| Lost internet connection |

I am pushing 80 so I am writing this offline because I am concerned it makes sense and I want it to reread it before posting.
First of all. I have an older laptop that I use, it has 2 partition, one is Windows 7 and it seems to be OK. The other is Linux Lite. It is an older version but I can't find a version number, I would say a couple years old.
A couple of years ago I began to have cognitive difficulties and modified Linux Lite desktop so there would as few icons in other words I change the program icons by removing the icon and making the title something meaningful to me.
At some point I realized that I had lost my connection to the internet. In working on that I realized that I have a connection to the local router and I can see all of the other computers in my comcast community.
However, I cannot go to the browser and put in a URL and get a connection. I do have a simple website on my personal network. That I connect with.
It sound to me as if I have problem connecting with a DNS server. I have tried several URL's for DNS servers.
None of which worked.
If you want to help me keep in mind that I have to read and reply on one partition and test on another.
Thanks to anyone who can provide any help I would prefer step by step instructions.
Jim

I installed LL6.2 on a Dell Inspiron 15-3565 notebook. On first boot, the Network icon was on the taskbar and I was able to select a wifi network and log into it. After running updates and doing some internet browsing, I noticed the network icon disappeared. I cannot find a way to access the available wifi list to change networks if necessary. I tried rebooting several times but the icon is still gone. Any ideas on how to get it back?
Thanks

| How to do a full legacy-bios install onto USB stick from live desktop shortcut. |

I have created booted a persistent linux lite live USB on a legacy bios computer by using Rufus and the live ISO, and very much like what I see. . Many thanks to all involved!
I would now like to install Linux Lite fully but:

on a 32Gb USB stick not a hard disk. (It is currently formatted in one partition as Ext4).

to run on my legacy bios computer, not on a UEFI computer.
I have followed your clear instructions regarding how to fully install on a legacy bios computer from the Linux Lite Live desktop installation link, but am somewhat confused regarding what to do after selecting an Install Type of 'Something Else'. I don't want to risk over-writing my Windows boot hard disk or related data disk (though all my data is backed up and I have disk clone), nor disconnect my hard disk as I might mess the hardware up!.
Assuming I know how to identify my target USB in partitioning table (I do!), will it work OK, and not over-write either of my hard disks, if I do the following in the sequence indicated:
- Using the Device for Bootloader Installation drop-down, select my target USB as the destination for the boot loader
- In the Installation Type, Device/Partitions list, select and choose to change my target USB, formatting it again (to make sure!) with a single Ext4 partition and mount point of '/'
- In the Installation Type, Device/Partitions list, click on my target USB - the whole device not the partition - so it is highlit. (I note that if you don't do this it seems to revert to highlighting the main hard disk after changing the target USB).
- Press Continue
I assume in the above that the target medium for the installation of all items (apart from the bootloader) is the disk that is highlit, is that true? Also that the installer knows that I am on a legacy bios machine and so will install the right boot sector.
I have checked the manual and forum for help on this exact topic and not found it. This approach to doing an install to USB looked promising and very safe, though it does not use the Lite Live desktop shortcut. But it seems to be about creating a persistent live usb install, not a full install, and does not mention the legacy bios issue. My apologies if I have missed something. I have also checked the posting guidelines and realize that the Lite Live desktop installation shortcut wizard may not have been programmed by Linux Lite, but as a newbie I am not sure how to tell.
Any help you can give will be much appreciated. It is my first post, so please forgive any infelicities.
Kind regards
Mouse1

| No Wifi after install of 6.2 |

Dear All,
I have just installed Linuxlite 6.2 on my pals aged laptop a Lenovo G580 with an i3 processor and 8G Ram.
The wifi is a Broadcom BCM4313 802.11bgn Wireless Network Adapter
No wifi network is showing up on the networking taskbar. When I checked in the Software and Updates section to see if I could install a driver it appears that it is already using Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver source from kernel bcmwl-kernel-source (proprietary).
The wifi worked fine when booting from the Linuxlite USB but after the installation I have to connect an ethernet cable to the router. Any ideas on how to sort this out would be very welcome.
I am familiar with using terminal commands but this is my first go at using Linuxlite.

