install to whole drive option and only run linux-lite in the installer>
Install grub to mbr. Not root file system. You'll be just fine and dandy.

I have posted my former Windows XP , now Linux-Lite 3 netbook screenshot. It has a single intel-atom N270 CPU and 1 gig of ram. LL-3 installed just fine and dandy on it. So that is a pretty low machine spec install.

Thanks again, and I'll take that as great news hence prior to making the dvd boot I didn't check.

However, I'd like to install the Linux Lite software to my computer as the permanent operating system.  I thought that would also eliminate afterwards having to use the DVD boot.

When I tried before I would get the original error message as well as something talking about a root not being available.

I created and saved a report if that would helpful to resolving the issues if you or anyone need it.  Thanks again.

You need to wipe your entire drive, search for guides on how to do this with gparted or maybe similar tools. This error you are seeing is because the drive isnt reporting partitions properly due to mbr/gpt conflicts. This is easily solvable by erasing the entire drive much like mentioned here http://akabaila.pcug.org.au/gpt/gpt_gparted.html and here https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2296149

It's not to uncommon, but understand you will be destroying all your data on said drive. If you need more instructions on this action I strongly suggest asking for help directly here, or at most opening a new thread describing the issues you might run into/the task you are attempting.

Curious why this error isn't considered in the code, seems logical to expect. In any case you can also open a report on unbutu's bug tracker for ubiquity.
The Truth is out there.
Be sure to check the Manual out and always report Bugs or feature requests.

When it matches. That means you got a good download and your iso is not corrupted. Which means that is one step that eliminates a source for problems.

You can now move over to the help manual and burn Dvd  or install to usb . Your choice. Using the help manual as you go. There are set of installation instructions in that link I gave.

Thanks torreysale.  I believe I've followed the tutorial as best as I could given that those websites have changed.  However after downloading the md5..., where do I get or how to I create the hash for linux-lite-3.2-32bit.iso ?

The MD5 checksum method should work with any *.iso (ie. image file) whether Ubuntu, Linux Lite, or otherwise.

Md5sum check the Linix Lite iso before trying to install. The Help manual link and the md5 link check using Windows XP should be enough to get you started.

Thanks, will this also work for linux-lite-3.2-32bit.iso because I don't think I downloaded unbuntu?

@ Richard B,

Thanks for your response.  However, overall I don't think I totally follow your suggestions and questions.

I'm not familiar with the "install image".  Within the BIOS settings I changed to boot from the DVD that has the Linux Lite on it.  Booting from the regular hard drive, I would assume is good although it's Windows XP.

However, since Windows XP is outdated. I'd like to use Linux Lite.  Once it boots from the dvd, I have four desktop icons:  Linux Lite 3.2, Floppy Disk, Install Linux Lite, and Menu.  Oh, and a "Welcome To Linux Lite" screen with various options displays too.

I figured that I'd like for Linux Lite to be a permanent operating system bypassing the need to boot from this DVD each time.  So, I thought the next step would be to "Install Linux Lite" , but unsuccessful.

Perhaps I missed some steps...

Hello Kefir81. Have you checked the install image? There is an option to do so on the boot menu. If OK I think the menu will re-appear after a while. If not, I presume you will get an error message. Also, is your hard drive good? Rather than going straight to Install, check it using (start menu)/Settings/Disks. The menu at the top (three dashes) leads you to "SMART date and self tests" which should show near the top something like "Overall assessment: Disk is OK".

Hope that helps.

Please help me, I'm a newbie.  Upon trying to install the software. I'm able to select the language, presented two options to select updating and installing third party, but the third process  I receive an Install crashed message that follows  (no drive appears either):

We're sorry; the installer crashed. After you close this window, we'll allow you to file a bug report using the integrated bug reporting tool. This will gather information about your system and your installation process. The details will be sent to our bug tracker and a developer will attend to the problem as soon as possible.
