  Slimjet asking for keyring credentials
Posted by: Lee Dunbar - 05-06-2018, 12:10 AM - Forum: Other - No Replies

No funky settings editing. Just launch Slimjet (and, reportedly, Chrome) as follows:

flashpeak-slimjet --password-store=basic

I run Slimjet, I'm using the option inside a handmade launcher in Ubuntu Mate 18.08, works slick.

I got this solution while reading about the keyring issue in a chromium forum discussion where it said option also works for Chrome, so I tried it on Slimjet, and as I said, it works for me.

Firefox options not known by me, I don't run that any more.

8) Justing mentioning it as an interesting topic of discussion. I don't think I can remember a time when Mint wasn't in the #1 slot. I supposed the times are changing.

Update Manager for Linux Lite 4.x
Posted by: ralphy - 05-04-2018, 07:15 PM - Forum: On Topic - No Replies

Hello all,

Those of us who use Update Manager in Linux Lite; version 1.0-0020 has been ported to Boinic.

Users running Linux Lite 4.0 Beta can install it as follows:

Code:
# Add UnlockMe Repo
echo "deb https://unlockforus.com/repository/dists/bionic/ /" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/unlockforus-bionic.list

# and add the PGP key:
curl -s https://unlockforus.com/repository/keyFile | sudo apt-key add -

# install mintupdate-lite
sudo apt update && sudo apt install mintupdate-lite -y

As much as I enjoy all the MS ads on a Linux forum my favorite ad so far is: the Toto Bidet seat. Too bad it couldn't be attached somehow to Windows Updates.

  Remapping keyboard actions
Posted by: alloydog - 05-04-2018, 02:34 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (1)

I have a Dell laptop running Lite 3.6.  It has a standard US keyboard, but I use the Finnish layout.  The trouble is, the US keyboard has one less key - it has a long "LEFT SHIFT" key where the Finnish layout has a short "LEFT SHIFT" and the "LESS THAN, GREATER THAN and PIPE" key.

I want to remap the "RIGHT CONTROL" key to be the  key.

I edited .Xmodmap, which resulted in the LESS THAN and GREATER THAN symbols working, but not the PIPE.  ALT GR + RIGHT CTRL just gives LESS THAN.

Here is my modified .Xmodmap:

which is now:

[tt]keycode  105 = less greater less greater bar brokenbar bar[/tt]

I have spent ages doing web searches, but cannot find why I the "PIPE" (brokenbar) doesn't work.

Any ideas?

A sad day for Linux Lite on my Asus laptop, but can it be fixed ?
Posted by: m654321 - 05-03-2018, 10:05 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (3)

Setup[1] in the signature below (a UEFI gaming laptop) is my main daily driver.  I've always had difficulty with stability with any distros (LL, Manjaro, etc) installed on it, with CMS enabled and Fast boot & Secure boot disabled in the laptop's Settings.  For these setups, I've used an MBR-ext4 formatted SSD, and LL  installed with '/' and '/home' partitions only.  No '/swap'  used as there is 16GB RAM, and the SSD works extremely fast anyway. It works well initially, then as time goes by I get booting problems (e.g. freezing).

The only way I seem to be able to run a distro smoothly on this laptop, is to use a distro that comes with UEFI support, install from the UEFI option from the installation DVD, and have CMS in Settings turned off  (=UEFI on) before and after  OS installation.  This of course rules out using LL, which saddens me somewhat, as I have been a great fan of the LL project for last 4 years.

However, I'd like to question the way I've been setting up LL in CMS mode (Legacy BIOS), as I would like to try again with LL on this laptop, and would like to invite you to comment, and tell me if I'm doing anything incorrectly ...

Could the problem be with 'managing flags', when partitioning the drive in gparted, prior to OS installation. For example, should I tick the flag for 'Legacy Bios'. I think the only flag I ever ticked, if any, was the 'boot flag' for the '/' partition. Which flags should I be ticking?

  Internet timing out
Posted by: ockies - 05-03-2018, 08:51 AM - Forum: Network - Replies (2)

:-[  Hi, I have a problem connecting to the internet with my WIFI.  For some reason my laptop will connect to the WIFI, and then drop it again, and then I cannot reconnect to the internet again.  Sometimes when I do manage to connect, the connection will time out (server taking too long to connect) and the connection will freeze.  This means that I have shut down my laptop, restart 10-15 minutes later, and hopefully it connects, but sometimes it just refuses to connect to the internet. This means that my internet connection is a very hit and miss, and sometimes I want to hit my laptop in frustration, and I won't miss!

I am running LL3.6 with the latest updates, and I have tried three different browsers (just in case Firefox is wonky) and Thunderbird, and regardless of which browser/email client, this problem crops up frequently, i.e nearly every day.  Sometimes I might be connected to the internet with no problems, and two hours later everything just freezes.

Can someone please help?

Many thanks in advance.

Two users access to common folder
Posted by: Sprintrdriver - 05-02-2018, 09:12 PM - Forum: Hard Drives and SSDs - Replies (7)

Hi forum.

I have this situation where I have two users on the computer. I have tried to read up on users and groups to understand, but is still very new to this (most of what I have done so far is by googling to find solutions, and I have not this in my fingertips so to speak).

When I installed LL, I left a partition (last half of disk space, ext4) for it self for general file store.

Now I have made a folder, say it's named "everybody", it is supposed to hold files that both users have access to. Both users should be able to edit and delete whatever file the other user have created.

First off what I have done is to create a group "commonfiles" and put user1 and user2 in that group. Then I made permission to folder "everybody" so that it had group "commonfiles" with all permission. user1 is the owner of "everybody" folder.

What I discovered next - a thing that I didn't want to happen. If I create a new sub folder logged in as user1, that folder got permission that owner/group of "user1". So when I log on as user2 and navigate into the same folder, user2 cannot edit/delete any files, unless user1 spesific say that the newly created folder should have group commonfiles instead of user1.

The question I have to make life easier: Should I just forget about having this group called "commonfiles" and instead just make user2 into group "user1"? That is - what benefits / caveats should I expect if I does that?
