We're going to add the kill gdebi and kill synaptic code to the next version of Install Additional Software. Seems this issue crops up from time to time, we'll nip it in the bud :)

Simplest way. Log out and Log back in. Then Open Synaptic and start over.
and post back if you have any problems.

How do I check that and shut them down?

Simplest way. Log out and Log back in. Then Open Synaptic and start over.

I could go into using Htop, Top, and other stuff in XFCE to shut down running processes.

But my feast is calling me

Hi Earlytv,

This error

Unable to get exclusive lock...

Just means you have more than one package manager open, like Synaptic *and* Install Additional software. Make sure only one package manager is open at a time and try again.

Hi Earlytv,

I second what Rokytnji said.

Forum member Gold_Finger has a great post about flash on older hardware. Take a look here and see if this will solve your issue.

I use 1.0.8 with firefox, which says has shockwave flash. All the sites that need flash, without it they would say need to install flash, are blank, the section of page that needs flash is blank, like in the internet speed test I use, the section that is blank is where you can start the test, so i can not start the test.
System is very old very slow asus cusi-fx. Last thing to run fast on this was windows me. I am trying to find a linux that is fast on it that works? If not then I run dual boot, win me with a small fast browser linux for the internet. Way back, cant find it, from win me dos a linux browser could be called, I guess if that worked dual boot would not be needed.
