Back-up hard drive files are locked?
Posted by: Rapidrob - 11-30-2021, 04:43 PM - Forum: Installing Software - No Replies

I downloaded the latest OS version of LL on four computers. All went well.
Now on one of my computers where I have backed up all my files on a 2ND hard drive that has to be mounted for use, every file is locked.
I have "Read/Write" permission on every file on this HDfile but cannot change to un-lock any of them. All files in " File Manager".
I am NOT Linux proficient and there are hundreds of files. Every file on this HD is locked.
Please help this old man.

Very slow data transfer to USB memory stick
Posted by: Ean - 11-27-2021, 11:31 AM - Forum: Other - Replies (6)

This is a query regarding very slow data transfer from hard drive to a USB memory stick for the last few percent of the transfer of large files. The filetypes I've tried are .ISO and .MP4 of about 80Mb or so upwards. It's possible the same happens to small files, but I don't see it. What happens is that the transfer starts and continues at a "normal" speed, then slows to a crawl towards the end. This has caused apps, such as VLC, to crash.

The PC is a 2.7GHz dual core AMD 2 x2 22, 4Gb RAM, single boot, running LL 5.6. It takes about 2min 35 secs to boot up, and according to BTOP uses around 0.7Gb RAM and a few % CPU when idling. When I look at Task Manager, these figures are broadly agreed with. The real-time (I think) CPU usage display spikes a great deal to 100% from the time I run Task Manager during the time of slow file transfer. This seems to tie up with apps crashing. I've tried different memory sticks with the same result.

I'm new to Linux and have only been using LL for about 12 days and have no programming experience whatsoever. Although I'm posting this, LL is working very well for me. Please provide a simplistic response if possible.

Ean.

Zorin OS vs Linux Lite OS

I don't like Zorin OS because it's not easy to use! I love Linux Lite OS because it's easy to use!

How to configure Grub to boot instead of Windows
Posted by: adrianhouse78 - 11-24-2021, 02:53 PM - Forum: Installing Linux Lite - Replies (5)

Hi everyone,

Very new to Linux Lite. I have a dual install of LL and Windows, and can't get LL to boot. The only way I can use Linux Lite is by booting up Windows and then going Settings > Recovery > advanced Restart > Restart from USB etc and then I select Ubuntu, and it restarts and boots Linux instead of Windows. Not what I want to be doing every time obviously!

I already posted on this and had some suggestions but no fix. I think what I need to do is configure Grub so that it boots first instead of Windows. One user told me to input sudo nano /etc/default/grub , but then I wasn't sure what to do after that.

Any help appreciated, many thanks!

Adrian

  Disappearing scrollbars
Posted by: Ean - 11-19-2021, 01:38 PM - Forum: Other - Replies (11)

Hi,

I'm new to Linux and  installed LL 5.6 on a 64 bit AMD 2 core 2.7GHz, 4Gb RAM, legacy BIOS PC on Monday. All seems good.

My apologies for asking about a problem in the previous version of this post regarding fonts, This had been plaguing me for days, but a solution has just occurred to me. My apologies for breaking any forum protocols; I'm new to this.

Is there a way to get rid of the disappearing scrollbars, please, (or a way to make them more visible) as I find them mildly confusing? I can't find a setting for this; I've also done a search for Animations.

Solutions would be most welcome. Although I'm experienced with Windows, please respond as to a beginner.

Ean.

  Brave browser
Posted by: trinidad - 11-18-2021, 06:43 PM - Forum: On Topic - Replies (4)

Those of you opting for Brave browser may want to take a look at some relatively thorough and interesting commentary from this site. If you are offended by a little vulgar language do not let it discount the facts involved. The writer is very bright and informed, though he has a bit of an abnormal fixation about censorship and is vulgar at times on purpose, so it is not worth the bother to comment on his occasional vulgarity. He does hit upon most of the reasons of my own reticence about the Brave browser. I am preparing a reply to his commentary but it will be a few days before I put it all together. Many of the digital currency pioneers and entrepreneurs are nothing short of unethical hucksters, anarchists, and profligate millionaire gangsters. There is a dark lingering history of havoc in their rise to prominence.
