  Mouse pointer size change
Posted by: dadd333 - 06-13-2014, 05:04 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (5)

How in the devil do you change the mouse pointer size and possibly the color? The size change is necessary as I am almost 73 and that miniature pointer is a pain in the petard!!!

[SOLVED] Strange messages lines in dmesg
Posted by: Scaniatrucker - 06-13-2014, 03:59 PM - Forum: Sound - Replies (2)

Hello. Today, 2014-06-13, i installed Linux Lite 2.0, and i am very happy with Linux Lite 2.0. I use usb headset CM 108 audio controller (Steelseries 5H V2). In dmesg i see this lines "retire_playback_urb: 832 callbacks suppressed". What this lines means? Is this critical? By the way, sound work good.

  Canon MX870 Printer driver problems.
Posted by: mountainhick - 06-12-2014, 10:25 PM - Forum: Printing and Scanning - Replies (6)

I (thought) I installed correct drivers for a Canon MX870 printer. When adding the printer to print manager trying to print didn;t work, so I added a second instance of the printer in the print manager and it printed a couple files. After a couple restarts, nothing, can't print a thing. I tried to (re)install other drivers based on this: http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2013...inux-mint/

Doesn't work. The job loads into the print manager, then just hangs up and nothing prints.

Seems best to just completely remove drivers and start over, but I have no idea how to do this.

  Greetings from Texas!
Posted by: douglas - 06-12-2014, 01:36 AM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (3)

Greetings all.  My name is Douglas and I have been using Linux for over a decade.  I started with RedHat Linux 8 (before Fedora and RHES).  I have mainly used Debian derivates for many years now, using Arch for spells here and there.  Mint has served me well until recently, the latest version seems kind of slow and freezes sometimes... so I started looking around.  I read several glowing reviews of Lite 2.0, much more polished than 1.0.  So I gave it a try, so far I really like it.  I will stick with it for a while.

  A belated hello
Posted by: brewerz - 06-11-2014, 09:41 PM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (5)

Greetings from Wisconsin!  8)

Over the past 15 or so years, I have been a pure IT manager and watched my UNIX/Linux/BSD/etc. skills fade.  I used to be quite proficient in system admin work, writing Perl scripts, etc.  For a while, I thought FreeBSD was the end all/be all of operating systems, particularly for servers.

With Microsoft's recent sunset of Windows XP support and my owning several older PC's that still seem to have plenty of life in them, I started to look at lite distros.  I initially decided to install Lubuntu on one of my old PC's and was amazed at how simple it was to install.  I was hooked (again) on the freedom, tweakability, speed, innovation, etc. of an open source operating system.  I “binge” installed several distros including Elementary, Zorin, Puppy, PCLinuxOS, SolydX, etc.  Each of them have a lot of strengths and breathed life into my old PC's.  But for whatever reason -- whether it was the video resolution, WiFi connectivity, detecting hardware, general error messages, UI, or whatever else -- I wasn't completely happy.  Maybe I have some strange hardware configurations.  Plus, I'm a musician and wanted to try Ardour as a new DAW alternative to my older Windows-based packages.  Unfortunately, not all of my audio hardware was recognized by several distros and there were usually some other audio issues.

Then I discovered Linux Lite.  It installed quickly, recognized all of my hardware and just worked!

I'm not entirely sure why Linux Lite doesn't get more great reviews & props because I have found it to be just about perfect for my needs.  It has just the right balance of ease of use, great hardware detection, awesome speed & performance, selection of pre-installed apps, aesthetics, tweakability, etc.  And this support forum has been a great way to get answers to questions.

I've already told several family members and coworkers that Linux is no longer a black box with a mysterious question mark on it.  It is ready for prime time use by every day users.  And the distro that I recommend, based on looking at several, is Linux Lite.

HUGE thanks and props to Valtam and the rest of the LL developers for creating an absolutely fantastic distro!  And thanks for supporting this support forum!

