Forum: Installing Linux Lite

I installed Linux Lite 3.0 successfully on my DELL Inspiron 5559 alongside Windows 10 and it is working great. I noticed the entry in the grub menu looked strange, it had the word *Description: in the menu, it looked like...

Quote:*Description:    Linux Lite 3.0 GNU/Linux

But it was working ok so I'm not too bothered about the name as long as it works. I then decided to also install Xubuntu alongside LL3 so I could use both over next few weeks to determine any differences.

Xubuntu is now the default OS in grub menu with an entry for Linux Lite 3.0 beneath as I expected (minus the word *Description: ). Xubuntu is working ok but when I select LL3 I get an error message that says "a filename was expected".

I had a look on google and found this similar incident ....
https://www.linuxliteos.com/forums/insta...d-distros/

... where gold_finger suggested

1. Boot computer with live Linux Lite USB

2. Mount the Linux Lite root partition

3. Install grub to the MBR of sda drive

4. Boot computer normally again and Linux Lite should first (default) choice in grub menu, and other OS further down menu.

So I tried this and it worked for me also, so thanks to gold_finger for such an easy solution.

Is there any way to avoid this happening again in the future, or is this the best workaround? It's no big deal, I just wondered if I could avoid the same thing happening again.

I have a Acer netbook (Intel Atom/1 gb.) that I have installed Linux Lite 3.0 x32 on & in autostart have turned off bluetooth/Print Queue/Systemback scheduler, as I do not need them. Is there anyone who is using LL 3.0 on a netbook, or who can make suggestions, on how to speed it up. No complaints about Linux Lite. Netbooks are cheap, low end items. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I would not say it runs terrible, I am just looking for any ideas to 'make it a bit better'. Thanks once again to everyone.

I have an MSI L1350D Notebook that has a 10" screen of 1024x600 resolution & it also has an external monitor port from which I run a Phillips 17" 1280x1024 monitor.
The Phillips 17" is used as the main monitor with the notebook's monitor disabled.
Just had a thunderstorm roll through & was half way into installing an OS in Virtualbox & the power went out.
As the main monitor was on external power it also went out, the notebook runs via it's own battery when mains power goes out so it was still powered on ok but had no display working so I couldn't do anything with it.

Is there a way to access/start a disabled monitor if the main monitor loses power?
Function keys don't seem to work unfortunately, which would be great if they did as they're supposed to toggle between running either external monitor or built in monitor or both, but regardless if they're both set to being used or not in Display settings nothing happens when the Fn switch combination is pressed.

I can run them both at once but it causes issues with screen tearing, video playback etc. & I was wondering if anyone knows a way to start a disabled monitor if the main monitor goes down for some reason.
Once a monitor has been disabled the only way to enable it again that I know of is using another monitor to view things & change the settings again, ok if there's power to both but useless if one is disabled & the other has no power.
Booting into a live distro both monitors will work provided they have power & the original notebook monitor works regardless as it's on battery, but to get there from the above scenario it leaves the problem of improper shutdown & any unsaved work before the power down will most likely be lost.

The Java Web Applet Plugin was previously available through LL2.8's Lite Software app.
I notice it's absent from LL3.0's Lite software: is there a reason for this, e.g. does it pose a
security risk, like Adobe Flashplayer, or is it already integrated into the LL3.0 package?

Hello all, 1st time user of this distro and am pleasantly surprised at its simplicity and software compatibility.I am past user of all the Linux Mint versions, Debian, OpenSuse, Arch, and the list goes on.  However, this distro is at the top of my list.

Hello All, new to this distro and need help placing the Title Bar at the top of the screen instead of at the default bottom. Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure this is the right place to ask this question, if not, let me know. I'm trying to load Fender Fuse into wine, but it requires Microsoft silverlight to run. When I try to load it asks to install silverlight. When I go thru the process it loads silverlight, but aborts Fuse. Is there a way to load a program that requires another dependent program? I'm running LL 2.8 and I love it. Any help would be appreciated.

I have downloaded Zsnes and Sega retro Gens, when i connect my controller it acts as a mouse. The mouse pointer on the desktop screen moves with the use of the controller and not withing the start menu of the Emulator.
