[ SOLVED ] No video when playing mp4 movie in vlc

I sometimes find VLC won't play MP4 video after the application has received an update. I have no idea why but whilst playing around with settings did not solve the problem, resetting VLC to 'Preference defaults' from the preferences window did.
Give it a try, it works for me, it may work for you ...... but no guarantees

Like vno and OP I had the same problem on a few machines.
Changing the video output settings in VLC helped most of the time, had the most trouble on older hardware (Intel graphics).
The problem happened on anything in VLC, including DVD playback.
I think video drivers codec compatibility could be related. I had small videos, but higher resolutions videos could drop after the x seconds buffer on slower hardware.

Maybe some Ux veterans could suggest another video player?

And this setting (from the link):
Remove the tick for Accelerated video output (Overlay)
+
Change Output to X11 Video output

Solved it.

(now I'm wondering what is this X11 video output...?).

I put both movies i made on the tablet and it played them without any problems. Guess the laptop is missing some power to play them. I even tried a 1080p movie i shot with phone and that also didnt play. So going to use the tablet for playing the movies from phone.

I got this:

VLC's messages feature might also help track the issue, start your troublesome file playing in VLC then click the Stop button.
Then click Tools > Messages to bring up the message window.
Change the Verbosity setting in the message window to Debug, then click Play.
There might be something in the message output that tells why it's failing, if it's going blank after only a fraction of a second just click stop again once it's gone blank & have a look at the output from the messages for clues.

You could always download the video's to your pc, then transcode them to another format yet retain the quality  using Handbrake

No use trying on a Windows tablet or any other device. As I said, it needs to be tested on a more powerful computer running LL 3.0  Cheers

sorry but this laptop is the most powerfull device i have that is running LL 3.0

A few more packages to try: x264 libx264-dev

Same result as before, video loads for about half a second and then only sound

I will see if it runs on my tablet. But thats running windows 10.
Just started loading the tablet, power was below 10% and then it won't start. Will check if the videos run once its above 10% power.

I wonder if its the machine you're trying to play the file on. Have you got a more powerful computer that you can test the files on (with the above packages installed) ? Since you said the video does show for a moment.