Our in-house applications are starting to be repackaged using ZSTD compression for significantly faster decompression speeds and higher compression rates.
Example:
Lite Themes - old compressed package: 91.2mb

This will benefit machines from a wider range of ages. Great for slower computers when installing updates, lightning fast updates for modern machines.

Installation
How do I know if my Windows PC has UEFI?
In Windows Search, type msinfo or msinfo32 and launch the desktop app named System Information. Look for the BIOS Mode item, and if the value for it is UEFI, then you have the UEFI firmware. If it says BIOS Mode Legacy, then that’s the firmware you’re running.
Secure Boot is supported, but unless you know exactly how to handle it, it is a P.I.T.A. at best so I am going to say...you must disable Secure Boot to enable stress free computing.
Some helpful snippets from the latest Help Manual:

Details:
Kernel: 5.15.0-60 ( custom kernels also available via our Repository for versions 3.13 - 6.2 )
Chrome: 110.0
Thunderbird: 102.7.1
LibreOffice: 7.4.5
VLC: 3.0.16
Gimp: 2.10.30
Base: 22.04.2
Known Issues:
Eject Media prompt is only available at the end of the UEFI install.
Desktop icons - English support only.
Dropbox: if you get an error, run the set up twice.
There is NO Grub Edit in Lite Tweaks in this Series for Linux Lite due to an unsolvable issue. Ubuntu will show in the Grub menu if you are dual or more booting. Try Grub Customizer if it annoys you.
Grub menu shows Linux Lite as 'Ubuntu'. See below for more on this.
- Open /etc/default/grub as Administrator.
- Comment out: GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian` and leave GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR='Linux Lite' uncommented.
- Should look like:
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR='Linux Lite'
#GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
- sudo update-grub
Grub - press the ESC key whilst booting in UEFI mode after your BIOS has posted. Use the SHIFT key if running Linux Lite in Legacy mode.
Help Manual will be updated in the Final.
OEM Install option - is broken and crashes near the end of the install. If a fix can't be found, it will be excluded from each release until a solution if found.
Other Issues
You tell me.
There is no upgrade to or from RC releases. RC releases are for testing only and it is not recommended to run them as your main or secondary operating system.

Login is automatic, no credentials are required. The image can be written to a 4gb or larger USB stick, or a writable DVD. Alternatively, you can use the dd command: sudo dd if=linux-lite-6.4-rc1-64bit.iso of=/dev/sdx bs=4M where 'x' is the letter of your usb stick. In linux to find out the letter of your usb stick, open a terminal and type: df -h It is usually listed as 'media' or similar. Please see the built in Help Manual if you require a more detailed explanation of this procedure.
A good, simple point and click USB ISO burner is https://www.balena.io/etcher/ or https://rufus.ie/
In our testing, Etcher and Rufus (for Windows only) have proven to be the most reliable. Etcher is available for Mac, Windows & Linux.
If the screen locks during Live mode, type linux into the user box and click on the Login button (no password required)
Minimum Recommended Specs:
1Ghz processor
768mb ram
8gb HDD/SD
VGA screen capable of 1024x768 resolution
DVD drive or USB port for the ISO image

1024mb ram+
20gb HDD/SSD+
VGA, DVI or HDMI screen capable of 1366x768 resolution+
DVD drive or USB port for the ISO image
Login to the live desktop is automatic.
The first thing you MUST do after a fresh install of Linux Lite is run Menu, Favorites, Install Updates.
As this is a RC release, there are bound to be bugs etc. Please help make the final stable for other people by participating in this RC. Please report any bugs and feedback in this thread.
Thank you
Jerry and the team.
