Steps to re-create:
Upgraded from 3.4 to 3.6, rebooted.
1. I created user 'bob'
2. I gave bob a simple password - 123456
3. I changed bobs password to $*=12ab
4. I logged out my current user and logged in as bob using the new password.
I used the characters you listed so I'm unsure as to why yours did not work.
