Forum: Installing Linux Lite

Hi guys Im pretty new to thhis distro and I fell in love with it after a month.

Im not an experienced linux user and I learnt hard way why dd is refereed to as "disk destroyer'.....
My issue started, when I tried dd-ing an iso on ll3 and instead of sdb i set it to sda.
After hours of fails I managed to boot Lubuntu from my android and installed it.

Now every time I try to install LL3 I get the following message on starting live session from usb(and phone):

(initframs) mount: mounting /dev/loop1 (cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs) on //filesystem.squashfs failed: no usch device

After that If I type exit in busybox it will continue to setup and end up in kernel panic and just freeze.

Things I tried:
1.Re-downloading iso's  and checking md5sum (always the same md5)
2.Formating the usb to fat/fat32 and using Unetbootin (fails on initframs)
3.Trying to boot from Android (drivedroid app) (fails on initframs)
4.Disconnecting everything except ethernet, keyboard and usb (fails on initframs)
5.dd-ing it to usb (fails on initframs)
6.Trying 32bit (fails on initframs)
7.Changing usb's (fails on initframs)
8.Trying 2.8 (fails on initframs)
9. Using recommended gtk usb maker on both lite 3.0 and 2.8 (fails on initframs)

I had no issues before launching live session from usb,but since I dd my whole HDD I cant (Had to create all new partition table and whip it clean) .
I read that this usually happens when md5 is off, when usb is out of mem, when there isnt enough ram.... but everything is fine (I have a gig of ram,8gb usb,md5 is consistent...).
I managed even to live boot Kubuntu, but not Lite.....

Id really like if someone could help me out as this is by far the best "legacy" distro and I got used to it very much (kernel is a beauty)!

After not be able to install 3.0 on one of my machines I decided to see how well it performs on a external hard drive

First I try installing 3.0 and for some reason when I installed Google Chrome and open it I have a line across the middle of the screen faded but I can see it odd

I didn't know what to make of it because I don't have issues like this on any other device. So I also install Chromium and had the same problem

I then decide to remove Lite 3.0 and install 2.8, no issues with using the Google Chrome browser of Chromium. Anyone have any idea's what might be the problem with 3.0? and Google Chrome and Chromium

Thanks so much for any help with this I would really like to install Lite 3.0 if I could

This tutorial is specific to enabling a remote Linux Lite 3.0 Secure Shell on another wifi connected Linux computer utilizing Remmina. Remmina works well on most modern Debian based and/or Ubuntu based Linux distros. I will be using a Solydx laptop, a similar Debian based XFCE distro a little less hybrid and a little less compatible with Ubuntu than Linux Lite, but suitable for the purposes of this tutorial.

To begin open a terminal in Linux Lite 3.0 and type- sudo systemctl start ssh -. Enter your password and ssh will start on Linux Lite. We will connect via ad hoc wifi the first time, so reset the firewalls on both machines as in our previous tutorial. Select and connect to the ad hoc wifi hosted network we set up in the last tutorial with your Linux Lite machine.

Go to your other Linux computer, and if XFCE click >Menu>Internet>Remmina to open it. Click on >Connection at the top left of the window and from the drop down down menu select >New. A window will open entitled Remote Desktop Preferences. In the box next to >Name type in the the netbios name of your Linux Lite 3.0 computer (the one we will be connecting to). In the box next to >Group simply type in / a forward slash. In the box next to >Protocol click open the drop down menu and locate and click on >SSH Secure Shell. In the box next to >Server type in 10.42.0.1 i/e the ad hoc wifi IP address of you Linux Lite computer. Leave the >Character set and Startup program boxes blank for now. Type your Linux Lite sudo user name in the box next to >User name. Turn on the >Password radio button. Click the >Save button in the lower left corner of the window.

Now click on your new SSH remote secure shell connection, and from the menu select >Connect. A remote desktop terminal shell will appear immediately reading at the first line >Welcome to Linux Lite 3.0 (listing after which kernel is in use by the Linux Lite system), a few lines below listing *Documentation, *Management, and *Support URLs. Next the number of available updates may be listed, and qualified as to security in the next line. The next line will usually be Last Login: with a date, and the IP address of the computer that logged in. Next will be the your Linux Lite command prompt now usable from your SSH connected other Linux machine as a secure shell remote terminal. To exit the shell type in >exit at the prompt and hit >enter. More networking power added.

Hello all -

I recently (well somewhat recently) got a laptop from the local recycling center in my town.  Why anyone would throw away a laptop like this boggles the mind.

It's a Samsung ( I don't know what model # it is) but it came with 8 gigs of ram and a Intel i7 ( I believe it's sandybridge based.)
The battery was on it's last leg so i went to ebay and got a new one.
The previous owner removed the old hard drive, which leads me too...

There's a store near me called " Microcenter" that sells computer parts, etc. I got a toshiba/ocz ssd 240 gig and put that into the laptop.
I just installed linuxlite o/s and this pc FLIES! All the hardware was detected...the FN keys for volume/brightness worked right out the of box ( or usb flash drive in my case.) Wink

As for my "linux" knowledge, I'm what you'd call " a newbie of biblical proportions." Big Grin
I look forward to reading up on linuxlite and learning from all you fine folks.
