Dear community,
I am sitting now in a beautiful public libary in Germany with beautiful and fast internet, the only problem: I cannot make updates or upgrades via apt-get or install anything. When I try to do so the bash gets stuck at:
Code: 0% [Connecting to archive.ubuntu.com (91.189.88.152)] [Connecting to repo.linux
First I thought it would be a problem of my computer dealing with Ipv4 so I tried out different things like
- creating the file /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/99force-ipv4 and writing Acquire::ForceIPv4 false;
- uncommenting in /etc/gai.conf the line 54 (precedence ::ffff:0:0/96 100)
but none seemed to work. Silly enough, when I turn my mobile phone into a mobile hotspot and connect my pc, apt-get works normally. Thats why I think the public wifi is blocking somewhat apt-get and other services or data traffic...another hint is that evolution does not work neither.
I am no professional, however I have never heard about public hotspots blocking certain services, in particular apt-get... I don't know whether there is a solution but I wanted to ask here, maybe someone nows how to get apt-get and evolution running under such circumstances. 8) Working with LaTeX, R and some other programs often requires updating or installing of special packages, so it would be quite useful for me to be able to do so in many physical environments
Thank you
Tom

| How to open old windows (Vista) VHD files in linux |

On external backup storage I have some Windows Vista backup files (vhd format). I would like to look inside these and extract anything useful ( work files etc) before deleting the vhds ( circa 400GB worth!!) and regaining some welcome storage space. The VHDs are gathering cobwebs and are no longer needed once I have taken anything of use out. I do not have (or wish to) a Windows OS machine.
Any ideas appreciated.
Thanks

| X11VNC refuses connection after LL update |

Hi,
I installed the latest LL 3.4 updates and since have not been able to connect to my X11VNC server. It was working just fine before the update.
Being a Linux newbie, other than restarting the service, rebooting and making sure that all settings that were put in place when I installed X11vnc are still there, I have no idea how to troubleshoot this problem. I was able to connect from a RealVNC and Screen Share (Mac) clients but now I get "the connection was refused by the computer" error.
Firewall is disabled in both server and clients.
Any clues to solve this problem are greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Oscar

Hi, I have a problem with editing xorg.conf.
I notice that Linux Lite always regenerate the file every-time I restart my computer so problem is how can I enable coolbits? because it always delete
Code: Option "Coolbits" "28"
every boot-up
I have tried edit the file manually and with this command Code: sudo nvidia-xconfig -a --cool-bits=31
but they don't work.

I also have a sound issue with LL 3.4. In order for me to have sound out of my netbook I have to run alsactl restore in the terminal at every boot.
I can confirm that with previous version of LL I had no issues. Is there a way to make this command run at start up so I do not have to enter it every time I restart?
Thanks
