Problem Installing Updates using GUI
#1
When I click on 'Install Updates' in the Menu I get the following error message: 'couldn't fetch the package cache information lists'
Is there a way of fixing this?

When the above happens (which is always at the moment) I use the terminal instead and type:

Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Is that sufficient, or do I need to have the command 'install' somewhere in that code?

Thanks for your help
Mike
64bit OS (32-bit on Samsung[i] netbook) installed in [i]Legacy mode on MBR-formatted SSDs (except pi which uses a micro SDHC card):
2017 - Raspberry pi 3B (4cores) ~ Arm710@1.2GHz - LibreElec, used for upgrading our Samsung TV (excellent for the task)
2012 - Lenovo G580 2689 (2cores; 4threads] ~ i3-3110M@2.4GHz - LL3.8/Win8.1 dual-boot (LL working smoothly)
2011 - Samsung NP-N145 Plus (1core; 2threads) ~ Intel Atom N455@1.66GHz - LL 3.8 32-bit (64-bit too 'laggy')
2008 - Asus X71Q (2cores) ~ Intel T3200@2.0GHz - LL4.6/Win8.1 dual-boot, LL works fine with kernel 4.15
2007 - Dell Latitude D630 (2cores) ~ Intel T7100@1.8GHz - LL4.6, works well with kernel 4.4; 4.15 doesn't work

Delete that log file, run Install Updates from the Menu, then repost the new log.

The above was done, PC rebooted, but I still get the same message 'couldn't fetch the package cache information lists'
when I click on 'Install Updates' in Menu.

Even if you don't use or have Chrome...
Have you run the commands:
Code:
sudo sed -i -e 's/deb http/deb [arch=amd64] http/' "/etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list"
sudo sed -i -e 's/deb http/deb [arch=amd64] http/' "/opt/google/chrome/cron/google-chrome"
((The 2nd command will error if you don't have Chrome, ignore))

Still waiting for you to repost the new log as requested. Cheers.

@wirezfree...
After doing the quoted bit you suggested above, I rebooted, clicked on 'install updates' and didn't get the Error Message -
instead I got the more normal 'No Updates Available' with the green tick , suggesting the alternative updating method
that I'd used (i.e. command line using terminal) had done its job. Thanks very much Dave.

I've checked but no new llupdates.log file has been created.  Presumably this is because
LL is already up to date, as mentioned immediately above to wirezfree. However,
I will check the llupdates.log the next time it updates using GUI.

Thanks guys - the above was really helpful.
Cheers
