Hi oldun.

After much experimenting, my workflow is simplicity itself (to me).

1-  I use Rapid Photo Downloader    http://www.damonlynch.net/rapid/
     Using this I can easy configure how and where to download the photos.
     I use the Year>month>day

2- I then use geeqie viewer     http://geeqie.sourceforge.net/
    This is in the Lubuntu  software centre.
    This is where I will rename folders and view images and do the first cull of obvious out of focus ,blurred etc images.

3- I then use darktable for most of my editing (this is not simple to learn though)
    So I would definitely recommend fotoxx, although quirky, very simple to use, once you are used to it.

I hope she sticks with LL and I,m sure she will find my  first 2 suggestions will do what she wants.

I really would like to understand such situations you are describing. As you are obviously not alone and there seem to be something that needs to be address from the Linux side. So if I may ask you please.

Are you assuming that a Linux distribution locks you down to a certain set of software that gets installed by default? Or are you missing a proper software center AND it's prominent promotion after the installation that makes you aware of the unbelievable amount of software out there that can be installed by a few clicks? Or is it too confusing to find the suitable software like a needle in a haystack?

As you like LL and don't want to switch back what is it that makes you think you might not have a choice?

I'm completely with Jerry. And I absolutely appreciate a very slick system to start with. That does not mean it will stay like that. No, I have tons of software installed I need and have hand picked. The beauty of LL is that it allows me to do that - without having to delete all kinds of pre-installed software I don't need and want.
So I definitely opt for staying slick, but maybe there needs to be more info out there for (Windows?) people who think that's all they get with LL.

If just looking for a Picture Preview - similar to the minimalistic Windows view??
Linux Lite does come with 'Image Viewer" it shows thumbs along the left side and it will Slide Show similarly as well...

The other comments in this thread already mentioned gthumb and shotwell as photo manager options.  They can both be installed via Install/Remove Software (Menu, System, Install/Remove Software).  Or you can just copy and paste the following in a terminal:

If gthumb and shotwell do not provide enough editing options, an alternative to GIMP would be Pinta.  It can also be installed using Install/Remove Software or by copying and pasting the following:

Lastly, it sounds like you and your friend are aware that there are a lot of tools out there, but you don't know the names of them.  In addition to coming to this forum, I suggest two things.  First Web searching what you're looking for.  In this case, a simple search on the terms "photo manager Linux" led to some good options.  Secondly, a graphical software center might help.  For the people I've introduced to LL, I've installed the Lubuntu Software Center.  There is an entire category for Graphic software packages, and all of the programs are free.  The Lubuntu Software Center can be installed via Install/Remove Software or by copying and pasting the following:

This is an area where my friend has difficulty.    She downloads all the shots from her camera and ends up with a conglomeration of pictures and so can't find the one she wants.    I put her on LL when I saw a review in Micromart and for the simple office type things and email and facebook she has happily been using it for a couple of years - manages LL better than she did W7.    However, photos cause her a huge problem.    In W7 she could use the manufacturers software to do simple editing and some form of organising the originals - often just by date but she managed.    The Gimp is far too powerful for her and she is starting to suggest that I put her back on  Windows.     I don't want to because with the exception of photos she manages quite well on her own and I only have to do occasional things  like updating LL for her.     She needs something to deal with her camera pictures please.

Don't have a preference to which photo editor to use.* If one or more is offered, agree that should be by Installed Additional Software.

* This, greeting cards, and my wife's e-mail is all I still use on my iMac.

Yep , that would be a great idea ( gThumb ) but in the Install Additional Softwares .

You could argue that LL is 'lacking' a lot of things, but you wouldn't get far because it's deliberately minimal. What we are open to is software suggestions that have wide appeal. Let's see what the community thinks of this. Cheers

In my opinion  LL is lacking a photo organizer/manager such as gThumb,Shotwell or similar.
This could be part of the main menu or at least part of the "install additional software"

This would be useful for users migrating from windows. As most must have a shed load of digital images.

My preference is gThumb.
