Russian government to switch to Linux
Posted by: paul1149 - 02-11-2016, 01:38 PM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (1)

[size=1.35em]Does LL have a Russian edition? Probably talking about 100s of thousands of workstations.[/size]

[size=1.45em]Putin's internet guru says 'nyet' to Windows, 'da' to desktop Linux[/size]
11 Feb 2016 at 07:38, [color=rgb(0, 114, 122)]Shaun Nichols[/color]
The Russian government says it is looking to dump Microsoft and adopt Linux as the operating system for agency PCs.
In an [color=rgb(221, 0, 0)]interview[/color] with Bloomberg, Russian internet advisor German Klimenko said the state will consider moving all of its networks off the Microsoft platform and onto an unspecified Linux build instead.
Citing Microsoft's capitulation to the US government in honoring sanctions against Russia, Klimenko said that the Redmond software giant had reached the "point of no return" with Moscow and that 22,000 government agencies and municipal offices were prepared to drop Windows right now.
"It's like a wife seeing her husband with another woman – he can swear an oath afterward, but the trust is lost," Klimenko was quoted as saying.
Elsewhere in the interview, Klimenko promised to place additional taxes on goods sold by Microsoft, as well as Apple and other foreign companies who do business in Russia. He also slammed Google for what he sees as working with the US government in what he called a "threat to national security."
It should probably be noted that Microsoft itself isn't exactly [color=rgb(221, 0, 0)]best buddies[/color] with the US intelligence community either these days.
This is not the first time a government has mulled dropping Microsoft in favor of Linux. Nations around the world have at [color=rgb(221, 0, 0)]various[/color] [color=rgb(221, 0, 0)]times[/color] considered the idea of moving away from Redmond in favor of Linux.
Meanwhile, over in the US and UK, Windows is so entrenched that some agencies are [color=rgb(221, 0, 0)]still relying[/color] on their XP boxes and even [color=rgb(221, 0, 0)]paying Microsoft[/color] to provide them with extended support.

  Auto log off?
Posted by: dboxall123 - 02-11-2016, 10:44 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (1)

Hello everyone,

I've recently installed the latest Linux Lite (haven't been at my computer for quite a while - it's changed a hell of a lot!). Anyway, there is something really annoying happening. If I leave my computer alone for like 5-10 mins, it logs me out. Even if I'm watching a film or trying to download something. Then I have to log back in, and my download has failed. Have to start again. How do I switch this off? I never want to have to log in again, I don't want to have to keep touching the mouse every couple of mins just to download something or watch a film.

Any help will be appreciated,
dboxall123

Your password required for other users sudo

I am a windows user that just got a PC with no OS and I installed Linux Lite. In windows, you have UAC and on other users which are not an administrator it will ask you for the administrator password. Is it possible to enable that in Linux Lite as I have a non-trustable little brother.

  Latest Linux Lite 2.8 Desktop

Xfce theme - tish
Icons - Numix-Circle-Light
Font - Droid Sans 10
Conky - Green Apple Desktop Widget
Wallpaper - from Wallhaven 235412.jpg

Compositing is turned on and I fiddled with transparency to make things feel lighter/modern. The bottom is not a launcher, but just a modified panel.  I centered it and added a transparent background with 64 pix icons.  Whisker at the top left and Applications and Directory down low on the "launcher".

  Update lists not working
Posted by: glin22 - 02-10-2016, 04:09 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (12)

Hi folks,

There is some kind of problem happening when I try to update...I get the following errors -

Reading package lists... Error!
E: Problem parsing dependency Breaks
E: Error occurred while processing samba-libs (NewVersion2)
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

I tried removing the old lists by doing -

sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* -vf
sudo apt-get update

so the cache would update but I still get the above errors, I tried rebooting a bunch of times but that didn't help either.

Any ideas on this ?

  Slimjet browser won't open
Posted by: paul1149 - 02-10-2016, 02:36 AM - Forum: Installing Software - Replies (6)

I've been using Slimjet, a Chromium derivative, on LL x64 for several months with very few and minor problems. Suddenly, with version 7.0.3, the program won't open. I've tried every version since (including today's 7.0.7) with the same results. So I end up going back to 7.0.1, which works fine.

The Slimjet dev told me to use the tar.bz installer, but that didn't go well either (I don't really know what I'm doing, which could be the problem). So I'm stuck.

I set up a virtual box of LL 2.8 x32 (the only bittage I can run on this machine in virtual box), and there Slimjet ran perfectly. So obviously something's wrong with this install. I can sit this out until LL 3.0 comes out and do a fresh install, but I'd rather nail it now, the browser being so important.

