You might need to try installing dconf-tools and/or dconf-editor to get a gui option to control global proxy settings.
Thanks for those suggestions @gold_finger, there is some very useful information there. My problem is that my particular "salt-mine" does not use a proxy server in the form "http://fqdn:port", but an auto configuration script in the form "http://fqdn/filename". This ensures that a viable proxy server is always selected regardless of any nefarious network activities that may be going on.I guess I'll have to try some of the GUI tools suggested to see if they support that.