A Question Regarding Linux Lite for different Purpose
Posted by: protocol77 - 06-11-2014, 06:20 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (5)

Hey guys it has been a while since i have been on here i have just had life stuff to deal with (you know how that goes) anyways last time i was on here i was using i think 1.06 and i found Linux lite to be on par with Lubuntu as my two favourite linux distro's not just because they are light fast and responsive but also because being a Windows Guy and coming to Linux as a Noob i found them to be the most user friendly.

Now back then because of all the pre-installed stuff and the cool scripts you setup Linux lite did have a slight edge as my favourite but last night in stalled 2.0 in a Virtualbox VM on my Windows 8.1 computer and holy crap this has blown everything else out of the water for me it is just fantastic i like the minimal white look reminds I like things clean and simple none of all that flashy crap that drags down performance you can tell this has been designed for performance and the script setup is even better being able to install almost 30 different application by simply pressing the corresponding number is brilliant i setup teamviewer, xbmc, and chromium and it just saved time and effort having to type these commands in i did have an issue where i had to run an update before i could install some of these but not a big issue was going to update after they were installed anyways

anyways enough blowing smoke I love the new version i am gonna recommend it to people i know who have just had their expired Windows XP computers and looking to upgrade or change

What i was curious about was I would like to learn how to setup a Linux Home File Server but don't want to spend a week learning the commands in just a terminal and not a big fan of Webmin so was thinking seeing as my current server is simply running Windows 7 SP1 why not switch that for Linux Lite i will still have the ease of use of a GUI but it will be hopefully a Lot lighter on resources and also more secure from viruses seeing as a Internet Connection will be on also want to run 24/7 so was wondering if Linux lite would be stable enough to run 24/7 for weeks or possible month on end serving up files and downloading off Usenet (I plan to use NZBDrone and Sabnzbd)

How do I use LXDE desktop?
Posted by: Al1000 - 06-10-2014, 09:27 PM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (1)

Thought I'd give it a try to see what it's like, so installed it from Package Manager. Everything seemed to go ok, but I can't get to the stage where the menu offering a choice of desktops appears, as I understand it's supposed to appear, before the login screen. The only thing that's different is that the screen briefly flashes white, immediately before the login screen appears, which I assume is when the menu is supposed to appear. Someone on another forum suggested that my problem might be down to auto login being enabled, but trying to disable it using the option in the Menu results in an error. I tried following the advice on this page:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/62833/how...uto-logins

...but there is no lightdm.config in /etc/lightdm , and typing:

Code:
sudo /usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm-set-defaults -s LXDE

...results in:

Code:
linuxlite-al@linuxliteal-System-Product-Name:~$ sudo /usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm-set-defaults -s lxde
[sudo] password for linuxlite-al:
sudo: /usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm-set-defaults: command not found

I have manually edited .dmrc in the Home folder so that it reads:

Code:
[Desktop]
Session=LXDE

...then rebooted the computer, but the desktop looks the same. It's not that I am in any way unhappy with it as it is, just that I'm keen to try things out that I haven't tried before.

I realise I began this by trying to get the menu to appear, then tried to get LXDE to appear automatically, but I'm really just looking for a way to get it working; although having a menu with a choice of desktops would be ideal.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

  get_iplayer File Format
Posted by: AL13N - 06-10-2014, 11:18 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (1)

A heads-up for anyone looking to install the get_iplayer application.

Installing get_iplayer via the Synaptic Package Manager (Install/Remove Software) resulted in downloads being saved to .flv format.

Installing via PPA* resulted in downloads being saved to .mp4 and .m4a (AAC) formats for video and audio respectively.

Either Synaptic Package Manager is not automatically installing additional dependencies required for encoding, or the get_iplayer version in Ubuntu repositories is out of date or broken.

If you are both downloading and watching/listening on your computer then this is not a problem - VLC and other media players will play .flv files.

But if you plan on playing the downloads elsewhere (TV, mobile devices) then the .mp4/.m4a formats are much more widely supported.
