  Screenshooter
Posted by: MS - 06-29-2019, 08:33 AM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (11)

Can anyone recommend me a replacement for the XFCE4-screenshooter? I need an utility, which automatically makes a screenshot of the entire display and saves it without further ado in the Pictures directory or some other indicated location. Otherwise, please give me pointers on how to configure the XFCE4-screenshooter to work in this manner. Also, where do I set the 'printscreen' button as default for the new function, in case the new function does not default itself unto?

  Network Speeds ath9k Atheros
Posted by: firenice03 - 06-27-2019, 04:49 PM - Forum: Network - Replies (8)

So I picked up an Asus E402W, not a bad lil machine, have the UEFI version of LL4.2 installed and updated.
It had a slot for a drive - so I added an SSD.. Thus far all is good, except for 1 little thing - Atheros wireless adapter..Max speed is about half of what I should get and it will fluctuate all the way down to 1 Mb/s to its max of 72 Mb/s (normal should be 114/115 Mb/s)
Hers is some output:

Code:
uname -r
4.15.0-52-generic
I have tried 4.16, 4.20 and 5.0 to see if any difference - alas no

Code:
inxi -n
Network:   Card-1: Qualcomm Atheros QCA9565 / AR9565 Wireless Network Adapter driver: ath9k
IF: wlp1s0 state: up mac: 80:c5:f2:6c:86:83
Code:
lspci -nnk -d 168c:
01:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Qualcomm Atheros QCA9565 / AR9565 Wireless Network Adapter [168c:0036] (rev 01)
    Subsystem: AzureWave QCA9565 / AR9565 Wireless Network Adapter [1a3b:218d]
    Kernel driver in use: ath9k
    Kernel modules: ath9k

I've tried a few of the usual;
-- Checked Install Drivers - Nada
-- Synaptic - nothing for the 9565
-- Bluetooth disabled (no change)
-- Tried the mod - ath9k nohwcrypt=1 (per https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2397106)

Any ideas from the census Smile  - other mods / kernels etc..

TIA Smile

  taxact online
Posted by: n49er - 06-26-2019, 08:52 PM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (1)

I need to make a decision soon about windows 7 on the laptop soon before update support ends.  The only reason I have a need for for windows these days is for doing personal taxes with an installed program.  The taxact site says it not support linux for installed programs, but it says to use the online version on a supported browser.  If anyone here has used online version on ubuntu, I'd like to know if you were successful submitting the return, and able to print to the local printer.

  User and Sudo passwords
Posted by: D_Blaze - 06-26-2019, 02:31 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (1)

When installing i was asked to create a username and password.
this same password also became the password for sudo
is there anyway to change the password for sudo so it is different to my username password? (i would prefer to keep the password for the username and have a different password for sudo)

Looking at the manual i'm thinking i could create a new 'sudo' user, give it sudo group access, then remove my user from sudo group access. This way i will have a new password for sudo that's diff from my user password. Is this the best way of accomplishing this?

Cheers
Daniel

Newbie here...Just getting started.

In the welcome letter, Jerry noted:

" If you are asking for or offering help, please remember to give people a Thanks located underneath their name on the left hand side of the page."

Is there a way to tell that I actually thanked someone via the link?

Removing virtual box - how to use the code lines properly?
Posted by: JanetBiggar - 06-25-2019, 05:56 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (5)

So I’m trying out LL 4.0 on a new (to me) old laptop and wanted to remove virtual box so as to speed up getting to the start menu faster. I used the info in the 4.0 release announcement where Jerry has listed the 5 lines.

I wasn’t sure if I was to copy and paste each line separately or do it altogether so did the first three lines all separately. After pasting the first line and hitting enter then entering my password it did “stuff”, but after each of the 2nd and 3rd lines it didn’t seem to do anything it just came back with the usual line it shows when you initially open terminal.

I then copy and pasted the last 2 lines together and pressed enter and it did “stuff” again.

So it seems maybe it gets to the start menu a bit faster, however because of the way I did it above I’m wondering if anything really has changed and what is the correct way to do the steps to remove virtual box? I suspect I will be using more 64 bit laptops and LL 4.0 so would like to know for future.