I noticed that when I fire up Slimjet several processes open for a couple of seconds and then close. The are named systemd-udevd. Any thoughts on this would be welcome. Thanks.

  Extremely slow file operations?
Posted by: mandoran - 02-09-2016, 05:23 PM - Forum: Other - No Replies

I'm not sure I've given this the best name, but the problem has dogged me through LL 2.4 and I am hoping that it will not on my next upgrades. Meanwhile I am curious to know if this is a known issue with a solution.

What I mean by file operations is whenever software goes to a file explorer (say Thunar) in order to save, rename, open, find or otherwise handle a file. For me this takes ages, across software programs. Libre Office, browsers, whatever, if I have to summon a view to execute a file operation the file display does not open for 5-10 seconds. I was shocked by how long it actually takes, I've gotten used to it and never checked just how long the delay is.

What could be causing this?

  Cloud Print - Remote print
Posted by: firenice03 - 02-09-2016, 01:20 AM - Forum: Tutorials - Replies (3)

Well after wiping out, beta testing and tweaking for 2.8 I had to set up cloud print again on the Mini (netbook) and thought I'd share my notes.. Should anyone be interested or have interest.. Yes this is a Google feature and does require a gmail account..

The main focus is adding the cloud printers into Linux Lite on a remote system where the printer is not attached. Making the cloud printers (printers attached elsewhere) available within the LL printers windows; which is accomplished via CUPS.

A quick note; I found this info out in the great beyond of Google searches.. You do have to add a PPA - understand what this means prior to installing...

1st off  Cloud Print needs to be set up.. Having a system (Windows/Linux etc) with a printer attached/installed, then within Chrome/Chromium that printer added to the Cloud Printer section.. (I can expand on more but went with the assumption most can accomplish)
*Cloud Print can also make these printers available to Android tablets/phones as well... (Probably iOS stuff too but I don't use  :o)
*Not only do you have access to your printer, but a PDF printer along with a "printer" to add to Google Drive...

Now adding the printer to Linux Lite (other flavors too)..
The below commands need to be ran one at time to add CUPS Cloud Print.

Code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:simon-cadman/niftyrepo

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install cupscloudprint

After installing CUPS Cloud Print, the command below will create a CUPS printer for each Google Cloud Print printer on your account.
If this is the first time you are installing CUPS Cloud Print, you will be prompted to allow CUPS Cloud Print to print using your account.

Code:
sudo /usr/share/cloudprint-cups/setupcloudprint.py

Basically this command is prompting for your gmail address..
Then it will prompt you to go to a URL - If your already logged into Chrome/Chromium copy and paste (if your not you will be prompted to log in), it will respond with a "Key"..
Enter this key into the ternimal prompt, Thus allowing CUPS to print to the account..

After which you are prompted if you wish to add all cloud printers (I typically say yes but can be customized)
Lastly a prompt; asking if you want to add a prefix to the printer names.
*May want to add if you already have other local printers attached - i.e. "CP-" to differentiate cloud printers

All done - Printers folder will be updated.
You'll be able to print from any app as you would if it was local; LibreOffice, Leafpad, Firefox etc.

This makes it easy to share printers across locations - maybe not so much in one room.
But does allow easy integration with multi-devices (Android, PC - Linux/Windows etc)
Additionally I can print to my in-laws printer - great for that "how do I" moment or should I need something right from my device.

  Hi all

I've been a PC user since the 5150, and PCDOS 1.0.  Been a Windows guy most of the time.  I spent 20 years in corporate IT.    I dabbled in Ubuntu/Linux Mint for a while around the time Windows Vista came out.  After Win 8/10 it was finally time to bail on Windows.  I've DL'd and tried most of the popular distros and now I think I've found the best one for me - Lite 2.8.  Thanks to Jerry and everyone who contributed to such a great OS.

Posted by: thinman - 02-08-2016, 05:04 PM - Forum: Network - Replies (5)

i'm just done with my prior inquiries on remote connection, and here i am again asking help if there are GUI windows for IPv4 connection settings, as well, proxy settings in Linux Lite  :-\

i mean i'm more expose to Ubuntu in which if i add proxy, i just go to this window:

[img height=357 width=800]http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p553/geekbuy/proxy_zpseg8bnrhw.png[/img]

and if i put static IP or DNS, i also go on these window:

likewise, hoping also you can share the command lines both for IPv4 connection settings and proxy if i go or use to the terminal  :-[
